Beach hunting can definitely be a daunting task. One beach could be great one day then horrible the next when the waves are like this. Those brown coins are definitely a good sign though! I live up the coast a few hours and I'm hoping for more big waves in the near future. Got lucky today and pulled two gold rings as my first good finds of the year, but i know the sand is quickly moving back in so i doubt I'll find anymore anytime soon. Good luck hunting! -a fellow trash panda

@@TrashPandaMetalDetecting ahh that's close, although in socal thats like still an hour of traffic LOL! But nah seriously, I dont know how the beaches work in the winter down there as I spend a lot of time on my beaches up here. But I do know that during the summer, the socal beaches are more likely to wash out when we get big swells from the south, and especially when we get a tropical storm that makes it's way up to us. That's usually when you see the big cuts in the sand down there. I'm sure it happens in the winter months when we get big waves from the north as well, but at that point it's just a lot of exploring the beaches around you when the waves are up and the tides are low. Some beaches are more keen to washing out than others. My method when exploring a beach and trying to figure out if it's good is this: go out on the wet sand, preferably as the tide is going out to low tide, and do zig zags going towards the water and away from the water. Keep them a bit open at first. Then when you find something, determine if it's a heavier object. If its aluminum or a crusty zinc penny or a pulltab then keep moving to the next target. If it's a nickel or a quarter or a fishing weight, then begin to search the area around it to see if theres more heavier objects near it. What you're trying to do is find a good patch of heavier objects. If you find a patch, grid it and hunt it hard until theres no more then move on to searching for the next patch. You'll know a beach is bad if you only find aluminum. Hope this helps!

When I was a kid they brought railroad police into the school and told us the coins would shoot out like a bullet when the trains ran over them. Obviously that doesn't happen since you're finding the coins a couple feet off the tracks.

@@boogerhooks Bullets might be a stretch, but they can shoot out. I know from personal experience in my childhood. We resulted to duct taping them to the tracks with several layers of tape.
