I was a pharmacy tech in college and gained pharmacist mentors through that experience! They helped me get into pharmacy school. Then, during pharmacy school, I gained more mentors through upperclassmen and other pharmacists I worked with as an intern

Hi Sarah! I wanted to know if you could give an example of the math you use to determine the dosage for medication or the math in general used as a pharmacist. I love your dedication to the field! Keep up the good work!
@SarahPharmD7 күн бұрын
Hi! There’s a lot of different types of math, some are very simple such as weight based medications 10mg/kg and patient weights 50kg so you just simply multiply. Some medications need to be adjusted if their renal or hepatic function is poor so you would need to plug in the equations to see where the patient is at (such as CrCL equation to see kidney function). There are other medications that are much more complicated such as vancomycin where you need to use a graphing calculator to plug in more complex equations (if you look up vancomycin you can see how complicated it can be)

Insightful information, Sarah. I’m an infectious disease hospital pharmacist/residency preceptor with 20+ years experience and everything you mentioned in this video is 100% spot on. Work experience during pharmacy school and letter of recommendation writers that highly recommend a residency candidate are pluses in getting a PGY-1 residency.

pharmacy school is difficult, I will not lie about that! I couldn't have done it alone. You can befriend some classmates and try to go through the material together - information retains better when you teach others! You can also get advice from upperclassmen about study/exam tips as well.

Hi Sarah, I love your videos! Can you give us tips to get through pharmacy school? Is it really hard ? What if I’m not very good at chemistry ?
@SarahPharmD13 күн бұрын
Hi! Aww thank you for watching my videos! Pharmacy school is tough, but you’ll get through it with a strong support system. A good tip I like to give people starting pharmacy school is apply for mentorship programs so that you can get paired up with an upperclassmen or even alumni so that you have some support/guidance in your journey! It is okay if you’re not the best at chemistry, pharmacy school will further strengthen your knowledge. I would say math is more important than chemistry when it comes to real life practice!

I don’t know if I remembered asking this question before. If I did, sorry for being repetitive 😅 But could a biomedical engineer work well together with a hospital pharmacist on critical thinking skills by using research to find out which medication works best for the patient to take in order to feel better? I still want to work at the hospital as a biomedical engineer in the future on discovering medication
@SarahPharmD13 күн бұрын
I am not sure if biomedical engineers work in the hospital! I mainly work alongside doctors and nurses in my years of experience. However critical skills such as being able to do research and find answers should apply to both professions!

Hello! I’m an eighth grader and we try to figure out which career we want. I’ve heard vague things about education for pharmacists- would a student obtain a bachelor’s degree first and then attend pharmacy school? Or an undergraduate and then pharmacy school? My main questions are- -What do you think is a good approach towards college for a student looking to be a pharmacist -How does a person get involved in activities that expose them to medicine so they know if they’re interested or can just gain experience? -Is it worth it to put all this time and effort towards this career? Especially considering the work hours, pay, and years dedicated to college and pharmacy school. -What are the best places to study for being a pharmacist? -What are the best places to live that offer job opportunities as a pharmacist? -What are the best places to intern or volunteer as preparation for being a pharmacist? -What helps to get a job opportunity as a pharmacist? If there’s any key points you want to mention i’d appreciate that too- sorry for the lengthy comment 😅
@SarahPharmD25 күн бұрын
Hi!! Usually you would need a bachelors degree (undergraduate/college) first before you go to pharmacy school. There are some colleges that combine both and provide accelerated programs but I would be cautious of those if you’re not 100% sure you want to do pharmacy since you won’t have a bachelors to fall back on! In regards to your questions, I have a video that breaks down my path from high school to becoming a pharmacist. I think that one will answer almost all your questions about how to get experience and the overall pathway!

4th year PharmD... I'm not part of any organization & haven't really networked. But I know retail is officially dead now. Ambulatory, clinical, hospital or whatever is looking like the option. What advice can you give me for getting my foot in the door. I was on Indeed & like idk what happened from the end the summer to now there's legit 0 listings for retail. It's all patient care based jobs looking for pharmacists with clinical/hospital experience. There's quite a few oncology listings also. I'm panicking. I need to start making moves. Please some advice. It's not that I wanted to go into retail to begin with, but by the time I graduate I'm going to be broke (which already I am) & some quick cash isn't looking like an option by working retail until I figure out my next move. Please help me.
@SarahPharmDАй бұрын
I recommend applying for residency so that you can get clinical experience and get your foot in the door. Most programs will hire on if there are jobs available and if they like you or they can put in a good word for you regarding clinical jobs (many managers/residency directors know each other). Even if you didn't apply for residency this round, you can always apply the following year. My coresident worked retail for a few years before he applied for residency, then after residency he was able to pivot to an ambulatory care job. - Oncology is definitely a growing field with more job postings! However, most of them will require PGY2s or experience in oncology - did you have any APPEs with oncology? If so that would help! - If possible, you can broaden your search if you're willing to move. There are clinical positions in non-ideal areas/cities - you can gain experience for a few years and then switch back your area of preference once a job opens up. I had a friend move to a more rural area for an ambulatory care position under a huge hospital chain and then transferred within the system to a better location once he saw positions open up (they tend to hire people within the system before prioritizing outside applicants). I hope this helps!
