I like folders for practicality. I prefer fixed blades for their durability and self defense applications.

What would you recomend for batoning wood for beginners? My understanding is that Mora Companion can be used for batoning as long as the wood is not thicker than your wrist? Any tips? Thank you I am very new to knives. Today is my first day of searching for info on them :)

Interesting that the bear was not accustomed to people yet he was coming up to your camp. I would have thought the opposite. Hmm...now I think I will worry more about bears when canoeing in bear country :) Did you say that you have some videos as to how you would protect yourself when attacked by wild animals? Can you post the links? Thank you

there's play in your knife because you swapped out the pegs. switch them, they may look similar but they are different.

The first knives they produced, in the late 1950s, were handed to hunters, fishermen and trappers to evaluate and modified at their inputs. So, it’s no real surprise that non hunters etc. find them to be good, decent knives, just not used much.

A finger guard would ruin what the knife is intended for. Mora sells a Classic model with a finger guard if that's what you want. Or you could buy a self defense knife that has a finger guard.

RMJ Shrike I think it is equal in terms of fighting, but not in looks. I like both brands of hawks. But the Wrinkler Rescue Axe lives in my car. That should give you an idea of which I prefer.

Those SOG hawks throw well. I’m a huge RMJ and Winkler hawks fan. Another, more traditional hawk I like is the 2hawks Woodsman. Love my RMJ Jenny Wren, Dvalinn, Little Bird, and 2hawks Woodsman.

My newest revelation about tomahawks is in camp , it's a great spatula on the griddle 😃 yeh , always by my side even when distracted by food , spiking hot dogs , flipping burgers, eggs , haven't tried pancakes 🥞 yet , but im thinking about it. Never carrying a spatula camping again!

Frankly the entire thing is subjective based on your personal feelings and there is a lot of "thisnis better PERIOD" vs "this is better for ME". Basically 40 minutes of confirmation bias.

Everyone wants to scream "knife abuse!" but in the modern world there is simply no use anymore for fixed blades other than hard use like batonning (and also as a weapon that can be smoothly drawn under combat conditions without the possibility of deployment failure). Folding knives today are reliable and ergonomic enough to do almost everything else. A fixed blade should be tough enough to split wood, unless it's intended to just be a historical replica or something.

CTS-XHP rocks! As a custom knife maker, it's a favorite of mine! My Recon 1 is in S35VN and is a very bad boy. Is it a friendly camp knife for slicing onions and potatoes? No, it isn't...Can I build a shelter post haste, while a storm is brewing and a fire as well? Yes it will, every time, in a bad spot I can count on this knife.

I enjoyed this video. It got my subscription. 👍🏼 Two knives that I edc (one or the other) are the TOPS Brakimo and the TOPS Prather War Bowie. I have a “modified scout carry”. Behind the back, inside the waistband, at a 30 degree angle. Only thing showing is the handle and a little bit of the sheath. Very comfortable with a big knife like the War Bowie. Sitting in a car is no problem. Easy to deploy. No patterning with a loose shirt untucked. 👍🏼👍🏼

As someone relatively new to knives but very interested, in more ofna tactical instance, why not put a hollow edge, would i mske it bad at stabbing? Bc lethally, laceration is still good for stuff like fhe jugular?

I've had one of these (with the leather sheath) for a couple of years. I haven't used it much, as it is really built for serious heavy-duty use. It's an incredibly stout knife - the thickness of the blade relative to the size of the knife has to he seen and felt to be appreciated. It's beefy as hell. If you wanted something beefier to break down tree limbs or firewood with, you'd have to upgrade to a heavy oversized combat knife or a carbon-steel axe.

I think you may be confusing Taiwan with China… The strength and political power of Taiwan’s manufacturing capability in LITERALLY what keeps China from invading them and starting a true WW3 (no free Taiwan = no global supply of electronic chips for cell phones, computers, vehicles, etc) Taiwan is a free, capitalist country and has some of the best manufacturing standards in the world and the quality control of Cold Steel’s Taiwan products have always been second-to-none compared to knife brands in their relative price range. HOWEVER, since cold steel has been under new ownership there are rumours that the quality control has shit the bed a little bit, so you could be experiencing a genuine manufacturing defect. My guess though, is that like most Recon 1s and Tri-Ad Lock knives-it’s just really stiff at first and you need to use it for a week or two to break it in. You may have to really drive your thumb into the lock mechanism to disengage it at first, but that might be all that’s going on. Best of luck and I hope it ends up being a great knife for you in the end.

I have used full length and partial length stick tang knives as well as folding knives almost my entire life (~64 years of use) and never had one break on me. Knives cut & slice. Axes chop. Crowbars pry. If one does not use the tool the way it was intended, the user not the tool failed. Having said that I have used a Mora Kansbol and a Mora Classic 2 to baton wood occasionally and they are still in good condition

Very good intro, if you want a top knife you have to wistand having not knife lovers stare at you like a maniac, i'll take it, the recon 1 tanto in my book is the best EDC folder ever made to this day, everything about it is perfect i would just have the serated version for my self because it tends to cut into ropes and shit like that a little bit better but again everything about it is perfect for an edc, the carriability, the steel, the shape factor is the best, the price range is the best, how robust it is you can do everything with this knife from eating to killing to hunting to really anything that crosses your mind that you can do with a knife, but again it's a knife it's not a riffle, it's not an axe, it's a goddamn knife, and as far as knives go it's the just the top of the fucking best. Now of course for my part i live in France carrying knife here is illegal i do it anyway i don't give a fck about salve progressists and comies laws, so you gotta be careful when you use this shit in public for sure, it just makes you use it as you should use it anyway and that is by being sneaky about it, no one needs to know what you are carrying, use it only when you really need it don't boast about it, if someone says something answer politely and don't make a big thing out of it that's pretty much it.

I would use shorter cord. Your required pull length seems too long for cqc to me and my comfort. I don’t want my arm halfway extended in front of my body while an attacker may have drawn a weapon.
