This was a great video dude. I'm going through something similar. I started making music 5 years ago, and as my love grew, I wanted to make it into a career. In the process of trying to make that happen, I get so absorbed in what people love, what they hate; slowly letting that work its way into my writing. Every note I feel scared that it's not enough for the people that I think I'm writing it for. It's so insanely shallow. To create something in this world dedicated to people that I don't know. I just want to write, no fear of external judgment. Anybody can tailor something for someone else, but the personality of the one creating it will then mean nothing. Your point about creating for a higher power is beautiful. In my view, it's creating art for someone who will never provide praise or negative feedback. It is just is, and they have it. You made tangible evidence of your vision, and that's enough because every person is so mf special.

Keep it up - and yes, the 645 lenses were designed for a film size / images larger than the 44x33mm GFX sensor size, so no vignette as you said. I think they will be going up and up in price as GFX (and perhaps other similar systems) become more popular..

The lens is incredibly sharp wide open if you can nail the focus. I use it on a 5D mkll with a split screen and usually I can be quite accurate, but I guess medium format can make nailing focus even more difficult, especially if you are not shooting from a tripod.

I was wandering GFX or FF camera. At the end, when I looked to the size and weight of the combo body / lenses, I came back to a Leica M camera : M + 50 F/1.4 = the weight of GFX body alone. A camera has to be light for me. Otherwise it stays on a shelf. And the best gear doesn't make good pictures on a shelf.

Hey man. Dunno if I am reading too much into this - if I do, I am sorry about this long ass comment - but I feel you are somewhat frustated with the direction you are going in and being on the edge of photo-fatigue. I know the feeling. If I can give any sort of advice, buy (or borrow from the library) some photography books. Like monographs from established photographers that went to art school, that went to documentary school, that worked at newspapers. Try stuff from different countries. Look up Alec Soth, sure, but also Sally Mann and Moyra Davey and Lars Tunbjørk and Daido Moriyama and JH Engstrøm. Or what about Pieter Hugo or Jamie Hawkesworth or someone else? In there, you will get inspired to do beautiful work that's not about "what cinebloom filter to buy next" or film grain and more about setting up a project and investigating some grander theme. ... or you know, get some inspiration from movies or the art museum, go watch some oil painters do their shit. This KZbin circlejerking of meta-photographing will wear you out. Hope this mess of a comment can be some sort of help :)

@@joshshanksphoto You are welcome! Best of luck out there. Also, another thought to keep in mind. Picasso was probably very picky about his gear, but he sure as hell wouldn't be talking about brushes all day. And when I read a book, I don't care if it was written on a typewriter or a macbook.

That last part really hits. Eyes alone don't bring any light into the world, they just hold on to it for a moment A camera is a box to hold secrets but it is also a projector to showcase life (extreme side note but they actually do have older cameras with projectors on them, which is why I thought that last segment was even more interesting) I'm also Filipino American and have not been there for more than a decade. My grandparents that live there have both since passed, one during the covid lockdowns and one shortly after when the lockdowns were lifted, and I have real anxieties about going back, much the same to what you felt before arriving there. The house I grew up in is gone, and a new building is standing there now. The farmland that surrounded us was turned into city. And my grandparents that watched over me all that time are no longer there either. It's so different now. Like an alien world, so far removed from what few memories I have; and I'm scared that my family will look at me and not like what they see. I'm the only son of my father and the only natural born boy who will carry their last name in the whole family. The thought of going back weighs on me heavily and for now it's honestly easier to not think about it. The part where you really railed the GFX50R also kind of tickled me because of my friends that are interested in photography they could not fathom why I would spend so much money on a camera that is so bad on paper. Some are Sony shooters, Canon diehards and the one Nikon guy and they didn't even understand what I meant when I said that there was a shutter delay and the sensor readout is really slow. There are so few redeeming qualities to this camera but the images it produces for me makes up for all it's faults. I'm glad you're still uploading. It's cool to see someone around my age that is interested in what is more my style of photography; more documentary and not so focused on what's going to pull the algorithm.

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for your work in making this film sim! I know there's a rather small market for shooting the GFX for the unedited jpegs but I'm one of those guys. This portra sim came out of the camera so close to what I wanted that I couldn't imagine going through the trouble to edit it, which is exactly what I've been looking for in a camera. The colors land overall kind of flat because of the classic chrome implementation but it puts such a big emphasis on lighting because of that. I just really wanted to say thanks beacause I shot basically the whole trip with this film sim. I tried to emulate it on the XT5 just to see what I would be missing as far as the autofocus capabilities (I use adapted full frame lenses on the GFX). While I did like the output of the XT5 I ended up not liking the shooting experience (that camera is SO good though, and I can highly recommend it if I did not love so much more shooting on my GFX). Morning, midday, sunset, at night; even on rainy days there were very few moments when I was not happy with the result, like the lighting just had to be straight awful for this sim to not work. I'm not sure if you even still use film sims for anything but if you do ever make a kodak gold recipe for this sensor I will 100% be loading that up with me wherever my next adventure is. Thanks so much! instagram.com/pooberlicious/ If you want to check out some of the pictures I've taken.

Thanks for your genuine feedback, I appreciate all that info. Yeah I do agree there many sims that can save or look good in unsavory lighting, maybe something high in contrast or something less clean and clinical in aesthetic. But yeah I have definitely been thinking about doing a gold sim, honestly when I have tried it ends up being so close to the portra sim just changes in the shadows and color that I don't even make it a separate sim I just edit in the quick menu off the portra sim. You've given me the idea to take a second look at doing a gold simulation though!

Josh...I agree with so many of your points. After college in 1989 I did back pack around the world in 18 months. Totally life-changing experience but in a sober and realistic way and not the way so many YTubers go on about. There was nothing romantic about waiting 7 hrs in Nepal for a train that was supposed to arrive 8hrs prior. No Zen in that. I also agree that you don't have to travel to these far off places when beauty exists right here in America. Over the years I have acquired and used many cameras and the Canon EOS 100 was a film camera that I bought in London and shot over 7000 images. It was costly to develop so I did it at a trickle. At any rate, some of my favorite images were taken as you were trying to explain...controlling the scene and serendipity but heavily leaning towards spontaneous. A fellow traveler gave me good advice on this matter. He said...allow yourself to see as if you were sitting on a park bench in the middle of a city park and watch life go by and if something of interest passes by then capture an image of it. You will have it for ever. That is why I love photography so much. Because no one will ever see the same image the same. Keep taking photos and it is normal to be self-critical. In fact, its important.
