Our Community Concert Band played this piece and I was lucky enough to be one of the 1st Trombones. What a cool set of notes in the harmony. This is just one of those super special pieces that I’m so grateful to have played on. West Jordan Community Concert Band ‘24!!! :)

played this piece my sophomore year of high school and everyone was in tears (including my director who doesn’t show emotions) our directors words before giving us the piece were “think of people you love, play it emotionally, don’t think about the technical stuff that makes it so stuck in one spot, keep it moving, and most of all just feel the music” it was the most beautiful thing we played that year, we played and there was not a dry eye in the room at all

The identification of timbre and interplay i.e. that lone piano pitch makes me think of Druckman, the constant percussion really inspired me anf made me realize how necessary percussion need to be in today's music. On second hearing the wind music blew my mind, does the bass clarinet ever stop?Trumprts against trombones so inventive.

Inventive, exciting,Intelligent. So happy to hear CindyMctee ! She studied wJacobDruckman and Penderecky and ?McCombie. She uses repetition motifs here it almost sounds minimalist(which every American who grows up with popmusic understands)outstanding percussion, winds, brass ensembles parts. Married to Slatkin and her performed widely! Glad I was able to find this will find her other scores.

Added Flash: Have the Brass stand up on the Precussion break at 7:24 and lift their bells! The rest of the Woodwinds stand at 7:54 ! It's a guaranteed standing ovation from the audience! I have done this conducting my bands, and it is now my trademark! ~ Paul Grustans

Excellent performance, which military bands excel at. The trombones and low brass just before the midpoint are incredible in their soft rendition of the main theme. I must have played this piece at least three or four times in my high school and college years from 1966 to 1976.

I have been out of high-school for 13 years. We played this song for our symphonic band season, I still come back to listen to it even now. I played French horn, and the absolution of the horn melody was like no other. Hands down the most evocative song of my band years.
