Good Video, Thanks! I just ordered mine, not sure why you say the V60 has same price, on web site the starting price for V60 is around 10K more than the XC40 so I would not suggest to compare like for like on the assumption they have the same cost; this is the smallest and cheapest one in Volvo I believe, and still a very good car. V60 is not a SUV either so the driving and seat are different on the 2 models. If you are tall I guess XC40 can be less comfortable, but for me there is plenty of room.

Been thinking of what to buy to get the kids to school and I think I have finally settled on one of these and your review probably tipped the scales. I hope you didnt ever get a Range Rover as I am sure you dodged a bullet by choosing a Mercedes. I have owned a couple and they are so luxurious and comfortable but when they go wrong the costs can be catastrophic. You were correct about not being able to get three child seats in the back.

Ive owned 2 of these in past 6 years and these are the things id consider when buying this car Things that are a must in my opinion Heated seats Harmon kardon sound system Electric seats Electric mirrors Pro nav M sport+ braking system (the one that supports the 19 inch alloys) Adaptive suspension (rare but a must in my opinion) Get a 65 plate or higher as it comes with the newer led lights that look way better than the older in my opinion or newer Adaptive led lights are even better. If want vented and groved performance brake disks just know they have significantly more wind noise to them due to the holes in the discs compared to the standard disks without the holes but eventually you get used to it. Removing the dpf and egr is a must in this car doing that will give you so much more reliability in the long term however you need to go to a place that know what they are doing. You will also need to get it tuned after the removal. Costs around £350-£500 for removal and tune usually Id also consider when getting this car to get 4 brand new tyres all the same brand and and getting the tracking done by a specialist that does 4 wheel drive cars. Will help with mpg also the feel of the car and less wear on other car parts. Id reccomend a gearbox service on this car also if your milage is above 60k as it will make your gearchanges super smooth and it will eliminate the jerk you get in these cars when you come to a stop. Lastly id change the oil and oil filter along with the air filter every 5k instead of 10k might cost alittle more however its not too hard to do yourself if you have the time and space. My current 335d is on 160k milage and still going strong

Depending on your needs, I would also like to add active cruise control to the list, if you have to daily drive the car through heavy traffic, it makes it a breeze and changes your life, but it is a rare option from what I have seen. I personally have a 430d and been lucky to have everything mentioned except adaptive suspension, but has a sunroof which was another one of the things I was looking for. For me, its the perfect mix of a comfortable car and fun car that is able to kick its rear out if wanted to.

Looking to swap my Cupra 4drive petrol estate (300bhp), I test drove an F30 335d XDrive (310bhp) which, on paper, was just as fast but more economical. However, in reality I was underwhelmed by it's performance. Standalone it was a cracking car, but regardless of the quoted figures, it didn't feel as fast off the line, so I didn't make the move. Later, I looked at a Volvo V60 D6 AWD Plug-In Hybrid (285bhp) which was supposedly only 1 second slower to 60 with a ridiculous claimed 150mpg, but again I was unbelievably disappointed - it felt like an 8 second car, not a 5.8 second car, and real world mpg is reportedly 50-70mpg if driven extra carefully, barely better than the BMW. I sold the Cupra in the end while the market was still high, and moved away from a performance car, but now the itch has returned and I'm again looking at an F31 335d XDrive estate with a view of mapping it to 400bhp. I briefly considered a Jaguar iPace, but given the stories about fires and stuck throttles, you won't ever see me in a fully electric car, so the BMW appears to be the best option all round for decent enough economy, and power to overtake when you need it.

I watched this video for the first time a few months ago when I was looking for a S212 and your honest appraisal of the car went a long way to confirming my decision to buy one. A couple of weeks ago I took delivery of an early 2016 E220 Bluetec estate and love it to death. Although I don't have the child seat issue that you've got (my kids all have kids of their own) I needed an estate so that I could fit my wife's mobility scooter in the boot and the cavern that is the load space in the estate is ideal. I'm nearly 70 so this will probably be my last car as I plan to keep it for as long as I can continue to drive. Like you my previous car was a C-Class, which had over 280,000 miles on the clock when I traded it for the E-Class, and the difference is very notable. Got one of these on a 67 reg, now on a private plate. In Mineral Grey colour. Quite a basic spec but I plan to add things to it. I've already upgraded the business nav non-touch 6.5 inch screen to 8.8 inch touch screen (OEM part from BMW not an android screen) and added fullscreen CarPlay. Mine only has the manual seats, no reverse camera, no adaptive cruise control, no heated steering wheel or heated seats but I plan to retrofit heated seats once I've sorted other things out. It does have standard cruise control and parking sensors of course. I have absolute babied the car since I got it and it's had a full service, major service and 3 oil changes in the 30,000 miles or 15 months I've owned it. In the next week it's going for another oil service and the following week a walnut blast, replacement glow plugs are on order as the previous owner was a right cheapskate and hardly maintained it at all (they had fitted tyres without TPMS sensors on runflat tyres - which is actually a legal requirement. I had these sensors bought and added at my cost, they hadn't bothered to take it for it's EGR outstanding recall either).

Need to get mine de-coked with a walnut blast as it's now covered 92,200 miles and to my knowledge it's never had one. (I've had it for 16 months and since the 59,000 mile mark). I keep toying with the idea of replacing it with an electric car, something like a Polestar 2 or a Tesla, the lease would only cost perhaps £100-£200 more than the monthly car payment anyway but I'd save hundreds each month on fuel.... but I full well know if I replaced it with an electric car I'd regret it. @@thereallotharmatthae

Sorry I haven’t got any experience of the 6 cylinders, but I would bet that economy is actually similar to our 220d, from a servicing perspective they will take a bit more oil but labour and other parts should be similar so probably not much more (the fuel filters are almost £100 on ours as it’s a merc part, can’t imagine it’s different on the 350). As a daily driver, you absolutely cannot beat these cars! I recently let go of my 2015 E220 CDi Night Edition (W212), had it 3 years and covered 40k miles - apart from the similar hiccup of the dreaded nox sensor it was a beautiful drive. Comfortable, efficient and I believe the best looking E Class they made! I've since upgraded to a 2018 S213 E220d (a must due to work and the age of the 212 creeping up), I started off being extremely stubborn. It was too much technology for me and I just wanted my W212 back haha. I've covered around 13k miles in her now and I must say I love it. Being an SE model, I expected the comfort to be better (it definitely was). But, what I didn't expect was the sheer improvement in economy. I return around 800 miles... to ONE tank, absolutely insane and trumps the 212 at 550 (max).
@thatcarnutsguy Жыл бұрын
I’ve been slightly disappointed with the economy of ours but it’s not really an issue for the miles it does, just thought it would be better. I do like the newer model in some ways, I’m just thinking the 212 era might have been a peak on quality for Mercedes before they had to put the money into tech. Would quite like a well optioned 213 se or even the all terrain, but there’s now a significant premium on what we paid, the 212 was a bargain!

Its been all around the country and never missed a beat. had a few minor issues with it, nothing serious. Apart from that mainly servicing and wear and tear items. Find a good specialist and they cost no more to run than any other car. I do consider changing it, but might just keep this till it eventually dies lol. Next journey is a 3 week tour of Ireland at the end of July. Touch wood there are no issues. :) Also, keep an eye on your rear subframe. They are a bit noisy from outside but unlike my previous c class with the same engine, the E class does an excellent job of stoping any sound and vibration coming into the cabin at idle. On the move it’s fine too although not exactly an entertaining tone. I find it extremely relaxing and refined to spend time in. They have really spent money on sound deadening and engine mounts, which I believe might be some kind of either active or hydraulic type. There must be something clever going on because even when the c class was box fresh you felt the vibration in the seat and it was much noisier. The E class is totally different.

@project182r3 Жыл бұрын
I’ve had a few of the 335d’s in the E and F series, I eventually settled with a 2016 F31. I had mine Hartge tuned by Birds BMW to 374bhp (at the wheel) when it was 9 months old and it’s never missed a beat, I also put £2.5k down on Bilstein suspension to lower it as the X Drives sit hideously high on standard suspension and the ride is too floaty to hammer properly, rarely have I ever been beaten by anything. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned. My advice to anyone in the second hand market look for an F series 335d - don’t even look at one that doesn’t have a full BMW service history, the service intervals are too long as standard and if the maintenance isn’t 100% on point it will get expensive real quick. My second tip would be about spec, because the base price was so high many are under spec’d, the base models look pants and don’t feel particularly refined. Also consider the both diff’s want servicing at 50k, the transfer box and the gearbox wants doing 60-70k and the cam chain needs doing at 100k which is about £2k as the chain is at the back of the engine near the bulkhead and the gearbox has to come off again and be serviced.
@thatcarnutsguy Жыл бұрын
Sounds like good advice. I’ve been considering a suspension change as it has got worse with age I think, it never was great. I know birds have now developed their own suspension set up which sounds well rated. There are various cheaper options such as a spring change which doesn’t seem like it would fix the issue but apparently stock shocks are ok, with the age of mine it makes more sense to change both. It bothers me that bmw service schedules don’t touch the gearbox but will shortly get mine done elsewhere as the main dealer won’t do it. Didn’t think about diffs but makes sense if they are serviceable, I think they’ve got a bit noisier over time. I’ve always reached the service mileage in under a year and felt that was ok based on motorway miles but the last one was getting over a year due to lack of use and it felt wrong to me, just didn’t seem as smooth, maybe it was all in my head but mechanical sympathy dictated that I got it done early.
