Lemme explain what happened So he turned on the stove to heat the oil up, before he set up the ingredients. and that oil was smoking when he was done covering up the fish with batter. When oil smokes, that's a warning sign that a fire is about to happen, or fire is about to start. Now let me tell you why when he lift the lid, It combusted into flames. Fire needs Oxygen, Fuel, and Heat to Exist, There was already fuel and heat, Which is the stovetop burners, and the oil(which is the fuel). When he lift up the lid, he completed the fire triangle. The fire started, because he let the oxygen in into the about to combust oil. The next time you see a cooking oil fire on the stove, don't do what this guy did, cover up the fire with something nonflammable.

if you have oil related fires its nice to have baking soda since it serves as extinguisher.

Really good reaction but I recommend to put the lid back to the pot as well. if I were you, I will rush to get the fire extinguisher straight away to avoid touching the fire because the priority is safety. What’s the alarm that went off, is it the smoke alarm or the heat alarm.
