The Reality of Rock Fishing for Pelagics

Took me ages and many fishing sessions before I landed a fish of a lifetime, spent a lot of time spinning for tailor and the like and in the summer would spin up heaps of bonito and mack tuna, then one Monday I took my game reel out as normal with my spinning gear, it was May and there was barely any chance of any warm water being around but I put a live slimey mackerel out under a balloon and caught a 23kg Northern Bluefin tuna by myself, it was the most hectic day ever, I still can't believe I landed that huge beast by myself, that wasn't the hardest part though, carrying it back home was. We ate tuna steaks for weeks and so did our frends and neighbours.

I just realised where you were fishing mate! The big thing about that area pelagic-wise is that it's extremely dependent on warm currents pushing in from out wide. Keep an eye on the SST charts and if the boats/kayaks out on the reefs are having good sessions on the mackerel, cobes tuna and marlin then there'll probably be bait hanging around the rocks close in too with the predators to follow. Most pelagics move around a lot so if they're not there when you are, there's not much that you can do about it! Apart from that, plenty of long casts and it will happen I reckon!

Variety is the spice of life mate, mix it up to keep yourself fresh and motivated, then attack your pelagic challenge when the conditions and timing are right. I try to film a mixture of different styles of fishing both because I enjoy it, and also because I think the viewers like the variety too.

Enjoy the videos mate, I can heavily relate haha always find after a few donuts of chasing Jew off the beach I need to have a session catching flatties or something I'm more confident in to renew the fishing mojo/confidence.
