Hi Kim! A belated Shavuah Tov! I am an American who is very Zionist and passionate about it, but not right-wing and not left-wing (in the center / centrist/moderate, and I love diversity where Jews of various kinds (religious and not, Ashkenazi and Mizrahi, Sephardi, Ethiopian, etc., and olim from many different countries and different language backgrounds) live together in the same city. I deeply appreciate the range of differences amongst Am Israel. and tolerance of our wide range of backgrounds and orientations. I watched your above KZbin video about Karmiel. Can you tell me what percentage of the total population of Karmiel is dati/frum/observant of any/all kinds? And what percentage is dati leumi 'versus' haredi, etc.? What percentage of the total Karmiel population is hiluni/secular? And what percentage is maybe in between / "traditional" but not actually really observant? What percentage of the city's total population is Ashkenazi, Mizrahi, Sephardi, Ethiopian, etc.? And what percentage of the city's total population are olim? And (finally -- I promise! 🙂), what percentage (more or less) of olim are from which countries (not just Anglo)? Sorry for all the questions! But I really, truly want to know the actual breakdown! Thank you so much, Kim. Thank you again, and I can't wait to hear your answers and to know more about Karmiel! Marcus

having lived here in Nahariyya almost 9 years, Nahariyya is very difficult if, you don't get involved with the anglo community and you are older. One thing people don't know is, with the language barrier, most people over 50, Israelis anyway have grown kids, grandkids and still work long weeks and long days and are not so welcoming, not because they aren't nice, its just their lives are so busy they have little time to invite new olim and break their teeth with trying to understand your Hebrew. We wanted Israeli, we already lived in America in a great community in Cleveland and didn't think we needed an anglo community, we wanted to be Israeli. Big huge, massive mistake. If you have kids, they will help you to assimalate, but if you don't, you most likely won't. Working over 50 in the North is almost impossible, agism is real and brutal. That isn't just an opinion its fact, Israeli's are very up front and will tell you to your face, you are too old. So, prepare for that as best you can because if you are over 50 and must work, you may very well never work again unless you have something prearranged from America. Nahariyya is beautiful, we love the Ga'aton, the beach but its not easy unless you are older and come with a lot of money. We didn't and it was, well not easy to say the least. Get involved with the angol community from the beginning, they will help guide you.

As for jobs. In 12 years I found only one job and all where I was turned away was 100% due to my age of over 50. That isn't paranoia its fact, Israeli's are very upfront and told me that to my face. If you are over 50 and have to work, don't try the North. You may very well find you will never work again and after your saving is gone, may find yourself homeless and destitute as I did. The one thing no one prepares you for, at least here in the North, is agism in the work force, its real and its brutal. I'm now on usa s security and am living once again like a human being. 2 years I had to live in a tent in the mountains for lack of anywhere to go. Where you land, your age, whether or not you are connected, your age matters more than you could ever imagine. That being said, I would have come anyway, I love Israel and can not imagine living anywhere else. Aliyah isn't for the faint of heart.

I studied Hebrew for years on my own in America, I had a good vocabulary, could conjugate in all tenses almost any verb, make nouns from a verb but nothing, whatsoever prepared me for how fast Israelis speak, how much slang they speak or the varying accents from Jews who came from all over the world, I still struggle in a personal conversation in spite of the fact, I understand most Israeli tv shows, if, I slow them down and read the captions line by line. Its not as easy to become fluent as people will tell you. Maybe if you start out as a teenager but not later in life.

The lady from America is right, in 12 years Israel is constantly changing things to make it better. No, its not perfect and there are plenty of things that make you frustraited but, Israel is always changing for the better, always.

I like what the lady from England said, You have to understand that you are moving to a foreign country, its not enough that we are all Jews because Jews around the world have different customs and traditions and language. Our greatest mistake was moving to a very Israeli North and now 12 years never fitting in, not one Israeli friend. They seem to hear the english accent and zehu, you get no more than a passing conversation at best. We are moving to Beersheva in our fourth attempt to find a place where we can have some kind of a normal life, meeting people, making friends, feeling like we are home.

Thank you very much for organising this excellent talk. Fascinating talks about the different parts of Haifa. Smadar sounds an incredible resource in helping settle there. Having listened I’m now attracted to the Ahuza district! Would have been interesting to hear some current examples of house prices, but that’s for another time. Thanks too for organising these talks on the various parts of Israel that are of interest to Olim, and for your dedication in making them so comprehensive.

Loved all the interview from olim who chose Karmiel to live. Karmiel is the sister city of Pittsburgh, PA. I loved seeing Tzipporah and Dr. Abrams who made Pittsburgh one of their stops in life. All those you have interviewed have basically convinced me that I would love Karmiel to settle in. Thanks for this Zoom meeting was very informative.
