Oh 100%. Up until the list we had seen them once or twice, and they didn't do all that much. Since then we have been ripped apart by a few, so our appreciation and fear of them is growing.

Ive been avoiding this scenario because i couldn't quite understand what the rules were getting at. I wonder, after hearing you guys talk about it, if originally the scenario was more complicated, wih an advantage of some sort if the they were "higher" (like +1 range/move for each hight advantage), but it was too much and rules simplified after play testing.
@amdirt
@amdirt 9 күн бұрын
Totally possible and I can see how they could have implemented that, but it might have been slightly explored in another scenario. I guess its a fine line between, how thematic and cool can we make this until it becomes a bloated hot mess.

I'm starting at level two with Honeypot, Boar Catcher, Caltrops, Exploding Decoy, Dismantle, Spike Pit, Improvised Improvement, Enticing Bait, and Path of Pain. When short resting, can you rank the cards to decide which to lose first? Which should I choose to lose first?

Not sure why this popped up in my recommends so late, but it did, so here's my take. No, I didn't back DS, I bought by copy used, then acquired everything for the original sets, including all the KS-exclusive bosses (luckily got them for a very cheap price off a person on BGG). To date I've only played this RAW, 145 times. I never saw or felt the need for house rules. You said in your video that you were doing the same encounter for the fourth time. To me that sounds as either being way too cautious and grinding for gear and stats that aren't necessary or you were just incredibly unlucky with your item draws. This game has never been about grind and gearing yourself to the gills for me, it's been just get enough to see you defeat the boss, even if it means taking a boss down with something like Black Firebombs (solo run I reference below that was my weapon for beating both mini and main boss, hell, I was tempted to try and beat the mega boss with it just for the memes :D ). Black Firebombs isn't a great weapon, it's not even a good weapon but it was all I needed so what would've been the point to grind? It got the job done. I recently pulled the game back out again for two runs (and have more planned). In the solo hero run I cleared all four encounters (of which there are 31 different for each level if you have all expansions, so there is variety to the enemies you face from run to run), reset and ran them again, then took on the mini boss. Same deal for the main boss. Both of those cases, I could've reset four more times and earned 32 extra souls, so basically drawn 32 more cards, prior to mini boss, then prior to main boss. Instead I went for the boss and defeated the boss, earning only four souls. But I beat the boss so I was equipped enough to do it, plus had the luck and skill to pull it off. And each session only took about 60-75 min, that's solid enough playtime in my book, doesn't overstay its welcome. My second run was running two characters solo. This time I played through the encounters three times, still clocking in at 75 min per session. Midway through the run I was even able to switch one of the heroes from a dodge build to more of a tank build while also swapping my weapon loadout, something I could never do in Bloodborne Board Game (which I backed All-In on KS) since in that game you're stuck with whatever weapon you start with. Bloodborne actively encourages the player from getting into combat, I always refer to it as an "action economy puzzle" since the timer is far more strict and not fighting enemies seems contradictory to the whole idea of being a Hunter (and BB in general). But in it enemies are a distraction from completing the main goal. And because the tiles in BB are so small, boss fights lack all the maneuvering and positioning you get in DS, boiling down to standing next to the boss and spamming R1 until one of you drops.

Having played both Shackles and Meteor was there a play style that you enjoyed more or found easier/harder to play? I get the feeling Meteor is more about managing the monsters and terrain on the board while Shackles is managing status of your character.
@amdirt
@amdirt 27 күн бұрын
Good question. I feel both styles of characters 'in general' i felt were the harder styles of play compared to the other options I saw (aka Tanky/ranged shackles and Haz Meteor). Meteor with Quenched Rage depended a lot more on timing attacks and building up towards a big hit at least my build did. That had tricky moments but probably more because playing as 4 people the board state was constantly changing and sometimes by the time it got to me my plans would change. I'd honestly say Shackles was harder to play but that's literally because I was playing around the timing and usage of one card, and if for some reason I got that timing wrong, it could drastically affect the impact of my turns. Shackles had more considerations around trying to collect the conditions etc as well. Meteor was more an internal game, making sure I could plan it all ahead so I could unleash a devasating attack on a priority target. This could really be done at any time during any given scenario, whereas if I blew DM on the shackles and the room is cleared rather quickly due to teammates it has ended up as a waste as I blow charges of DM just moving into the next room to setup for whatever is in there. Getting my head around that sometimes was the hardest part of playing shackles and feeling godlike.

Did you have a set order for cards that you lost when you long rested?
@amdirt
@amdirt Ай бұрын
It's been a while but I don't think I had a set card I'd lose but it would depend on the situation. If it was towards the end of the scenario and the build up for Quenched Rage was no longer needed, i'd happily ditch it. Maybe one of the few attacks I took, or if burn opporunities for cards such as igneous path or swelter weren't going to get a good use i'd burn those off. But normally I would adjust the priority based on the remaining scenario conditions and what I can afford to lose comfortably.

Like I remember you have unlocked the Hunting Lodge at this point but I can't remember you talking about stuff it unlocks, which could be to prevent spoilers or bc you didn't fully grasp the "read this when you build this" rule yet (not impossible since you talk about not unlocking the starting craftables here) Super nice Podcast btw, thanks for sharing your experiences
@amdirt
@amdirt Ай бұрын
Hey, thanks for stopping by and giving it a listen. It was a while ago and the podcast has evolved a fair bit since around this time. There is a point where we start to share more spoilery things (mostly around events and definitely class unlocks) and we had bonus episodes (on audio only) called amDirt Raw where we would delve deeper into some spoiler territory. Unfortunately despite having a campaign sheet it would have been a little tough to keep everyone updated on how our campaign is going as we only have so long to record it and fit the things we need to get into each episode so apologies for lacking some of the details. But the feedback is important and we might have to update people every 5 episodes or so about the campaign and outpost progress which is giving me food for thought if we ever do this all over again for a different game. Again thanks for dropping in and I hope you enjoy the future episodes as we start to get a lot more comfortable and it prepares us for a big launch with Gloomhaven 2.0 eventually :)

Aloha, I am now playing the fist and reached level 5 which is a game changer because of the card recovery card. Fist definitely needs items to become more resilient because if you try to tank some times as I do then your stamina will be greatly reduced. At scenario 28 that is pretty difficult at hard difficulty, I had to lose two cards to negate damage. I managed to fulfill the scenario's objective during mhy last turn and because an enemy missed an attack EDIT: How did you achieve the 10-move? Since the ice forces you to go one up the direction. I saw you backtracked. I imagine you did that because of the perk
@amdirt
@amdirt Ай бұрын
Mark must have used the perk for the movement but i'm not 100% sure because it was a while back and he was doing it. And OOF your story of that scenario was damn lucky ahah
@hammerspace8866
@hammerspace8866 9 күн бұрын
The perk allow you to ignore the forced movement in the same direction and icy terrain gives you +1 move whenever you enter icy terrain. (I like to call it the ice skating perk) So in theory you get infinite move as long as you stay on icy terrain.(good for some equipment that requires you to have done a minimum amount of move) The mastery is realtively easy to get. It just requires setting up alot of icy terrain and having a brittled enemy that has high enough health. Or drawing a crit if you didn't have time to brittle the enemy.

I tried to make the sword work too. It was always so much work for little gain. I used it for the mastery and a few missions. The bottom was worth it for a while though. It is easy XP in the end, helps stabilize health, and give an easy infusion next round. Also enhancing it with a bonus heal or even a ward/strengthen is super cheap.

Yeah we've done 4 now and its starting to come together, but i'm being a lot more selective on whether the scenario will be a good one for it or not. I'm determined to make it work but yeah, scenario choice and monster choice seems to be integral to getting it right.

Definitely excited to hear about how you guys pull off some sweet Astral combos. It’s only a matter of time before Detty starts blowing his load just like on Meteor. What makes astral built different from the rest of us is that the loads will just keep getting bigger. I’m playing prism right now and was also really enticed by the card that allows you to bring back two robots. I’m always playing reassemble as I’m so worried about losing my bots. When I first started I was really excited to see it was an 11 card class as I love having tons of options. I was kind of disappointed when I learned that the 11th card was locked into being burned turn one for your mode. Honestly I think the prism could use an extra card in hand but maybe that would make it too strong.

I backed the game also. And honestly, I love the core set rules. I don't think it needed to be fixed. It was a near perfect adaption of the video game into board game. The issue people have with grinding is one that exists in video games as well. It's not that it doesn't translate over well, it's that it translates over too well. The vast majority of people dislike JRPGs for example, and a reason for that is usually the grind involved in them. Now board gamers get to experience the grind, and surprise! Most people don't like it. I do agree Steamforged Games completely dropped the ball on this though, at every stage. I haven't bought from them again and I don't think I ever will. They lost my trust and as someone that isn't buying more from them, they are unlikely to be able to win it back.
@amdirt
@amdirt 2 ай бұрын
Interesting point about the way its translated a little too well.. I think you nailed that! I think SFG has picked the ball back up since, but yeah there's some damage that would have occurred through the handling of DS leading to people in the same position, but they've probably also accumulated a lot of newer fans from the more recent things they've put out.
