Hi, Informative video. Just wondering what level you have your zebra's set to? It seems even in your correctly exposed shots, there are zebra's showing on the models skin. I thought the purpose of zebra's was to show overexposed areas?
@photechvideo26 күн бұрын
@@duncanthorn6338 many thanks for your comments. I am glad you found the video informative. What an excellent question! Well, as the Panasonic S5 has 2 Zebras, I have them both turned on. Zebra 1 at 70% and Zebra 2 at 100%. One of the zebra's stripes goes in one angle and the other the opposite angle. When I see zebra 1 kick in on the face, I know that exposure is more or less right for the skin tones and if Zebra 2 kicks in then I am beginning to overexpose the whole image. The 70% rule for skin tones for me seems to work really well. I hope that answers your question. Take care and be safe. Andy.

EASY HSS
@photechvideoАй бұрын
@@chazM6116 Thank you for your comment. High Speed Synch is useful in some situations. However, if you want to open the aperture right up on your lens in the studio and therefore ambient light enters the image, HSS will not help. Remember that this video relates to using fully open apertures in the studio where we want to get a totally black frame when flashes are off. As I clearly explain in the video, I am on my flash synch speed which is 1/200 and my ISO is at it's minimum 100. This means that in my camera with the ambient light in my studio (video lights) that I need an aperture of F5.6 to shut out all ambient light. If I stop up my lens to F1.8 which is 3 stops difference, the ambient light enters into the image which can be clearly seen in the first minutes of the video. An alternative woud be a Hasselbld with its leaf shutter lenses. Or using HSS. But I do not own a Hassy. Therefore I use a 4 Stop ND-Filter when I do want to shoot with open aperatures in the studio. I have no control about the ambient light. I did not find any VND-Filter without a heave color cast. The video ist a little lifeless with such a calm model...
@photechvideoАй бұрын
@@andreasstolten9179 Thank you for your comments. Yes, you can use a fixed 4 stop Nd filter. This will cut out any unwanted ambient light. 4 stops might be a bit much unless you are using an F1.4 or lower. If your Nd filter makes the image darker than just on the edge of ambient light entering into the image, then you will need to increase the power output on your flash(es), but yes, that is totally workable. I am happy with the colour cast from my K&F Concept Nano Variable ND Filter but from what I have read, the colour shift can be more or less intense with ND filters depending on the lens and camera. @@zombie_bear1797 many thanks for your comment. In answer to your question, I think the only way to reduce the flicker in this video would have been to adjust the shutter speed until the flicker disappeared (find the correct frequency). However, this would have been a solution for some of the flickering but not for all of it, as each street vendor was using different power supplies with different frequencies and therefore I would have needed to adjust the shutter speed for each street vendo's light. I made a few modifications to the lens. First I took off the screw mount by loosening the three screws at the back and reassembled it in a position so that the scales for focus and aperture are in the upright position, when the lens is mounted to the camera. Then I opened the aperture all the way and put a mark on the adapter by scratching off the black color right at the position where the 1.7 number is. When you then turn the aperture ring, you can see to which number the aperture is closed. The third modification is inside the lens, when you set the focus to the nearest position then a silver colored tube is visible on the back which could make inner reflections inside the lens. To minimize this, I painted the tube with black matte color which is used in modelling and available in this tiny containers. The lens has a 35 mm filter thread and I bought also a lens hood for this. The hood has a front thread of 46 mm and on this I screwed a circular polarizing filter. With this modifcations the contrast of the lens is greatly improved by preserving all its character. The best results come out when the lens is stopped down a bit to approx. 4. But this is not a problem at all, because the character of the lens is not archived mainly by depth of field but by the really bad field curvature, which means that even stopped down it is never possible to get sharpness from edge to edge. That makes it a wonderful portrait lens and the bokeh swirls like crazy. When the flaring is too much it also helps to block the incoming light with a hand outside of the frame. Just experiment with it and have fun!
@uterzorker56464 ай бұрын
And don't expect that this lens will last forever. It is made for fixed installed CCTV Security Cameras and intended to get mounted and set one time. For this, it is over-engineered but used in photography the mechanics get weak, which is no surprise. After four years, the focus thread on my lens has so much play in it, that it is now super-fiddly to nail the focus, but I had already bought two of them and today I decided to switch to the second one. I can't see any difference, the second copy is quite as good (or bad) as the other one.

Hi @uterzorker5646 many thanks for your comments. I love the way you have adapted the lens. It is exceptionally interesting and I am sure that it gives you a more correct reading for your aperture and that your infinity focus has improved. I hope your comments will help other viewers to see how a few tweaks to the lens can enhance its performance. Yes, even at about f4 it still gives a beautiful bokeh and the characteristics of the out of focus points on the same plane make it great for portrait photography. In fact, I will be making a video very shortly using the Fujian 35mm F1.7 for a portrait session. Take care and be safe

Yes @uterzorker5646 I imagine that the lens will start to give problems after a while. As you correctly mention, the Fujian 35mm f1.7 was made for security cameras and only intended to be set once. Not continuously manipulated many time in every use. I am so glad to receive your comments and feedback. Take care and be safe.

Would flashes with modeling lights reduce the need to fiddle with the flash positioning after every shot?
@photechvideo4 ай бұрын
Hi again @verberry. Thanks you so much for your comments and for interacting.The answer to your question is yes and the Neewer Q3 flashes do have a modelling light, albeit a bit dim. I wanted to demonstrate in the video how any type of flash, including those without modelling lamps can be moved and adjusted to obtain the desired lighting effect. Most of all, I want people to lose the fear of moving their lights, camera and subject as the more you experiment, the more confident you feel at controlling the light in your images.

How are you using a Neewer flash trigger on a Panasonic S5?
@photechvideo4 ай бұрын
Good question @veryberry. I am using the Neewer Q Pro Nikon version and it triggers my Q3 flashes perfectly as long as I don't go try to go into High Speed Sync. By the way, the Nikon version of the Neewer Q Pro also triggers the same flashes when used on my Sony ZV E10 as long as I don't try to go into High Speed Sync.

Nice video on the Long Exposure setting. I bought the Pro due to it's long lens which the regular 8 lacks. If it wasn't for that feature, I'd have gotten the 8. Still learning about this camera as only had it a month. As a long time photo enthusiasts, it will be a while before my skill catches up to the cameras ability.

Nice informative video. But I see excess un related information. It will be better if you can keep the video short. Better stick to the topic this way it will be short and accurate. But the video is great.
