Sir, I just got the proper (rx tip / tx ring / sleeve ground) cable and have the modified the n1mm macros as you demonstrated. However I have no clue how to configure the radio and other related settings for the QCX mini withn those configuration panels. Any help in the configuration section would be greatly appreciated.
@Linas_LY2HКүн бұрын
@@GaryUtz Hello Gary, thanks for watching! I think, there is no specific settings needed in the QCX mini in order to run the CAT and the N1MM. You just need to have the right cable, plug it into the ACC socket on the QCX, configure your N1MM software in the computer and off you go. The best way to see if the radio talks to the N1MM logger is to rotate the VFO knob on the radio and see if the frequency moves also on the computer in the logger entry window. HTH , good luck! 73! Thanks for this Linas! You've addressed the biggest weak point of the Buddipole. (no shade - it's "the Lego of antennas") Adding a small tip for others trying this project: if you don't already own the plastic pipe (it's rather expensive here in Canada!), you can simply buy a plastic COUPLER for a few dollars/Euros and use a saw to cut it in half, sanding the cut side smooth. Also: a simple 1/4-20 button-head screw can be used in-lieu of trimming the Buddipole tap, and ring-connectors used to connect the base of the coil to the new slider. Cheers & 73! 🇱🇹 🇨🇦

Thank you, Linas. I enjoyed your radio van activation video very much. Yesterday here in the U.S. I took my radio van to a POTA park for a short CW activation on 17 meters following a longer period operating Winter Field Day with CW and PSK-31 on 20 meters. I have a very similar antenna setup in my van with a 5 meter whip on top of a 40 meter coil. It is resonant on 40m with the coil inline. I short out the coil for 20m operating. I can also work 17, 15, 12, and 10m by shortening the telescopic whip sections until resonant. I had plenty of other wire antennas to use for yesterday's activation, but enjoyed a full day of operating 20m without having to change any settings. I'm fortunate to have plenty of lithium battery power and a 3000w inverter, so I could cook my lunch in the van during a break from radio time. 72, Paul - N4FTD

Can I ask what CW iambic mode you've set your radio for? I prefer Mode A, but the IC-7300 only does Mode B. The extra dit is making learning Morse difficult for me. Thanks.
@Linas_LY2H19 күн бұрын
@@sincerelyyours7538 Thanks for your question. I, actually, don't care about A or B in the IC-7300 ( it seems it's only B , though) as I don't run real Iambic :) It is may be just a few letters which I send in a Iambic way, i.e. , squeezing and releasing both levers. And If you don't press them together, the "normal" CW can be sent, independantly of the keyer being "Iambic A" or "B". I learned my code on a straight key , my first electronic keyer was not a Iambic and had a mono-lever paddle, and when I got to know the Iambic keyers and dual-lever paddles, I found no clear benefits in training myself in pure Iambic , so I mostly run any keyer and any paddle the simple way since. I also often feel sentimental about the straight key, especially operating QRP radios :) Good luck in learning your code! 73! Linas LY2H

In my honest opinion, IC-7300 or any similar QRO is an overkill for POTA. The same result can be achieved using IC-705 or any other QRP without any problem, especially on CW or FT8 using a good antenna, like vertical using ground or elevated radials that can be erected in a few minutes :) Happy holidays, 73 de YT3TCA
@Linas_LY2H20 күн бұрын
@@aleksandarzphotography Yes and no:) It depends on where you are and what is your goal. If you only need 10 QSO's and you are in the ham radio- dense area, it is no probs to make it with 1-5 W and a short wire or vertical antenna. If you are in the park which is a rear entity and you want as many hunters as possible to work this entity, like 200 + contacts, then 60-80W and a full size dipole is what you need. If the conditions are good, the same could be achieved with some 30-40W. Also, having 100W radio and running it at 30-60W is very healthy and safe for the radio. This is my personal experience, based on real-life activations from the Northern part of Europe, YMMV. 73! Linas LY2H

I am planning to put up my 18m telescopic fiberglass mast permanently: Would the taut line hitch tension knot be good enough for permanent installation considering wind and long time? Thank you very much for the video and explanations. 73 from Chile
@Linas_LY2HАй бұрын
@@SairentoPīsu Hello OM, thanks for watching! I only use my masts for portable installations, so I have only tested these knots in the field days, park activations etc. Permanent installation is much more demanding situation influenced by many more factors, like the elements, UV radiation, vibrations, quality and composition of the rope, etc. So, it is difficult for me to predict how would the knot behave under all these conditions. I used to have my 18m mast standing for about one month in the field supported by 2 rows of 4mm guying ropes terminated with the taut line hitches, but this is not the same as permanent installation. So, this is not my advise, but you can surely try it out , on your own responsibility, and see, or you can opt for some other mechanical means of fixing the ropes. Please bare in mind that 18m mast is quite heavy and big construction and could be dangerous for people , pets or buildings nearby in case of falling. Good luck! 73! Linas LY2H

@Linas_LY2H ok linas, I have just watched someone set up the cw and ssb tx and rx, and boy oh boy it took a long time, and it was unbelievably complicated. About 25 different buttons. To actually tx looked like a nightmare, a 45 minute video and then it was off freq, and couldn't hear the cw sig because the bandwidth would not stay fixed, and 10 sigs were heard at once, so no chance of actually working the stn hi. Think you need to make a stop by step guide to tx and rx cw, then another for ssb. I did like the cw memory, but did not understand why it has mems for txt and then actual cq etc, and you had to bring the whole menu up to access it all , no easy way from the front panel, except buying the mouse. I honestly think, I will receive this radio and find it way to difficult to set up, I will just sell it hi. Thanks for your info.

@ QSL Brian. Well, I haven't seen this horror video :), but normally, the radio comes with all the menus set at default values in the factory and these settings guarantee the radio will work out of the box in CW and SSB. The most user-important menus, like output power, CW speed, etc are all put under one knob, mainly, or are linked with physical buttons on the radio, like Band, Mode etc. The CW and SSB filter bandwith, noise reduction etc is put under another knob. So, it's only 2 knobs and some 4 buttons which bring you to the nice and big menu window on a display with touche buttons in it. Everything is pretty intuitive. Easy-peasy, you'll see! 73! Linas LY2H
