It’s hit or miss man. It’s not every back pocket I’d say like 30% are all the way back but still tons of fish hanging back off shore. Water temps still close to 70 again 👎🏻

New to SML lake. Been fishing FL lakes for past 15 years and trying to remember how to fish highland reservoirs. Seems like rain every day since moving here. Then Helene and lights out for 10 hrs. My question What’s the best place to start north of bridge or south. East sides or west sides? Everything looks so fishy. Some areas smell fishy. Remembering from when I used to break down a HR lake, channel swings, main lake, secondary points, back in coves and seasonal transition. Fall and spring similar transition same for winter and summer. I guess I should have listened to your pod cast first. Thanks for answering all my questions.
@billy_kohlsfishing2 ай бұрын
Hey yale, it's typical Highland Res stuff with the upper areas of the lake acting a lot more like a river. SML fish move ALOT so I wouldn't say there is a area that is amazing 12 months out of the year. Bass should be moving shallow for the next few months so focus back in creek arms half way back and more with a topwater to locate some fish and then slow it down when its tough in those same areas. Tight Lines.

@@billy_kohlsfishing Thanks again Billy. Tried yesterday and went to Park Place and tried at the back of creek and started working my way out to main lake. Most activity on my scope and surface was 1/3 of way out to main lake point. No bites. Try again today North of Bridge. Striper guide got stripers and LM 20’ live bait. So there are fish here. 😂

Chatterbait question for SML ……. is that something that you catch bass on consistently on SML. For the life of me, I cannot get them to work here. I keep seeing videos of how great they are on KZbin but I just don’t have any success with them.

The problem with Smith mountain lake and big tournaments, it's a party lake. Early 2000's they had a big tournament. Pros two main complaints. One Hotel and accomodations staying for the tournament and two it's a party lake. Seafood, wake boats, bar hoppers, stripper fishermen. There is so much boating activity. Makes it tough through the summer months. Late winter/ early spring or October would be prime for the big tournaments.
@billy_kohlsfishing2 ай бұрын
Yea man it's a crazy busy lake and the low accommodation doesn't help. I guess we will see how MLF likes it in 2025.

Why does dobyns list their 1 power rods as their Dropshot rods yet almost everyone with a dedicated dropshot setup from dobyns uses a 2 power?
@billy_kohlsfishing3 ай бұрын
Hey Katie, I think it comes down to personal preference. I do use a 721 rod for my dropshot stuff when I’m using an open hook style bait. I just use the 702 more since I dropshot in brush so much. I think you’d be happy with either or both 😁

A little Swimbait like a megabass spark shad on a 3/8oz head is a good choice so you can sling it far off the dock.

Good stuff, man! So much to learn in freshwater fishing, since I've done mostly inshore saltwater wade-fishing in FL. I had the most success there using lures like the Mirrolure Catch-5, jigs with swimbaits, and Carolina rigs with live Alewives. I moved to VA last year, and am learning kayak fishing for bass/multi-species now. I know you mainly fish Smith Mountain Lake, but I was wondering, do you have any tips for Philpott lake? Also, if you had to bring only maybe 2 rods, limited tackle, and were in a kayak, what types of baits would you most likely try for spring bass fishing? Would you first try the north, middle or south side of the lake this time of year?
@billy_kohlsfishing8 ай бұрын
Hey man. Yea I have fished Philpott a good amount of times at this point. I would have a shaky head on for dropping on the rock walls and I would have a spinnerbait on for getting into the dirty water. I would focus up the river to start around laydowns.
