@dieselnation55524 күн бұрын
@Derek-C mine is basically all stock, too. i do have a balanced crank but no fluidampner or billet crank pulley. @@dieselnation555 yeah it’s fairly surprising how much the stock bottom ends hold when they are balanced and I haven’t really heard much about rod failure but I guess those are forged and nobody has taken them to the limit, Usually it’s like the crank or bearings that go out if anything, or cracked pistons

Back in the 80's I went to school for the Chevrolet D truck (CUCV), engine and all. Everytime I see the words "performance upgrade" with the 6.2 or 6.5, I cringe. These engines were not designed to be hot rod power plants. Many of the engines failed early on because people drove them like they were SBC's, not knowing how to operate a diesel. It was a big learning curve for the Army as the went from 1976 Dodge pickups with 318 V8 gassers to a 1985 Chevy truck with a diesel. I personally owned a 84 Scottsdale K20 with 6.2(J) and the wife had a 87 Jimmy with the 6.2(C), and never had big any big problems with either. They ain't meant to be hot rodded

That's a good list of upgrades there I think! What about injector pre-cups though? May not be critical, but if you're taking off the heads anyway, might as well change them out to something that plays nicer with the turbos and injectors. Nice to see a twin turbo config too! I'm definitely interested in doing something like that. Even cooler would be to get rid of the crossover pipe and go full dual exhaust! Don't forget the harmonic balancer upgrade so you don't eventually break your stock *cast* crankshaft (instead of forged like Detroit specified). And take a look at upgrading the oil hosing and water pump and the radiator & fan. You need that reliability before you can safely do power upgrades without something failing catastrophically down the line. Also an upgraded main belt pulley may do a lot of good so the belt (which runs some critical components) runs smoother and doesn't wear out as quick. Maybe consider timing gears instead of chain, for precision and longevity.
@dieselnation5557 ай бұрын
Can't put everything in one video gotta save some for a part 2 list lol but yes precups are a Performance upgrade. I do have the cross over deleted and my truck is a true dual configuration for the exhaust it's much handier than single pipe because you can find out engine malfunctions super fast. As for the harmonic balancer and crank shaft that's a bullet proofing upgrade it won't get you more horsepower but it'll let you make more power reliably. Stock water pump are fine and fan and radiator upgrade are a waste of money I've tried everything except the radiator and none of it works there's 2 simple cooling upgrades that cost approximately 100 bucks combined and it works worlds better than anything quadstar or any other site sells. Other wise the timing gears isn't worth the money for its extra "reliability" if it didn't cost a arm and a leg I'd include it in the lists to come but honestly it's far to expensive for the reliability you gain
@Arexodius7 ай бұрын
@@dieselnation555Oh, so you do run dual exhaust. Sweet! So you're basically saying that installing an intercooler is the best thing you can do for better thermals? But is that the only things that makes a difference? I just find it hard to believe that an engine that is prone to overheating from factory only benefits from adding an intercooler and nothing else needs improvement. At least others on YT have reported improvements with upgrading radiator and water pump. Maybe the pump only makes sense if you also upgrade the radiator. Or maybe their stock pump was just going bad. I'm curious, how does running a twin turbo/exhaust setup affect thermals for you? Is there any difference?
@dieselnation5557 ай бұрын
@Arexodius yessir and intercooler is pretty good but combine it with methanol injection and you get power and even lower iat and egt's. But no you can't buy a intercooler set up for less than 100 bucks lol I'm talking about the reducer fitting for the water pump from the coolant crossover pipe and making a rear coolant cross over pipe those 2 upgrades alone will keep your 6.5 cooler than it actually needs to be 100% and combined those 2 upgrades are less than 100 bucks. I've used the water pump and fan and clutch upgrade the truck couldn't haul itself up hill without over heating lol I never tried the radiator but I know people from the Facebook groups who've done all the quadstar upgrades and still have over heating issues so they spent over 1000 bucks for basically no good reason. And I've ran single turbo trucks with stock turbos and after marker turbos both of those trucks would get up to 1200°c super fast the twin turbo set up has only seen 750°c at wide open throttle going 190kmh giving her all she had to offer. Performance wise twin turbos are the best set up you can currently make yourself. Also the turbos only do half the work for the same amount of performance only thing is with mine having large turbos it suffers on the lower end power until it builds boost that is lol
@Arexodius7 ай бұрын
@@dieselnation555Thanks for the advice! I'll have to look into that. I saw a video with www.youtube.com/@shawnsgarage where he explains how he routed cooling lines to the back of the engine. Seemed like a neat setup. Cortland from GSC also suggested doing that. When it comes to water meth I'm a bit apprehensive. I get how it helps a lot on several fronts, but I'm also hearing about increased risk of corrosion on the inside of the engine, the last place you want corrosion. If there is any truth to that whatsoever, I'm not sure it's something I'd wanna invest in despite the advantages. Unless these kits allow you to postpone any injection until everything is a bit warmer and then shut off the injection at least a couple of seconds before engine shut down to keep any residual moisture out of the internals, since steel and moisture in normal outside temps is a perfect recipe for corrosion. IDK. Someone said the nozzle placement played a role in how much corrosion you may or may not see. Seems like a great idea if it weren't for that whole deal. No engine lasts forever, but I'd sure like to come as close as possible.

Loving my 6.5 so far. Currently hooking up my Carter fuel pump (Leroy relay harness) and CAT filter, installed glow shift gauges so I can monitor my boost/fuel/egt’s, next mod is my HX35 intercooled swap set to 14lbs, then an quadstar chip. The 4” straight pipe was a huge improvement over stock and reasoning for the hx35 swap is to reduce back pressure and run 1:1 or less at 14-15lbs.
