It's gone all fuzzy. When I saw this the first time round, in my youth, in the eighties, it was crystal clear and I was captivated. Venice lives on as does Rome - in a sense it is Rome. From the muddy brine of the Adriatic, following evolution's path, it emerges to mix metaphors and cliches like a Phoenix from the ashes of one empire to a rebirth of another. Its temporal power not quite extinguished until Napoleon makes his brief by comparison appearance on the European stage and today reinvented another Phoenix rises, dusted off shining bright and fleecing the devoted tourist, offering a willing neck for the privilege. Nature will reclaim her as she does us all. Toodle pip.

nathanbridle - sculptress?!? Dear me, how very 1950's. Sculptor doesn't need an ess at the end because the artist is a woman, the same way poet and manager work absolutely fine for both sexes. Apart from the dated intro, thanks for posting!

In a way, an elegant summation of Gore's "doom ridden imagination", a phrase once applied to another master from another time, Thomas Hardy. Their dark sides are strangely uplifting to me, serving as reminders that time is short and to, as yet another who traffics in the dark side entitled one of his songs, Do Your Best and Don't Worry

Thank you so much for the upload. Having read most of Gore's novels and many of his essays, these videos are a wonderful addition to my "completeist" self. An endless source of knowledge and inspiration, Gore is such a pleasure to listen to.
