Guy: thanks so much for this. Does anyone know of a video where Guy talks about how to use timing (ie, consequences for things taking a long time) and to easily track time in one's games?

Some solid general guidelines, but even more narrow-minded, self-absorbed, overly generalized and prescriptive opinions. Instead of needlessly arguing the actual points, I just hope new GMs don’t take this discouragement to heart and dare to fail forward to find their own unique style of running a game. There are as many valid approaches, as there are tables to play at. And despite all agency and creative license, players do not get a carte blanche for being inconsiderate, tone-deaf agents of chaos, whenever they feel like it.

I don’t want to give my idea away but I have a problem with #2. Let’s say it can work with all kinds of scenarios. What if you have versions of the game and maybe add updates or books for later; one is fantasy, another supernatural, maybe not horror in my case but you get the idea. It would be so much extra work I know. Does it sound impossible?

The only advice I can give that's DnD compatible is: DIRECT the player's action. You do this by adressing a very clear center of tension within the combat, and ask the player to act upon it OR do something else. If the player had no specific action in mind, you just gave them a great leadway, but if they did want to do something different, they will tell you. "The barbarian is surrounded by enemies and tanking hits like a pro... for now. Will you do something about it, ot does something else call your attention?" "Actually, wasn't there a commander mounting a giant Beetle?" "Yes! He is... "

As an avid and lifelong German, I'd just like to politely point out that you're only showing TDE - 5th edition. That is fine, since Ulisses sponsored this video, and I don't think any less of you - I'd just like to point out that you are, therefor, objectively wrong. :) Seriously though - while I don't want to dabble too much into all the typical edition wars known (and loved) from other systems, between 4.1 and 5, changes were made - specifically to the lore and world - which iffed many lifelong fans. And if you do manage to get a glimpse into the 'old' TDA rulebooks, I can only wholeheartedly encourage it!

loved it to bits! great roleplaying from every single one!! i love that dorin saw fortune in the de-aging vials, as most dwarves value gold above most things, and he went with it, and got a shit load of gold for it! also beautiful roleplaying from grace when it came to mothers caring and sharing amongst eachother, for the benifit of the child, and learning songs of both cultures <3 and the sparring contest of averadus with the general was also very cool explained, what techniques envolved in the sparringcontest and that rant of gottfried was just sooo perfect!! and the composure and ability to be able recieve criticism after the anger had left him, was sublime

Teamwork makes the dream work, or so I'm told. One thing I would like to add as a bit of caution: don't try and "force teamwork". A buddy of mine has a habit of making characters that become inextricable from the party. Either because his character's backstory provides a super easy "this is why we're traveling together!" (where he's the center point, like the head of a business) or something equally difficult to work with (literally "he own the spaceship everyone rides around on"). It never quite lands for me, maybe it lands for other people.

I've been doing this work since 2020 and while it can be enjoyable it is NOT the same as home sessions with your buddies. I am blessed to have clients who have become good friends. Running sessions for clients is still 100% work. You are also going to have to pitch to the desires of your audience. Would I love to run Pendragon, Yes, totally! Blades in the Dark? 100% all day, here for that. Is most of what people want the latest version of D&D with all options ever? Yes mostly. There are times you will feel less like chef and more like a line cook on a lunch rush.

Deviating slightly from the topic, you can actually include *your GM* in the team building and practicing, too! After all, they're a fellow player (and usually friend), too, and it's not like they don't know what's going on, so why not include them in the comradery for once? One reason you might do this is if the differences in your characters are at odds and are preventing teamwork from happening naturally, or as well as it could. This happened to me recently - my wizard character is all about empowering friends and dis-empowering enemies and then letting my friends go in and kill the stuff super dead; in exchange, he's not very good at killing stuff himself. However, I recently realized that while he can do this with martial and ranged characters really well, his options for assisting a fellow spellcaster who joined the party recently are extremely lacking in the game. There are SOME options for this, but they're incredibly weak in the system RAW. So I petitioned my GM after the game and asked for help in creating a suped up version of an existing spell that's designed for one spellcaster to boost another's magic as they're casting. My GM was absolutely thrilled with this and we agreed to work on it in the coming days to make sure it would work as intended without being over- or underpowered. By doing this, not only will I increase the cohesion I have with the rest of my team, I've also included the GM in that teambuilding exercise, which gives him personal investment in that cohesion as well as giving him the opportunity to show off his rule making muscles in a way that's directly beneficial to my character (he's super good with the rules and with homebrew already). So yeah, don't be afraid to include your GMs for help with the teambuilding if you get an opportunity, because it can pay dividends, both in enhancing your party and character AND in enhancing the entire table's fun!

I wanted it to be a smaller ship so the PCs were no overwhelmed with orders and that starship combat could be 'quick'. My mistake for thinking it would a good idea! A smaller ship requires a captain and crew to know starship combat REALLY well to stay alive. I also am quite fond of the design.

Just came across this Live Play series and it was fantastic and I loved every minute of it. I am a huge fan of Trek, and just recently ran my first (second technically but I'm barely counting the Session Zero we ran) session of STA 2e and it went great. Everyone had a great time, but I had watched your first episode of this prior to that session and we played Starship combat differently because I could not find anywhere in the rulebook where it said that PC SHIPS were limited on major actions to the scale of the ship. In fact, in the third paragraph of the Starship Combat section it literally says that "each character receives a turn in the action order, during which they take actions to operate their ship." So I'm curious, is there a page number you can point me to that states the limit on major actions on a starship? Because the only place I see something similar mentioned is with regards to NPC ships. Also, please yes, Rescue mission please.

In our game, it takes place after the Dominion war and Starfleet is incredibly shorthanded. So our 40 man Saber class ship is mostly manned by a holographic crew. Our players are bridge officers in charge of various departments, and they each control a small team of holograms. It gets silly and weird, as tabletop gamers tend to do.

Sublimely scintillating and spellbinding storytelling 😍I loved how the baby's fate was resolved in a very "pro-choice" manner as well 😉 Got here late BTW because I watched the CALM stream first and that took a while in between real life things. Just in case you got the impression I'd stopped watching.

I love how Dorin sold the vial, gave one to the Dwarves which they sold, and then the other's rolled poorly, and did not get much de-aging. I love when in D&D doing the totally right things often blow up in your face. :)

As someone who lives in an area where Citrus is grown, as long as the soil's fertile and the trees can get water, you'll find that you can indeed grow Citrus in the desert. After all, you'll find citrus groves in parts of North Africa, Spain, and in my home state of Arizona. As long as it doesn't drop below freezing and you keep it watered, you'll find that the trees will thrive in a desert setting. Other fruits, like apples and pears, generally don't do as well in desert environments. Apples, in particular, develop rather woody fruits in hot climates. Now the tricky part is going to be growing Oranges from seed. First issue is that getting citrus seedlings to take root and thrive is a notoriously difficult issue. They are quite difficult to raise from seed. The other issue is that the plant within the seed is not the same plant that grew the orange around the seed. While the young prince/caliphate/ruler may have enjoyed the orange, the oranges he grows may not be so pleasant. It's these two reasons that most citrus trees are a graft of one with a hearty root stalk and a limb from a desirable tree.
