This literally just happened to me 2 days ago, i got about 1 inch in then the saw grabbed and shattered the piece of wallnut into mulch.

Hey mate, two thoughts. One, always hold the wood, just don't use your hand. There is a product called the "million dollar stick" or just use another board ~1-2 feet long and not too wide. Two, this type of small piece is better to cut on a table saw with a table saw sled. Way more control and precision. 3' long and shorter I'm at the table saw. Hope that helps! Ok I lied, 3 things. Get that saw off the floor. You'll kill your back, and the awkward position isn't helping safety any. Even a cheap folding table is an adequate miter saw stand. Just get some blocks to hold the end of longer boards up.
