You're so right about not focusing too much on them. I've often found that after washing and finishing a woven piece the selvedges sort of right themselves, so they don't look as bad as when it's straight off the loom.
@glynisweavesАй бұрын
Personally I find that we obsess too much about our selvedges. We are not machines - we're human and we're allowed some imperfections - we need to learn to embrace these imperfections! Not saying this as an excuse for bad workmanship mind you .......he-he!
@deweygraham24322 ай бұрын
Thank you for showing us how to get even selvedges. I like how you put pressure on the warp thread at the folded over end and then give the weft yarn on the other end a gentle tug to seat the edge. I am definitely going to give this a try tomorrow morning. I think this will speed up my weaving considerably. I won't have to fiddle around with the weft so much. I get so excited when I learn a new technique that solves my problem areas! I am definitely going to subscribe to your channel.

I thought I understood this method well, but you gave a aha moment when you tied the lefthand string and then started to fiddle with the tension. I usually pulled from right to left until there was no more give in the string and the warp too tight. Thank you very much.🎉🎉

This video was just the ticket! Thank you so much. I’d previously been hem stitching the top and bottom of my tea towels in order to avoid the bulky turned hem approach, which I have also tried, but neither has been satisfactory. I am literally right now sitting with my loom, all warped and ready to set off on my next set of towels and I just encountered your channel and saw this video. Off to fetch my sewing cotton! Genius!👌✨ New subscriber x

I’m new to the rigid heddle, usually I’m using a floor loom with a temple. Will a temple help with selvages or long term just end up distorting the weaving?
@glynisweaves6 ай бұрын
Hi Donna. I am not a great fan of using a temple, and really only use one when I am working on my floor looms and either weaving a heavy weft faced structure, or, strangely enough, working with linen. The rest of the time, and especially on mt RH's, I prefer to control my selvedges manually and find that a temple can be a bit distorting. Personal opinion of course.

If a balanced weave includes ‘pick up’ design what category would this fall into?
@glynisweaves8 ай бұрын
To be honest Sue, i've never really thought about it, but, since the pick-up would unbalance the structure, it would, I guess, no longer be classified as balanced. Pick-up patterns usually fall into the category of one or other type of lace weave. The sett for these is the same as for plain weave - remember I talked about the three main types of weave structure - I didn't mention any of the subsidiary structures....

This is so helpful. I’m prob the odd one here but I like the gentle shifts of color shown on the bottom left blue/purple swatch. Some of my variegated yarns are too harsh and would like a way to tone them down a bit!

Saved. My first weaving project (ever) needs the colors to alternate. I was excited to start weaving yesterday after many hrs of prep, but a few inches in, I decided I needed to be patient and catch a few of these tutorials before proceeding. Thank you for your well-made video!
@glynisweaves8 ай бұрын
Hi Amy. I hope you won't mind if I give you the same advice that I give to my new weavers all the time: Be kind to yourself - your first piece won't be your masterpiece. Give yourself permission to play, because we all learn through play, and give yourself permission to make mistakes, because we all learn through making mistakes. Not everything you weave needs to be 'something', sometimes we can weave something just to see if our ideas will work - if they do, that's great. If they don't then we have learnt something. This is a wonderful and absorbing craft - I wish you much joy and many happy hours at your loom.
