Hey there, I don't know if you will see this but I bought this axe after watching your review, and I tried it out today on some dry hickory and on some green private also and it did great I was very impressed by what it did on that tough hickory, so far I love this axe, and for the price, I don't think you can beat it.

Both the Brant & Cochran Cruiser and Dirigo have a hardened poll. Pretty much anything B&C has released as far as I know has the hardened poll. Confirmed with them and they mention it on their website. Search “HOW WE MAKE B&C AXES” and you’ll get directed to their website page that describes the process to make them. “Tempering means we’ll gradually warm the axe head to about 450 degrees, then slowly let it cool. This process will give the entire axe a Rockwell hardness of 56 to 58. We harden the entire axe to allow the poll to be used for other purposes, like driving in wedges or tent stakes. The eye, on the other hand, is softened a bit so it can absorb shock when being used.”

Wow talk about a blast from the past with this video! In hindsight, I think I really really overlooked how there is not much of a difference in the Hults Bruk Agdor and this Kisa…. For the difference in price I’m not convinced that it is worth it and I’m not convinced that it isn’t. It’s just kind of the way it is, but I would encourage you to try out both of them if you have the opportunity. They’re used to be an accident that they made called the “Torneo” that I am convinced is just as good

If I am wearing something like chinos I will tend to carry my Proper. If I am wearing jeans I will usually throw my 112 custom in my pocket. I do have a Duke headed my way that might replace the 112 for the pocket.

Watching you use them with the setup I was afraid you'd have some bias, but calling it a draw for the chopping test seems accurate to me. The SFA had slightly thicker wood to chop past that branch notch. Don't worry about "being that guy" that's "that guy's" issue to worry about. I was splitting wood as a kid with a 5 pound mull and wedge for firewood to heat a house with my brother and our friend growing up. There's a difference between a life style and a way of life people seem confused about these days. Cheers.
@WR3ND

Another observation, I think you had a little better control using the SFA for the tent post test. Seemed like you were getting a little tired and cold there so the weight of the SFA was easier on you. I think were the SFA would fall short would be splitting, so it's a trade off I think, detail work vs. splitting. But yeah, it terms of quality and craftsmanship the SFA isn't a great showing in comparison, so for these specific axes at least, I agree with your assessment. Anyway. thanks for the video. Great recommendations. I subbed.

I file the edges inside the eye for it not to be sharp and cause 90 degree ledges on the shoulders once the head is pounded in snug, those 90 degree ledges can then cause weak points and may cause issues like the one that you just had, but then again, could be just the wood itself. I had a perfect looking handle with no signs of any issues or cracks of any sort, after spending the time sanding it smooth and oiling it, and hanging the head. First swing at a sapling the handle split in half.

Consider your swinging & striking technic. I noted your feet rocking. Set up a flat surface so as to be more sure footed vs standing on bark.

I guess I’m not understanding the relevance of your suggestion based on my video? What is you not train of thought in regards to whether I’m standing correctly or not, and the fact that these Helko Axes are only good for the axe head? Also , I’m standing on a cylinder btw and I’m not a professional logger, so it’s not easy.

True Temper axes are good axes. I have had a slew of them over the past 60 years. My favorites are my TT Boys axe and my 4# Michigan style TT axe. I cannot tell you how many times the Boys Axe has been my wedge banger. I don’t do to much cutting, anymore, just to old to run a chainsaw or weld an axe. However, I am young enough to restore them to factory new condition. I like 31” does leg handles on 4# type axes. I do have Gransfors axes, too, but I still like my TT axes..

I have to say this is my Goldilocks camp axe. It just fits me. Was using a Hultafors HY10 and hating it. Poorly hung and uneven grind. Put it on the belt and tried to even it up with a convex grind. Still not liking it. Gonna try filing it to flat grind next and just consider it my project axe. Picked up a Helko Hessen and like the quality. Great fit and finish and really bites. The balance is just off for me. Feels really head heavy for 2.75 lbs. Feels like I'm throwing a 4 lb felling axe. Had my eye on this cruiser for awhile but didnt want to spend 300+. Saw it pop up for 20% off and said to heck with it. Glad I did. Handle thickness and balance is spot on for me. Opposite of the Helko. It actually feels like a 2lb axe. Super sharp and bites like crazy. Throws some nice chips. Totally enjoying it.

Great video. Like stated above, I think the type of handle should have been different because of the eye. Also, the wedge depth I don't think was deeply enough. I have always read 1/2 to 3/4 quarters down the depth of the eye. Also, do not bottom out your wedge., as you might get wedge bounce back which will loosen it. I have yet to lose a wedge. And I do not use glue or metal wedges. What I do is, I sand smooth the inside of the kerf, and the sides of the wedge. This creates more surface area which in turn creates more friction and I use BLO. BLO will harden to a point and act, almost like glue, but if you need to replace the wedge, and not replace the handle it will be much easier than if you had glute it. I think all of us in this axe community are continuing to learn a grow with every hang.. keep up the great content.

Hey Jay thanks for asking. I have used it and have a bunch of different footage using it. I just have yet to be able to find enough video that flowed well together to make a worthwhile video. I refuse to put up anything just for the sake of putting a video on here. That being said, this is an amazing hatchet and is a tank. It is shocking how good this thing splits and prepares firewood. That along with having a hardened Pole (which is so clutch) makes this a tie with the council tool pack axe for my favorite hatchet sized tool. I will get a video up as soon as I am satisfied with the footage (I'm going to bet that you'll have yours by then). But rest assured and knowing that you made a good choice.
