I notice when I’m working on a project for my studio, I sit there for long hours and it makes me shoulders and back stiff. So I really like the importance of stretching and stuff, especially in between long hours.

For your entry level job, how long did it take you to land it after graduation? Did you do any internships? What looks good on a LARC resume? I’m a Urban Design student and could use all the advice I can get right now

so i’m not in landscape arch., but i’m a landscape design major (my university separates the two) so if people are a tad intimidated but still have a passion for designing landscapes, i would like to recommend trying to find a program at school that focuses more on residential design. landscape architecture is more on par with urban planning, therefore dealing with HUGE spaces. if that isn’t for you but you still have a passion for this, i am very happy with my course of study and just wanted to recommend it as an option!

SketchUp Diffusion is based on Stable Diffusion (developed by Stability AI). Stable Diffusion's underlying dataset is LAION-5B. LAION-5B contains links to images of CSAM and private medical photos. Taking that into consideration, along with the copyright infringement lawsuit against Stability AI, Getty Images suing Stability AI, and the fact the dataset itself is filled with [links to] images & art taken off the web without the consent of those who originally posted/own said images/art...I refuse to use any generative-AI software. There are far too many ethical concerns I can't turn a blind eye to. I strongly recommend taking the time to learn how generative AI is currently hurting creative people (and people in general) before using any of it. I'm posting this here because many people out there aren't aware of the damage this stuff is doing.

This is awesome! I do wonder as some of you are commenting. Would I need to go back to School and take BA or MA in my early 30s? I have a degree in Graphic Design, past years worked as Product Design, Designer in general. Would it be enough to up-skill through courser or better take full route and commit to University? I always loved Landscape design but for some reason were fearing of it, haha. With tech industry going bananas, I feel I want to connect to something diverse but stable enough.

Trynna pick between doing an arch degree at UofT or Landscape arch. I think I’m generally more interested in building arch but I’m growing interested in landscape. Also the landscape degree offers at the school I got accepted is enough to enter the workforce and wouldn’t need a master as opposed to the arch degree which requires a masters before working. On top of that many of the arch mastwrs programs at my country don’t require an arch undergrad, so I can still go into building arch with a landscape arch degree + have the security of finding a job in the meantime. However I think I’m more passionate about arch and I don’t wanna regret this decision so what do y’all think?

I am unclear as to why you would need a MArch before working. You can have a BArch or BS in Arch and still enter the workforce. I was in arch for many years (BS in Arch) before transitioning to landscape. Architecture degrees typically require more math/science, etc. than LArch degrees, which would make the transition to landscape easier later (it did for me). Go with what you are passionate about, though! I spent years wondering if I should switch to LArch and then when I finally decided to I had to essentially start over, which is a lot harder to do when you are decades into working. Also, as an architect, you can do a lot of the work a landscape architect does under the architect umbrella (as long as you do not call yourself a landscape architect, which implies licensure).

Have you met any landscape architects who got their start much later in life? I’m nearly 40 and considering a complete 180 from my current career in healthcare. Since I’ve been learning more about LA, I’ve become mildly obsessed. I would have to go back to school and start from square one and I don’t know if my brain has the ability to take it on. But I would love to know if any success stories out there.

I know 1 “quite famous” Japanese Architect who used to be a businessman then went back to school and started his architecture career at 33, now he above 60 closed to 70. He succeeded in his hometown Japan. So I think anyone can with lots of effort the sky is your limit.

Is there a place for entomologists in landscape architecture that isn’t incredibly niche? I studied entomology in undergrad and am interested in grad school. What does pursuing LA look like for gradschool with no previous experience?

Hey Carter, I am currently a high school teacher (not reflected in this OLD photo of me lmao)…I am currently working on a M.S. in agroforestry at Mizzou. However, I am interested in incorporating edible landscaping into native ecosystems in urban areas to increase community resilience to climate change. However, I am torn between finishing my current master’s, finishing the “grad certificate”, or transferring to a landscape architecture program entirely. My reasoning for transferring to a MLA program is exactly as you said it - using the current infrastructure to heal our ecosystems AND integrate food production for vulnerable communities. Currently, I design small scale “permaculture-esque” projects for friends and residential clients; however, I believe we need to make sweeping changes to larger spaces. Do you think I would have more “success” in the mainstream landscape architecture world, or would I benefit from finishing my current program and working toward larger clients as a landscape “designer”? I’d love to hear your thoughts! Cheers and thank you for creating AWESOME videos.

The top disadvantage is that they make you hand draw stuff for over 70 percent of the time. Just know how to do Civil 3D and illustrator. That’s all firms care about, and maybe Sketchup and Lumion.
