Good question. This is entirely subjective and up to each persons own judgement. I personally don't download from any sort of personal blog, random links on discussion boards, or any businesses I'm unfamiliar with. I will download from businesses that are well known to me or the general quilting community. If you're unsure about a source, that means they are not a "trusted source". Though in the future with more hands on knowledge and experience they may later become a trusted source. A good rule of thumb is: Don't download from anyone you wouldn't trust with your credit card information.

You're right about the show being the prize! I don't think it's likely that I'd be accepted because the acceptance rate is low, but I think it could be a great way to challenge myself and try new things. P.S. I think you might be the only one who caught the references!❤️

For straight line quilting, I’m rather a fan of using a line of masking tape for the first/master line in each direction (e.g. one line from top to bottom, or one line from top left to bottom right). Then sew along the length of the tape. Then pull off the tape. Then use the guide on my foot to sew each 3-or-whatever inches apart. Do the entire quilt in that direction. Then once complete in that direction, I place another initial line of tape in the opposite direction, sew along the tape, pull the tape, and use the guide on my foot to sew every 3 inches apart. Using masking tape for that one initial master line is cheap and easy and there is absolutely zero chance that I can have any sort of staining on the quilt top that chalk and pens and things can leave behind. I’m soooo paranoid that I will ruin 10 hours of piece work with some marking pen 😂

That is such a great option! Thanks for sharing. I've never used masking tape in that way, but now I'm going to add it to my "to do" list!

Question: Did you print the labels you are showing on an inkjet printer? I have never entered a quilt into any show or competition, but I have listened to KZbinrs who have offered bits of wisdom. 1. Don’t enter expecting to win; enter for the experience and what you can learn from it. Judges comments could tell you how to improve your quilts 2. Consider entering a non-juried show for the excitement of seeing your quilt hanging with others. 3. Maybe this should have been number 1 on my list. “Read the Rules.” There seem to be many rules, and they vary from show to show. For instance, learn the categories so that you don’t enter your quilt into the wrong one. Some shows will move your quilt to the correct category, and other shows will just exclude it from judging. Have you seen the KZbin channel TheCatBird Quilts? She entered a quilt into QuiltCon and had it accepted. I couldn’t find a playlist for the videos about her quilt, but I found the videos “On My Sewing Table” from October 2023 and “Quilt Stories.” I think she had other videos about the quilt too. Those videos may be helpful to you. Karen Brown of Just Get It Done Quilts interviewed Brandy Maslowski on a Karen’s Quilt Circle show called Let’s Talk About Quilt Judging a couple years ago. You might hear something on that to help you. Off Kilter Crafter Ian did a KZbin video called Tips, Tricks and Lessons for Entering Quilt Shows 8 months ago. He enters many shows - and wins. There are lots of videos about making hanging sleeves. Again, be sure to follow the quilt show’s sleeve guidelines. There are a number of ways that shows hang quilts and some may require larger sleeves than others. Hope these ideas help you.

Keep saying I will use up all I have before getting more but them I see prettier fabric and be a sucker for them and but them. Hehehe. I believe you will end up just throwing those in a box or you're going to be all day then it will be time for you to move.

Nice introduction to quilting a quilt. I often use the serpentine (wave) stitch instead of a straight line on my 9 mm width stitch machine. It camouflages times when I stray from a drawn line, and it works well in place of stitching in the ditch around quilt blocks. I have found that I favor diagonal grids over horizontal/vertical grids. Whenever the fabric color and pattern allows, I mark with a hera marker after I have made my quilt sandwich.
@ThimbleStorm
@ThimbleStorm Ай бұрын
I've seen Emily Dennis use the serpentine stitch for her quilting and I love it. The texture is amazing! I was disappointed to see that my machine has a wavy stitch but it looks nothing like the stitch that she uses. I prefer a diagonal grid too, but a horizontal grid is so beginner friendly.
@Carol_Sews
@Carol_Sews Ай бұрын
@ I have found that by manipulating the stitch width and length of my serpentine stitch, I can get many different looks with my Bernina 570 QE. On my Bernina aurora 440, I can manipulate the length, width, and balance of a multipurpose zigzag stitch to get a serpentine look. The 440 is only a 5 mm machine, so I can’t make the stitches as wide, but I rarely make the widest possible serpentine stitches on any project. The Bernina walking foot only allows for a 5.5 mm wide stitch, so to quilt a wider serpentine stitch, I must rely on the dual feed mechanism. That’s not an ideal situation, but using basting spray helps some.

I agree with others who encourage you to believe in yourself and give yourself credit. You're a *very* talented quilter, crafter, designer, teacher. I love watching how you teach and encourage others, from beginners to veteran quilters. And your voice is *so* warm and encouraging and approachable. I don't believe in "manifesting" things by speaking them, but I know we listen to ourselves when we tell ourselves that we're good enough. And sometimes be begin to believe the negative things we hear. Don't be your own worst critic. Remember - "Comparison Is the Thief of Joy"!

Nice test. I use gray for piecing unless all fabrics are cream or white. I have been quilting for 50+ years and once I found monofilament thread, that is all I use for quilting. I have the dark and clear and have never had any problems with breakage. You just can’t hold a hot iron to the quilt for a long period of time,not that you would ever do that.

I've been doing this for years. The best disappearing thread is 100wt Poly Wonderfil. Usually white or off white will do the trick since most background is light. DON'T OVER THINK IT - 100 wt. Wonderfil is the way to go when you don't want the threat to show

On this one, I'd use pale pink. Maybe it's my old eyes, but I see very little difference in the three on this top. With a quilt top of these colors if you want it to disappear, just use something one shade darker than the fabric that is the majority and the it will only disappear where it is on the fabric of that color.
@ThimbleStorm
@ThimbleStorm 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, the effect is very subtle. Disappointingly so. I was hoping for a bigger difference based on what I had read in the quilting discussion group. I agree a pink would work really well here, but I'm looking for one or two colors that I can use for everything because I'm lazy. I probably won't ever find that "perfect" color, but so far I'm enjoying the search!❤️

Uhm, the seam guide, is it just a piece of tape or does it have like a ledge? Where are you supposed to look while sewing, at the needle or your hands, or past the needle? How does the fabric stay together if you don’t backstitch? When you chain sew, how are you not attaching the first pair to the second pair, how did you get the space between?
@ThimbleStorm
@ThimbleStorm 2 ай бұрын
Seam Guide: The seam guide I use has a bit of a ledge (maybe around a 1/4 inch, not sure). If you're making your own seam guide from painters tape or masking tape I would recommend a similar height. I like that I can bump my fabric up to the ledge because I don't have to constantly monitor the edge of my fabric. Where to look: When I sew I don't just look at one place. If I sew and look only at the needle I get a little hypnotized and zone out. 😅 If I'm sewing directly on a line I'll look at the needle more often, but mostly my eyes are roaming around. I'm making sure the fabric is feeding correctly. I'm making sure my fabric is not becoming misaligned. I'm also making sure that my fabric is touching my seam guide. If I'm using pins or clips I'm making sure they don't get in the way and I don't sew over the pins. It sounds like a lot of things to pay attention to all at once, especially when you're a new quilter. That's why I suggest new quilters sew slowly until they get more comfortable with the process. Why no backstitch: When you sew two blocks together, finishing the raw edges, you're also securing your line of stitches. If you're more comfortable backstitching, go ahead. There are no right or wrong ways to sew. Backstitches might just come with some extra challenges down the line. Chain Sewing: When you chain sew you don't take your foot off the pedal until you've stitched passed the edge of the fabric, creating a little chain of stitches that go past the edge of the fabric. This will result in a pretty tight chain, not much of a gap between your pieces. If you want more of a gap you could lift your presser foot and pull your piece forward by hand, get your next piece ready, put the presser foot down, and continue sewing. I chain stitch both ways. ❤️ I hope this was helpful! Thanks for watching! ❤️

It will make a big difference whether or not you are making a quilt that will be washed and dried or not. I could see how the gray would blend in more if the quilt was washed and dried whereas a display quilt or wall hanging would still have the stitches on the surface of the quilt. So that may be why you don't see a big difference here in your test run.

For thread to “disappear” it needs to be slightly darker than the overall color of your quilt so that the quilting looks like a shadow when it sinks into the batting. An alternative is to match your background fabric. My favorite Aurifil 50 wt colors are 5004 Grey Smoke, 2340 Cafe au Lait, 2600 Dove, 2000 Sand, 2420 Fleshy Pink, 1147 Light Leaf Green, 2835 Medium Mint (great for Tula Pink), and 2805 Light Grey Turquoise (can appear grey, blue, or green depending on the fabric). I’d call the last four chameleon colors because they can take on the appearance of your fabric. As someone who almost always uses prints and not solids, I’d say audition diverse colors for quilting thread because you never know what will look great. I have a couple of chameleon Gutermann 50 wt cotton threads that I can’t get to for their numbers tonight. If you buy Gutermann and would like the numbers, let me know. On screen your quilting stitch looked a little short. I like to use 2.5 to 3.0 on my Bernina machine. I use the shorter 2.5 when I’m concerned that cat claws might catch in the threads. I enjoyed your video.
