Hi, I have a question about shrfu Mike Martello I was hoping you could help with. In his Zhan Zhuang stance training, did he sink low in his stance so that the knees went past his toes?

I study Wu Tang in the style of GM Liu Yun Quio / GM Tony Yang under Master James Rodgers. Thanks for posting the video, I’m showing my son, & step sons 7 hand, & them seeing someone else do it really helps. We may not be Kung Fu brothers, but definitely cousins. Thanks again for the post

Hi, Were you guys students of Mike Martello? I've been a big fan of Mike's martial arts since back in the early 2000s. If you are, I wanted to ask you about whether Mike trained a lot of Zhan Zhuang, or standing postures. Did he practice or teach low standing postures where the knees went past the toes? Thanks.
@JochenWolf

@@JochenWolf Thank you for replying. If you don't mind me asking How long would he hold the Zhan Zhunag postures for? And how low would he hold the Bashi positions for? Also, I saw in one of Mike's videos that he did pushups, but recommended not doing pushups at the beginning of training. Would he generally have you do pushups during the warmups before forms training, or after all the training was complete? Thanks

Before you ever study Chinese or Filipino martial arts....master the jab (both leads), master take down defense, master ground and pound. THEN after that begin jujitsu training...but you'll only need 1.5yrs of heavy training....get out before you develop heavy injuries ...never past purple belt, over-kill. At this point you can now beat all kung fu masters

Some people say that Tong Bei and Tai Ji come from the same ancestor. Since you do both styles, what do you think of that theory?
@JochenWolf
@JochenWolf 5 жыл бұрын
Didn't heard that saying at all. I know that Liu He Bafa and Tong Bei going back to the same mystical Ancestor though. Anyway: I think Taiji and Tong Bei compliment each other very good, but they have their own unique fighting strategies and approach.
@Rainbow_Oracle
@Rainbow_Oracle 11 ай бұрын
Taiji Quan come from Hongdong Tongbei Quan. It's not exactly like the modern more common Qi Style Tongbei Quan, but it is in that family of martial arts. Taijiquan is basically Tongbei Quan married to good old fashioned Chang Quan to give the loose, floppy power of Tongbei Quan a solid backbone, to give it structure, to give it leverage, and to make it less sloppy looking and more respectable and admirable to behold. Modern Taijiquan seems to take more from Chang Quan part of it's heritage, but the Tongbei Quan aspects are still there in the very basic loosehand warmups in both Chen and Yang styles, and you can see the Tongbei Quan genetics in Chen Village branch members, especially in the old videos, or if you can see them practiciing casually. It's very loose, and very explosively powerful. Problem is, nobody practices such simple basic exercises anymore. It's all focused on the form usually, and practicing the forms so precisely as to be in fault. The problem with modern Taijiquan is that it is too stilted, and too focused on very precisely controlling the opening and closing of the joints. There is no momentum which is the specialty of Tongbei Quan style practice. Not fighting the momentum. People focus too much on the evading aspect of Taijiquan, the rolling back and the emptying. I feel that should be something instinctual, almost accidental, and not focused on. Everybody naturally has the instinct to rear back a little. What people are not good at is being solid, controlling the opponent's structure, and penetrating into the opponent's space. Taijiquan is not a yield martial art. This is a misconception. Taijiquan is a balancing martial art. So long as one does not stuggle vainly for a dead angle, the balance can be forward, back, left, right, up, or down. The strategy is to not get physically stuck, and to not get mentally stuck. The point of the smooth opening and closing of the joints is to have maximum structural power in all your moves. And part of the hidden power of taijiquan is this 100% solid structure. Maybe the structure doesn't look like much, but if you press on it, you can't collapse it. If you lean on it, it holds you up. If you strike it, it's like punching a wall. The force can rebound in a very painful way. If the Taiji practitioner strikes you, it's like running into a wall, only instead of you meeting the wall, the wall meets you. This is the needle in the cotton. The hard iron core, of the "soft" cottony style. This last bit is the most mysterious part of the equation, and why the focus shifting from explosive, but sloppy power, to controlled and gradual power. You're not likely to serious hurt anyone like that, but you can become essentially unbeatable. Really Taijiquan is the combination of the solid powers, and the soft powers. I don't think anyone really practices both equally anymore. But that is what taijiquan, especially chen taijiquan, and the early yang style, are aiming to be. The first, more obviously so. the latter, more subtley.

@@Rainbow_Oracle Yes when I was doing Chen village style, I would do some Tong Bei exercises, and it would help my Shen Fa. But now I am doing the Practical Method of Hong Jun Sheng, and all the movements that were good in Chen village style are now bad habits in Practical Method. It is much tighter and structurally aligned. It is interesting that it is so different from other branches of Chen.
