i’ve been collecting vinyl since the late 1970s and my Discogs profile (RECORDGEEK) lists 12,767 titles with at least another thousand waiting to be listed.. I rarely ever buy new releases, but when I do, it's typically because to a good buddy who sells them at nearly cost from his record store. I like to finding records out in the wild or on Facebook Marketplace, Kiji, Thrift stores, etc. have I recently started doing record, fairs, and getting rid of doubles and stuff that I don’t really listen to.

Dick: I guess it looks as if you're reorganizing your records. What is this though? Chronological? Rob: No... Dick: Not alphabetical... Rob: Nope... Dick: What? Rob: Autobiographical. Dick: No fucking way. Rob: Yep. Let me tell ya how I got from Deep Purple to Howlin' Wolf in just 25 moods. And, if I want to find the song "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac, I have to remember that I bought it for someone in the Fall of 1983 pile - but, didn't give it to them for personal reasons. Dick: That sounds... Rob: Comforting. Dick: Yes. Rob: It is.

Here’s my contribution to Jazz Favs: pianist Denny Zeitlin, multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk, vibes player Johnny Lytle, saxophonist John Handy, vocalist Nina Simone, drummer Elvin Jones, trumpeter Clifford Brown, guitarist Mimi Fox, and a special spot for the beautiful Johnny Hodges.

Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert is maybe one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. First time I listened to it, it made me think of a soul's first minute in Heaven. Then I read the background story of the concert, how it could have been a complete disaster due to the condition of the piano and how tired Keith was. But he managed to improvise the entire show and did so amazingly.

I'm familiar with the story of the issues they had with that concert and its amazing how Keith Jarrett made a masterpiece of the situation anyway.

Hey Kenny…what a great review of Skydive! I completely agree with your assessment of the percussion instruments on Povo. They let Keith Jarrett loose for only a brief solo towards the end of the composition but for the most part keep him in the pocket as backdrop. I love that tune though and really that whole album. Thank you for reviewing it. Also, it’s been interesting to hear from your perspective the limited sound quality on these CTI recordings. I don’t have a mid fi or hi fi system so have been unsure. I need an upgraded phonograph. I’ll look at some of your recommendations. Diggin your channel. 👍

Out of these 3 albums, the (Captain Marvel) and the (Max Survivors) album appealed to me the most. It was probably because I prefer, a more faster approach to playing instruments when it comes to jazz music? That's not with every jazz album. The playing can be suttle as long as it takes me somewhere. Actually, the (Survivors) album kind of reminded me of Akira Ishikawa (Count Buffaloes Drums) album a little.

i am very intersested by the freddie hubbard you showed. the cast is awesome ! thank you kenny ! i heard the max roach album you showed couple days ago. i enjoyed the performance a lot ! he was a total genius on drums ! the problem is that when i listen to a record and i'ts too technical, i have mixed feelings ! when i listen to music (with instruments or not) i want to be touched emotionally so it was a good album, good listening experience but not great regarding my taste.😅 thank you very much kenny ! peace and love my friend 🙏

Freddie Hubbard's 🎺 recordings on CTI (Red Clay, Straight Life, First Light) and 🎺 Donald Byrd's early 70s Blue Note albums (Ethiopian Knights, Kofi, Black Byrd) were being to suppress 🎺Miles' output of the era. With regard to the Laws family, it has been nice discovering Ronnie Laws in one of the early incarnations of Earth Wind and Fire with Maurice White (former drummer of Ramsey Lewis Trio), in addition to his early albums.

I couldn't remember if I own the Freddie Hubbard Sky Dive album so I googled it. I came across an old Jazz Journal review that practically ripped the album to shreds. However, the song Povo rang a bell with me and I remembered where I knew it from - the album "Spark!" by the group Soulive with Karl Denson on sax. I absolutely love that version so you might want to check it out on youtube.

Funny, I'd never consider Bright-Sized Life under-rated. It was Metheny's break out album and catapulted him to resounding notoriety. On another note, James Beard's Song of the Sun is highly under-rated and something worth a Chek, too.

Captain Marvel is great, and it's also wonderful that they filmed the incarnation of the bands material at the Montreux Jazz festival in 1972. Hey Kenny…Thank you for sharing changing events in your life and your feelings on music’s role. I agree with your take in that I feel music transports us back to those most influential and meaningful times in our lives and thus certain songs or albums become the soundtracks to our lives and the remembrance of those times. For me, the 1969 album “Love can make you Happy” by Mercy reminds me of growing up in late 60’s Los Angeles with my Mom and all her hippie friends. 1978’s “All n All” album by EWF introduced me to soul, Jazz and gospel at the influential age of 13. And last I’d have to say Roxy Music’s “Avalon” album and The Style Council’s album “My Ever changing Moods” were the two my wife and my (coming up on 30 years married) enjoyed most together. Great topic Kenny. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. Really enjoying your channel. 🙏

Love that era of Stanley Turrentine on CTI, he was always Soulful and Funky going back to those Blue Note recordings. Storm is one of my CTI favs. Musicians like Stanley Turrentine represent the link between Jazz and Funk (R&B). From this style of playing, you get the Maceo Parkers (James Brown/The JBs).

Kenny, two albums I would add for this discussion. First is The Last Concert by The Modern Jazz Quartet, an amazing group that created a "classical chamber music" approach to jazz with a great group of musicians led by Milt Jackson. The second is Freddie Hubbard's First Light album with CTI. I think Freddie was under appreciated for being such a marvelous trumpeter, and this album has a stellar collection of musicians, too. His Red Clay album on CTI was excellent as well, but I liked First Light more. You can listen to that one all day!

So, what is the "underrated" coming from?

Thank you very much for your kind comments. In the video I showed a series of albums that are NOT UNDERRATED....then I mentioned that Mwandishi is underrated. Sometimes I forget what I have in my LP collection, but "Captain Marvel" did get a lot of spin time on my turntable in the 70's...Had no idea Stanley Turrentine, and Shirley Scott were married.( Goes to show you learn something new everyday)...I would've thought she'd be married to Eddie"Lockjaw" Davis for all the collaborations they did together...Please do a video on great Sax, and Hammond B3 Organ combinations..It doesn't get any more Soulful, Bluesy ,and Jazzier than those 2 instruments in perfect harmony.

Well when it comes to favorite youtube channels I really go by the videos as being favorites rather than the channel itself. Rick Beato is definitely a go too for having a diverse number of topics & guest. His topics also trancend his channel & causes respoders to also get in on what they agree with him on & not agree with him on. Here's a couple of those responses & channels for you to checkout. Licks of the Beast video (Is music getting worse? What everyone gets Wrong) Songwriter Theory video (Responing to Rick Beato) Oh before I forget here's a channel & video that I think you will enjoy? Michael Noland video (Why today's music Sucks). He reviews albums here and there and also has 60's 70's and 80's music guests on the show as well. Enjoy.👍
