Brother Kenny, my best jazz finding in 2024 is the 1964 Dexter Gordon LP, One Flight Up. The spacing on the LP is unbelievable. The feature composition Tanya written by Donald Byrd. When I listen to it I can hear all the instruments separately and playing together at the same time. Dex on sax, Donald Byrd trumpet, Kenny Drew piano, Niehl Orsted on bass and Art Taylor on drums. Art Taylor have them drums talking and popping. It's truly a classic........👁🎷🎺🎹🎻🎶

Kenny, I wanted to thank you, your enthusiasm and positive energy is infectious. Your videos are uplifting. This is especially important right now as many of us are feeling despair over current events. Thanks for your positive energy, and of course your insights about the music, which I always enjoy. Warmest wishes, Ron from Kenosha WI

There's a whole raft of exciting young jazz musicians in the UK you need to check out. Some suggestions are Yussef Dayes, Nubya Garcia, Ashley Henry and Sultan Stevenson. There are loads more.

Brother Kenny, this is why I listen to your great advice and recommendations! I picked up that Sahib Shihab record a couple months back and it's fantabulous! That is so neat that you picked this album as your top Jazz Performance in 2024! A Masterpiece, like you said! Is Impex putting out some amazing pieces of artistic and musical excellence, or what? Simply put, Abby Fonn and Chris Bellman, etc.etc, are working some serious magic! Peace and love to you!

Interesting choices. Thanks for sharing. Of my purchases in 2024, my subjective choices are: Best sounding: VA - Jazz At The Pawnshop (AudioNautes) Best performance: Murray/Angry/Questlove - Plumb (JMI) Best performance & sounding: Jerome Sabbagh - Heart (Analog Tone Factory) Disappointment: Getz Gilberto (Impex 1Step) vs Getz Gilberto (AP 45); listened to in extensive shoot-outs on high-enders and therefore not purchased Support more the living highly talented artists and smaller passionate high quality new release labels!

So far, I've been able to check out a couple of the releases that you recommend. Sahid Shihab and The Danish Radio Jazz Group is pretty striking stuff. I'm not sure if I've heard anything like it before, like Ellington meets Out To Lunch! I'm going to look for more work from Shihab, and the Jazz Group. I also enjoyed Patricia Barber's Companion. I've enjoyed her solo work on piano, and she sounds fantastic with a live band on Companion. Thanks very much for your suggestions and discussions!

Hard to argue about the sound quality of the shown albums but the best performance of the year? None of the shown albums have been performed even in this century, they only have been preserved and re-released. For performance, you should pick albums where the art was actually created in the said year.

For a new jazz recording released in 2024, check out the Bill Charlap Trio “And Then Again” on Blue Note. Recorded live at the Village Vanguard with great music and sound.

Out of all your purchased recommendations, I took the time to listen to the Duke Ellington Indigos album. I think it's a good sounding album for the time period it came out. I could see it somehow being (music for made for films), which interestingly enough was an album I just recommended by Brain Eno if you saw the comment yesterday?

The Gloria Coleman album was recorded in 1963 by Rudy van Gelder. Perhaps it's the mastering by Kevin Reeves or the production by Bob Thiele or Rudy was having an off day ? I know Rudy's engineering from 1963 onwards was much "drier" than his more reverberant work prior to this.
@josefjankus5076Ай бұрын
Hello Kenny what makes Rudy Van Gelder recordings sound so good compared to other producers?
@kennysaudiophilerecordreviewsАй бұрын
I'm not sure but it may have been the venue that he was using while making those recordings of those awsome jazz legends...great question 😊

My worst one was Don Cherry art Deco which was also part of the verve by request series I'm pretty sure or at least was done by third Man, I think on top of their terrible mastering they tried to squeeze way too many minutes on the grooves and I had to turn my stereo all the way up just to even see if there was actually music on the record

Jacob Wendt - Silver Street is excellent in sound and performance and is NEW for 2024 - not a reissue 😊
@LarryHoytАй бұрын
Spot on with 'Silver Street' from Jacob Wendt! Picked up the lp and the Promo CD as he has been making the rounds all throughout SoCal record shops, shows, and Fairs. This new jazz drummer and band are top notch!!
@chelillingworth9466Ай бұрын
Some of those third-man pressings are just horrific, I really don't understand the verve by request, if they happen to be mastered by Ryan k Smith then they have a chance of being really good as long as the pressing isn't a disaster, but if they are mastered by third man they seem to be completely awful
@jorgegera9042Ай бұрын
Worst Sounding record of 2024 is John Scofield's A go go by Verve. Period!

The Verve by Request Series is awful. They all sound awful to me. Garbage. I will never buy another Verve by Request album ever again.
