But happily most droners do use their brains and fly in a safe or very low risk manner.
@eddu4361

The heart of the matter is that there are people out there that have fewer working brain cells in their head than the number of motors on there drones. No technology can cover for this.

Since the government wasn’t interested in geofencing. They wanted remoteID so they got it. 100% the government’s fault. Maybe they should have worked with DJI instead of threatening them?

Yes cover the top half of the cdi and then cover the bottom quadrant that doesn’t have the needle showing, and then fly a heading somewhere in the direction of the remaining quadrant to bring you closer and in the direction of the VOR

What’s Basic Med?
@FalconImagery
@FalconImagery 7 күн бұрын
Its for pilots that want to fly but have had a health issue that prevented, or prevents them from getting a regular class 1, 2 or 3 medical. In many cases they can still fly with very minor risks. So the FAA approved a BasicMed program that allows them to fly under certain rules and limitations. The video explains all of this and more.

Paul Larochelle, Jason Levitt, and the team do a great job. Paul tried to retire, but he's out there again this year, even if Jason is the official operator now. Paul is just better on camera. Someone had a wing strike on landing, but they appear to have gotten away with it. I think there were 164 aircraft on Saturday, from the report I saw. Pretty spectacular. Thanks for a great record of this runway. We are lucky cameras are good enough to record this for posterity. It used to be every year and now it's about every other year and is open for a shorter time.

Thanks for sharing; very cool video. I was just reading through reddit/flying and saw the notice that they had opened the field. NOTAM's to takeoff and land RW1 only. Thinking about giving it a go in my DA40. Is the surface smooth enough for wheel pants? What is traction like? I have put the plane down on some 1800ft asphalt runways, but how much does the landing rollout distance change?
@FalconImagery
@FalconImagery 12 күн бұрын
Yes it is smooth enough for wheel pants. The surface is hard, and it has just the right amount of packed snow on the ice so there is a little traction. I never use brakes to slow down once I touch down. I simply let the plane roll out until it pretty much comes to a stop. Also taxiing can be a challenge. You will need to add enough power to get some rudder authority, but not so much that you taxi too far forward before you want to make your turn
@FalconImagery
@FalconImagery 12 күн бұрын
The landing roll out isn’t bad. Probably about the same as a paved runway. The only issue is if there is any significant crosswind you could drift in the ice to the downwind side. So I would suggest going there when the winds are light or the winds are coming out of the north

Curious why you chose wheel low vs 3 point? Am head up there next week but it’ll be my first landing on ice so I’m evaluating landing options.
@FalconImagery
@FalconImagery 13 күн бұрын
With a 3 point you can sometimes drop in a bit hard, and I wanted to protect my tailwheel on the bumpy hard ice. Also, if you may have noticed it was a bit bumpy in the air with the winds coming out of the west. We were landing to the North, so a Wheeled Landing is preferred in a crosswind landing. I just kept a little power in to allow me to fly slow on the Wheeled landing.
@kathrynslye471

Ahh I hadn’t thought of how the rough bumpy ice might pinch the tailwheel tube! Good technique and advice! I’ll probably use the same one.

@@FalconImagery Wow! What small world. :) Can I ask you a question? I've had different answers to this. I'm trying to find out if I have to get current on my own in some flight school, or can I get current at CAP and start flying practice search and rescue flights?
@FalconImagery
@FalconImagery 10 күн бұрын
CAP will pay for a couple of flights to help you get ready to take the Form 5 for the Mission Transport Pilot spot. Then they will pay for your flights to get you to Mission Pilot status. If you are struggling after a couple of flights for the mission transport pilot position then you can pay for the flights on your own dime. The rental rates for the CAP planes are less than any flight school and the CAP CFI can’t charge you for any of the flight training. However that CAP CFI has often other things to do then do a lot of free flight training, unless they are retired
@FalconImagery
@FalconImagery 10 күн бұрын
So it really depends how rusty you are. Sometimes I get cap pilots that flew a plane last many years ago and they are rough. Or they are young and only have a 100 hours in a Skyhawk or archer. These pilots usually need a few flights before they are ready for a Form 5 checkride
@FalconImagery
@FalconImagery 10 күн бұрын
Lastly, when you have the form 5 just ask the CFI conducting it to have it bee your annual flight review that will work for the FAA and your currency

I hope FAA ramps up enforcement quick, and makes it public. Otherwise, their only option will be to tighten regulations. Eventually, this will hurt us who make a living flying drones. My hope is they will simply require 107 for everyone who fly any drone.
@FalconImagery
@FalconImagery 19 күн бұрын
The FAA has the TRUST program for recreational drone fliers, however, I agree I think everyone needs to take a Part 107 course and then pass the FAA Part 107 knowledge exam before they can fly a drone. The skies are rapidly getting more complicated with increased drone sales and manned aircraft travel, and to have people flying drones without any knowledge of the National Air Space, and the procedures for obtaining ATC permission to fly a drone in controlled airspace, is a recipe for multiple disasters.
@DonnieCulver-d8w
@DonnieCulver-d8w 19 күн бұрын
A short multiple-choice quiz that is correctable to 100% is not going to be enough now. Hopefully, 107 requirements will come in to play before tightening airspace.

How about requiring DJI to set up a tracking server on US soil to track all its drones' locations? Their drones report their locations every few seconds, and pilots already use iPhones/Androids to view their drone's flying perspective (FPV). This might cut a few dollars off their profit per drone, but it would not be a big cut to the expensive Matrices.
@FalconImagery
@FalconImagery 20 күн бұрын
They had something called aeroscope that they sold to companies and government facilities to purchase to be able to monitor all DJI drones within a certain radius. Regardless if they had remote id working or not. And then suddenly in 2023 they took it off the market

Did pilots always talk to themselves or is it a KZbin thing? I soloed over 30 years ago and don’t remember talking to myself but then I didn’t have a camera either. Really well done! Impressive solo. I’m guessing you have your private pilot license in hand by now.

That’s disturbing. Pretending that mostly unlicensed anonymous drone operators will do the “right thing” is disingenuous at best. I wonder aircraft insurance is going to add an “uninsured drone operator” premium.

Now, consider this. People that fly drones get into problems. Get sued for all of their possessions after flying into a baby carriage. The US legal system has received tens of millions of dollars as a result of these drones. They therefore do a fantastic job of keeping the money flowing. To keep attorneys' BMW payments up to date.

I'm wondering if this change is coming from a litigation standpoint: with geofencing, the pilot who flies over an airport can say "hey, the software should have stopped me from flying there", e.g. play dumb. Now, the decision to fly anywhere rests solely on the pilot. I'm not sure if I'm explaining my reasoning well (not a layer), but my thinking is analogous to the "beware of dog" paradox, where the owner of a dog that bites someone may be more at risk if he has a 'beware of dog' sign (because the sign demonstrates that the owner is aware that the dog will bite).
