Patti is God. She has been my idol since I was 9 years old and my mother took me to see "Evita." Even though I didn't understand everything that was going on, I loved watching her up on stage.

I always saw this song as a woman shouting out against the severe ageism women face. She’s considered “useless” because she is “old.” Her life ended when she became a mom, so her energy and ambition got channeled through her kids since it was “game over” for her. This was her realizing that her ambition could have been used for herself instead of for people that didn’t want it. This is her fuck it. The rest of her life is finally going to be for her. Who cares what anyone else says.

God bless and RIP the person who filmed this. Amazing, and worth giving their life for filming Patti in this singular performance. You and your cell phone will be remembered fondly.

I can’t imagine that it’s easy to match Madame Lupone in a scene, much less a screaming match, but Benanti does it admirably. And with proper support!

I find Angela Lansbury, Parti lupone , and Imelda Staunton the best roses in my opinion and Bette is pretty good as well as rose even though the movie wasn’t the best but still better than the Rosalind Russell one

For my nickel, musical theater's most underrated number simply because it is performed by such a minor character in a masterpiece with so many jewels for the stars. This number does allow Louise one of her most touching moments in the show. I love Laura Benanti but I still feel she sang this role too well. If Louise had that much actual talent, I think that makes Rose more unlikeable and almost cruel.

The lyric change is awful. "You're so nice. You're not good, you're not bad, you're just nice" is one of the best lines in musical theatre and encapsulates the witche's character and place in the story. Ugh.

I love Patti’s use of vowels when singing. I love Bette, but I ALWAYS hated how she ends the song. I don’t like an extended note with an ‘e’ vowel sound. It kinda because nasal and doesn’t sound as angry. Patti ending it with a “a” vowel, like “for may”, really builds well and leads into the rage at the end. Plus it sounds more pleasant, which is important in a song where aspects will not be “perfect”. That’s just my opinion.

Donna is a conundrum. I am a lifetime theater fan. I marveled over Donna's performance in "Passion," but her voice in virtually everything else has been flat (under pitch) and inconsistent. She has had vocal issues and illness, I understand. I have tried to like her in many other things, and I did see her in this live 2x (Woods). She was funny and at times touching, but her voice, even compared to the inconsistent and flawed voice of Peters, was just atrocious (Peters at least full belts and isn't flat). I know this is harsh, but when paying top dollar and expecting great performances, that's my take. Can I do better? No. And nobody else can either save but a few acting belters who perform. We are all just theater goers. But we can expect more.

i adore this woman. so. much. a few things about this production were not my favorite *cough, Denis O'Hare* and the direction is not like, the best, but i do appreciate that they took risks conceptually and i find a lot of it very beautiful. but geez, that lyric change is rough, man. glad they returned to the original. donna murphy somehow manages to take all the like intensely weirdly theatrical bullshit that i really enjoy but like let's be real is often not super polished about this type of theatre making and not only pulls it off but elevates the whole concept. like, lots of ideas, lots of directorial Conceits and whatnot, and then just boom, THEATRE in a few moments. it's kinda bogged down by all the reimaginings though and doesn't quite get off the ground from what else i have seen of it on youtube tbh. also sorry to rip into Denis O'Hare here as if yet another person needed to do that in this comments section but i am still bitter about him performatively telling me to quit acting once during a talkback after watching him perform at my college. sry lol really bringing in my personal vendettas but it was just weirdly discouraging after i had seen him turn in this incredible performance and i was just like, disappointed that this actor i so looked up to went out of his way to be casually discouraging. like i get it i was an asshole theatre teenager and he's an Artist who likes to be spiky and real or whatever but it kinda made me feel like shit. never meet your heroes i guess. i still think he's a good actor despite that kinda douchey response and his dreadful performance here lmao but who among us hasn't been woefully bad in a show at least once or twice looking back?

Thank you for posting! I saw Tony Yazbeck in On the Town, where he was terrific as well -- and where he danced the big pas de deux in Act II beautifully! (Is he the first Gabey not to use a dance "double"?) Btw, the title of the song is : "All I Need is THE Girl."

By FAR the most realistic and honest portrayal of a woman whose been driven to the edge. Combined with the fact that she also has the strongest voice to ever take on the role and yet sacrificed brilliant vocals which she is perfectly capable of bringing to the part she took the more honest approach and brought a real person up on to that stage. Absolutely brilliant. She utterly OWNED the role and owned that stage. The best in my opinion.
