If you love theatre, you have to admit that both LuPone and Paige shred the shit out of this number!!!!! LuPone/Paige.... You don't need to choose...

Paige slays anything she does. No debate about it.

Elaine does SOOO much more with this song regarding interpretation, but I think I still prefer Patti's with its raw, wild, joyful energy. In comparison to that, this seems almost studied - which is actually a compliment. And yes, she IS a smart singer, not just because she co-produced it, but because of the vocal choices she makes. She only hits one E-flat to Patti's three, but it's solid and perfectly placed. The two-octave scale she does on the last "blow" is fantastic, and is something Patti

Patti LuPone sings in such a way that the lyrics are usually unintelligible. "Forbidden Broadway" hilariously spoofed it decades ago. Paige sings better.

Saw this cast in London way back when - awesome show. The guy dancing in front of her at 2.15 is John Barrowman (his first West End Show)

I saw Elaine Paige in the West End many times in the 1980s. In a decade in which she had one triumph after another, this number was an unexpected knock 'em dead showstopper - unexpected because we'd come to know her as the introducer of new London musicals and here she was producing and starring in a US revival. The stage production was more elaborate than this and introduced us to a new star in John Barrowman. So great to see it again.

Elaine Paige is a really talented and extremely smart singer. Patti sang that song in 1987, Elaine Page sang that song in 1989. She was aware of Patti's work and she was able to take it more steps further. PLUS in 1989 she co-produced Anything Goes, so that there was no chance of Patti singing this same play! I will not say that she was sly, but for sure she was amazingly smart!

Out of a couple popular revival phases, LuPone, Paige, and Foster are my all time favorites. In that order!

Christ, her voice gives me shivers. Now that is talent, pure and simple. I came here for Mr. Perfect though....Barrowman! *shakes fist* XD

while LuPone may technically have Elaine beat in the pipes department, NO ONE can slay this song like Elaine…not Patti, not Sutton, not even Ethel Merman.

@Nightmare5F I prefer Elaine's voice..more substance to it. She's still singing..on Broadway in Follies right now. She sings "I'm Still Here" and she is!!!

This is really nice but no one can beat Patti vocally in my opinion!!

+Zero Hiro: ms paige handles herself and the material capably…a good job considering the others who have covered it. divas come and go, but ms lupone is a once-in-a-generation artist who makes me proud of my north shore heritage.

I agree... Elaine tends to drag out notes, that’s kind of her vocal uniqueness. But it doesn’t really fit the music style right here... the score is written I a way to ahem clear cut, distinct rhythms

She just sung the shit outta that number!

Elaine Stritch sure belted out Blow, Blow. She was really good. That song is one of my favorites from my childhood when my mother used to play her Cole Porter records for me. (about 55-60 years ago). I love Cole all of Porter's songs. I prefer Patti Lupone's fast-paced vocal which I feel has a raw, passionate edge to her fast lyrics. Both are excellent, I like Patti's performance better.

Fantastic voice. She sounds like a horn herself!😊

(cont'd) might not be able to do. Plus I love the angles of her arms whenever she throws them up and poses in the middle. haha
@hojojiczek12 жыл бұрын
Does she sing it in the same key like Sutton does? Because it sounds so much "easier to sing" than when Sutton sings it.
@pudgeuncle13 жыл бұрын
She looks like Blanche Deveraux (RIP Rue McClanahan).
@rocketdawg1912 жыл бұрын
It sounds like a higher key in this version and it's a bit faster than the 2011 arrangement
@Juliaflo11 жыл бұрын
Let's not forget Ethel Agnes Zimmerman--I think she sang it first.
@robsieger18864 жыл бұрын
She did. (Zimmermann, btw.) The Merman was a force of nature like no other.

...I presume this was a transfer to London of a U.S. revival of it with Patti LuPone ~ and as I said under a video clip from THAT - I'll ask: I believe this show takes place above a cruise ship. Not a military one. So, why then are the chorus boy sailors wearing what look like standard-issue U.S. Navy uniforms, not different ones? I know, I know ~ It's a musical!!!!!!!!!!!:-@

Am I the only one thinks she sound kind of like Barbra Streisand? Just to be clear, that is a huge compliment.
@pete493279 жыл бұрын
FACT: The BEST BY FAR Reno is Sutton Foster, because of one BIG reason. She can dance as well as she can sing. LuPone and Paige next in line because they can dance pretty good, but Foster's dancing is good enough that she could have a career as a dancer only. Best voice overall imo is Lupone, with Paige and Foster tied. They are all great performers, world class, but Foster wins out in a tight race because of combined dancing/singing talent.
@hollywoodboysa8 жыл бұрын
+pete49327 Well........ Rachel York took it over after Sutton and she actually could dance and sing and in my opinion sings more along the lines of the typical Reno. So for that reason Sutton doesn't even chart on my Reno's. I am going to withhold my opinion on Patti Lapone but I am just going to say that Elaine Page is probably the best vocally of the Broadway gals.
@broadwayFan288 жыл бұрын
+pete49327 Ms Foster does it all well. More than the singer/dancer of Reno, I think the rendition with Sutton has the best orchestration. That really helps Sutton. Do we really look for a true singer in this role? I think that twang is part of Reno and bravo to the women who portray that character. So I guess from the point of Reno, I like them all, all the way back to Merman for respecting "Reno's character" if that makes any sense.
@isaacbrown15948 жыл бұрын
Respectfully Disagree, the only reason is I think Reno Sweeney needs to be a bit older, the best Reno I have EVER seen was Caroline o'Connor in the National Australian Cast, she won the Helpmann, I agree that she is the best "triple threat out of LuPone and Paige but maybe not the best character choice.
@daviddye65588 жыл бұрын
Sutton is easily the weakest Reno, vocally, of all 3. She plays it camp, speak sings, sings in her throat and nose, and belts thin. It does not work with the robustness of the Reno character in my opinion.

LuPone had better diction?? LOL. Usually when LuPone sings I cannot make out the words.
