Ya it’s pretty neat just gotta have a pretty good operator if you over edge your boards can never get it back it’s tough to get the hang of it. If I had a set of lasers it would speed up my job. But we get by without lasers just from experience better to leave on too much bark. And re edge at a later time if needed We send all sawyers trimsaw operators and edger operators to a 3 day NHLA grading course. It really makes a huge different I suggested it to some other KZbin channels. Theta told me it wouldn’t help there operation which I think in foolish. I don’t know how it can couldn’t help

@TheWildWestMill I worked at an old diesel mill in my younger days. The saw shaft has some play in it and the blade would move out away from the table just a bit, bad thrust bearings. A slab fell down and wedged against the table, caught the blade, and kicked back at our sawyer. Hit hill right above the eyebrows and literally folded his skull back about 3 inches. Knocked him over the skid beam behind him. He lived, and actually came back to work 4 months later, but he was never the same. So I treat bigger mill saws with a lot of respect.

I will get the hang of it. I usually pick things up pretty quick they want up to 6x10s in the bundles and both ends need to be trimmed with the way our trims saws are one guy does the trimming so once one end is trimmed gotta pull it across to trim other end and it’s just way to heavy we just aren’t really set up for that so splitting most of them is the only way. Or pick them up with the forklift. We will get it done no matter what. We always do. The price is completely terrible 65 cents a board ft there’s 1150 bdft in a bundle The Precuts from the gsngsaw are the money maker for us

So! If I recall correctly, you had said that box elder loses it's orange color when dry...Supposing you take the boards to the planer, dress four sides, (spray,brush, or roll) a clear Polly on the boards as a sealer, and then air dry the lumber.... What are the chances of the color remaining? Is that an experiment you would be willing to try? If it would work, you may be able to sell it as a premium board......Dan

But way too much 2 and 3 common was coming down the line it’s difficult for a grade sawyer to all of a sudden stop sawing grade and saw cants but they could be f been getting huge over run. Suppose to have been cutting 6x random and 4x6. And 3.5x6. All for an order at the pallet mill to be cut into 7/8x6 with a brewer Gangsaw. Thanks for showing some of details on the mill, I was going to ask you how many horsepower your sawing with but you answered before I could ask lol. Interesting to see those no slip cog drive belts being driven by electric motors, I'm sure it makes for a pretty strong saw head compared to diesel engine driven saws that I'm used to.
@TheWildWestMill
@TheWildWestMill 4 күн бұрын
You see other mills run multiple belts but if you have 6 belts on there there not all tensioned the same I’m sure of it. So it’s possible out of 6 belts only one or 2 is really driving that saw. Especially with a top saw You want that thing to cut properly These belts are a little more expensive but we have no issues with them. They do break from time to time but it’s cuz the cogs tear off but that rarely happens on the headsaw. It happens on the edger mostly it has less power but still turning 3. 22” sawblades. And if I’m cutting 4” deep with all 3 blades it’s pretty tough on it
@StuInTheSticks
@StuInTheSticks 4 күн бұрын
@@TheWildWestMill I know all to well about v belts not all being even in length our little mill used 5 "c" size belts on the head saw. When we would order a new set regardless of brand there would be one sometimes two belts a hair to long so three belts would be doing most of the work. When that happened they would get smoked pretty quick you would slowly lose pully traction in a heavy cut very maddening when you were going good, we still got decent service life from a set but nothing compared to what you guys are using.
@TheWildWestMill
@TheWildWestMill 4 күн бұрын
@@StuInTheSticks I think that’s what happens when you see guys that have a top saw when the top one runs into the log and leaves a line. I have a buddy with a top saw and he cuts high dollar hardwood everyday and both his saws cut perfect in line with each other
@StuInTheSticks
@StuInTheSticks 4 күн бұрын
@@TheWildWestMill Maintaining fairly steady rpm's is how you saw straight lumber saw's are tensioned or "hammered" to work at whatever rpm range a mill is setup to run at but when that's constantly changing ie slowing down in the cut it will make the saw drift, hence uneven lumber thickness; there are many other factor's as well that come into play for sure. Around my area guy's ran mill's with underpowered power unit's trying to push through the cut to fast so a lot of bad low grade off dimensioned lumber was produced, well that and some of them didn't know how to sharpen properly lol.
@TheWildWestMill
@TheWildWestMill 4 күн бұрын
Yes sir our saws are hammered for 550 rpm’s. We were having problems with how it was being sharpened a few years back but we were using an andrus grinder and myself and the other sawyer would sharpen slightly different with that grinder so we bought a jockey grinder and it’s been much better. I notice if you watch helmsburg sawmill his top saw leaves a pretty healthy ridge sometimes when he’s cutting But like you said it’s probably underpowered and I notice he uses multiple belts to drive the saws I know years ago. We got a cheap saw trying to save some money. And that saw was just complete crap I have a winter blade that the steel one s thicker than the regular saws we use and the sawbits the kerf is much wider I’ve never gotten to use it. I was told only if it stays -15 for multiple weeks. But in 5 years I’ve just never needed it I ran out of good saws one summer they all needed some work. I tried using that winter blade lol but just could not get it to cut well

Thanks man. Ya I’m also the lead hand and have been training to become supervisor. But can’t really become supervisor until I have someone that can run the saw and keep production at what it is or better .. it’s very hard to take a Grade sawyer and put him in a pallet mill tell him to forget everything he’s learned and saw cants lol I learned to saw cants before I learned how to grade saw I won’t take a grade board if it will effect the outcome of getting 2 or maybe 3 cants It’s a much different type of sawing most guys would see a clean face with no defects and take a board but right from the beginning I was trained not too

We work right up to noon on the 24th and back to work on January 2nd. But we have 3 days of maintenance the 27th 30th and 31st. Ya I agree man when sawing that’s all you got to worry about is making the saw run. I’m also the lead hand and have been in training to become the supervisor. But there needs to be someone to take over sawing and we just can’t seem to find that person as of yet which is fine for me I enjoy it. And the grader is my backup he takes over for an hour here and there so I can stretch my legs or if there’s somthing I need to take care of I gotta try to stockpile a few videos for when we aren’t working I still have a few days lol Thanks for the support John. We aren’t working I trying to finish up our American orders incase we have these big tariffs from trump. Then we have some really big local orders to complete

I noticed the barn cleaner a few days ago and was surprised at how slow it goes. I assume it keeps up with the head saw but it sure doesn't look like it would.

It keeps up with the headsaw and gangsaw. But if we are notching too it’s gets a little over full but stays going The problem is when the sawdust gets out to the small. Vibrator. The holes get plugged up then will not fall into the auger to go up into the big bin. So the over run of sawdust goes out to a smaller bin that we dump with the loader but we make around 100 yards of sawdust everyday

I was swamping my guy piling the 8x8s today. We aren’t really set up to move them around that fresh aspen is so heavy but we got a fairly good system it’s the best we can come up with because they need to be chainsawed I was getting an 8x8 every 90 seconds or less

What do you do with 8x8 Aspen, log homes or something?

They are sold for legging They stand up 2 i beams that have s channel 8 1/4. The i beams are 10ft apart. The 8x8s sit in the channel they stack them on top of each other then back fill against them somthing for construction. Then they get buried never to be seen again We use aspen balm Cottonwood. Red pine spruce white pine We do 3” 4” X random. Then 6x6. And 8x8. All for legging. Just different size i beams And they are sold for good money considering they bury them Afterwards
