5:50 why wouldn't this be a B minor chord since b-d-f# defines that chord is that not so? if you played that b note on the 4th fret of the G string, that would be, i think, clearly be a B minor chord so I'm confused!
@PetersAcousticMusicChannelКүн бұрын
Hi - and thanks for providing the 'timestamp', which really helps. We are into the realm of ambiguous chords here, which I really like. The third string is open, so relative to the capo that string is playing a G natural. The other notes are indeed b, d and f#. G doesn't belong in the Bm triad, but since G is the sixth note up from B, one possible name for this chord may be Bm6 (others will correct me if I'm wrong😊) . Or on the other hand, since f# is the major seventh of G, but G is not in the lowest note being played (B is), you could call this chord an inverted Gmaj7 (Gmaj7 / B). But in the end, to quote another famous Bard, it's probably just a case of 'A rose by any other name...' Hope that helps, and thanks for the feedback.

Nice job! There's another Dylan's song a bit ignored: "Restless Farewell" in the CBC 1964 version. It's a song he actually performed live only two times: during that television broadcast and, in the same year, during the Royal Festival Hall concert. I have to mention the live versions because the studio one is a bit too "freely-played". The Canadian TV version seemed to be the most interesting
@PetersAcousticMusicChannel3 күн бұрын
Thank you. Yes, I like 'Restless Farewell' (although I like most of Bob Dylan's stuff!). The tune is taken from the traditional song, "The Parting Glass". I found a live version from 1995, which I quite like: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6HXqKSghqd9n9k

Can you tell me about the guitar you are playing?
@PetersAcousticMusicChannel7 күн бұрын
Hi. The guitar is a Bourgeois Vintage / HS Heirloom Series OM, with an aged tone Adirondack Spruce top and Indian Rosewood back and sides, made in 2021. It's especially good for this style of fingerpicking I find. BTW, the Mic I use for guitar lessons is a Blue Yeti USB podcasting mic (a condenser) - so it's a very good quality guitar with an affordable microphone.

@@PetersAcousticMusicChannel thank you for the reply. I thought it was a Bourgeois and suspected an Adi aged top. I have been looking at replacing my old 00028. Now wondering if I shld look at OMs. Thanks again. Very nice playing. Inspired. :)

I bought it second hand a bit under a year ago. Interestingly, the middle seems to have opened up a lot in that year. It was a bit 'tight' for the first few months. I know torrified guitars are meant to sound 'mature' from the get-go, so perhaps the opening up of the sound was a result of mechanical 'loosening'. Anyway, that has been my experience.

@PetersAcousticMusicChannel8 күн бұрын
Thanks Joe. Yes, that makes sense, as the E is on the bottom and the top. It's a nicely ambiguous chord because it has elements of E minor, and also elements of D major (the D and the F#).

I better not make a promise Rory, but I will add 'Only a Pawn' to the list (it is becoming a long list :-). I try to release a lesson every Friday, and the current plan is that the next Bob Dylan lesson will about 'Simple Twist of Fate' in a month or so. Between now and then there will be a diversion into guitar technique, then some Pink Floyd, then a Neil Young song, and then a Zombies song... ...Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. Always happy to hear them.

Bob Dylan played this song using Drop D tuning!
@PetersAcousticMusicChannel9 күн бұрын
Well, he is known for changing things up a bit. In this video he is playing with a capo at the first fret (so that puts the song in Eb, half a tone lower than in the Freewheelin' recording): kzbin.info/www/bejne/nonRao2Bhd1pebssi=FSQP_7WjVehrjkZR. Personally, when he is playing the D chord I think I can hear a lot of the 5th string (note of Bb with the capo at the first fret), but I can't hear much if anything of the 6th string (Eb with a capo at 1). However, it is difficult to hear, and that's just my opinion. In the end, whatever works for you is fine.

If you learn this you get 'Boots of Spanish Leather' (from TTTAAC) free, as they have the same chord progression and more or less the same picking. I saw Bob on tour in the 90s and saw him on a couple of nights when he swapped the two of them out with precisely the same full band arrangement. Brilliant, actually.

Ah - 'Boots of Spanish Leather'. Another great lyric there! I will have to try it.
@robertnewell505714 күн бұрын
There's been some discussion of the playing of BOTT in open E. This is only true of the New York sessions. In fact, late on Bob reconvened for 5 of the tracks in Minnesota, with his brother David producing. From Minnesota, TUIP. IW, YABGN, LR&TJOH and IYSHSH. Part of Dylan's reasoning was that the open E made the original tracks too samey, and so open E is either not present or very hard to hear on the Minnesota tracks. Anyone interested in the detail might care to have a read of: ' Simple Twist of Fate: Bob Dylan and the Making of Blood on the Tracks by Andy Gill'. It's a great read.
@PetersAcousticMusicChannel13 күн бұрын
Thanks Robert. It's a fascinating subject. I'm a big fan of some of the Open E versions that didn't make it onto the album - particularly 'You're a Big Girl Now' and 'Idiot Wind'. But having said that, I can see Bob Dylan's reasoning. A whole album of Open E might have lacked variety. It's a wonderful thing that both versions of these songs are available for us to listen to.
@robertnewell505714 күн бұрын
I think that was a really well made lesson, and I enjoyed your style, but I do believe that any attempt to catch this arrangement meaningfully on a single guitar is doomed. For example, I certainly wouldn't go into the straight 4 in a bar downstrokes you suggest at one point. I listened along with the original recording and what you say is correct, but it just doesn't work on its own IMO. I think it's much better to have a version that captures the spirit on a single guitar, and that is often very different from an accurate copy. Given that Dylan has done it so many different ways over the years, doing a completely different arrangement is even better. By contrast, your cover of the NY tapes version is spot on. Great to see somone taking such a close look at the arrangements, when the lyrics usually get all the praise. BOTT is 50 years old this year 👏,

There's a Dylan's song that has never received a satisfying video. I'm referring to "Ballad of Donald White", his most representative song before "Blowin' in the wind". And there is a very little number of covers as well. I would like you - if you think it could be useful for your channel - to deal with that song referring to "The best of Broadside" version, that has the best guitar record, in terms of sound quality.
@PetersAcousticMusicChannel17 күн бұрын
Thank you - I'd actually never heard the Ballad of Donald White. It's not often that you get to hear an early Bob Dylan song for the first time. Parts of the tune remind me of 'I Pity the Poor Immigrant'. Anyway, I like it. Good Dylan song.

Hi, what strings are you using on your guitar? And, if it's not too much to ask, I would like to know your guitar model (even if I'm quite sure it will be out of my league). I'm want to buy an acoustic guitar - having played a classical one for years - and I'm trying to get an idea of the sonority of the different types of strings. Hi - I've had a couple of listens to the original. It's a grower. I noticed it has a bass pedal, as you would hear in some acoustic blues playing, and to my ear it mixes elements of bluegrass and blues in a very atmospheric manner. I wonder whether it was recorded on a small-bodied guitar (the bass is very quiet, and the middle and the top is prominent). It's probably not one I would try to teach, but it's very unique and well-played.

That's not actually a C Major is it, since the root is not a C note?
@PetersAcousticMusicChannel19 күн бұрын
If you finger a C chord with your ring finger fretting the sixth string at the third fret, then the lowest note is a G, so, if you play all six strings, then strictly you are playing a C over G chord (C / G) because the lowest note is a G. However, if, with the same left hand fingering, you only play from the fifth string down, and you don't play the sixth string, then you are playing a regular C chord, because in that case the lowest note is a C (5th string fretted at the 3rd fret).

If you listen carefully you will hear Bob (or Bruce Langhorn more likely) play a Bm6 not a G chord - big difference
@PetersAcousticMusicChannel20 күн бұрын
Hi Alan. Whereabouts in the song do you hear that Bm6?
@lordofthemound389017 күн бұрын
It’s Bob. Listen to the Wittmark Demos. That’s definitely him and it’s nearly identical. There’s no way a second guitarist could sync up with his harmonica playing and broken bars on a song like “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.” While “Girl from the North Country” is more straightforward and steady in terms of form, if Dylan can play “Don’t Think Twice” he can certainly play “Girl from the North Country.”
