45:48 This segment was really inspiring. My ADHD simply will not allow me keep track of more than a few things at a time. To the point in which I will break down complex processes into a couple of core drivers and layer things on by sequence until I have kind of a checklist I can run through in real time. My attention span was chaos until probably my late 30s. I think it was age that just kind of quieted my mind so that I could better focus. I’m nowhere near the caliber of player that Spiders is and his content is far beyond anything I have the drive to create, but it was great to hear his experience. Anytime I hear stories like this it’s comforting and I feel less alone in my own struggles.

Always a good start to the day with a Dace video!!! One more element of the scoring is that picking up medals chain multiply as well! Trying to link the star clusters to keep them increasing in value and manipulating the magnet is very rewarding and also puts the player in very difficult positions on screen. The game is really fun. I loved the presentation and music in Hexapoda but I think this one nailed the mechanics and replayability. TOMA is getting stronger!

This game wasn't on my radar at all. I'm happy with youtube's algorithm, for once. I just didn't entirely understand the stakes of the game from what you described. If you run out of lives, do you go back to some point when the game saved, or do you start from scratch? Either way, I think the very limited margin for error probably adds a lot of tension. Obvious as that is, I think it's pretty important.
@Shmuptopia

Thanks for swinging by! Each run starts at the crystal station and is from scratch. You are absolutely correct. The limited margin for error plays a significant role in the tension. @@Shmuptopia Excellent! That's what I had assumed. I've grown to really appreciate high stakes in game design as of late. I think modern sensibilities have made players complacent, and inconsistent in their abilities. Also, arcade action games are just great in general, and I feel something precious was lost from the era. But hey, people are still making things like Rainchaser, so it's not dead and buried or anything like that, just niche. I will help maintain the niche! I can understand why this would have deterred you before given the story you shared about coming back into games with the eye-opening moment you had and recognizing challenge or difficulty in a refreshed light. I think my approach and perspective to games comes naturally and easily due to my overall choice to strive for positivity. Every game out there can be an epic experience that has an ocean of things to appreciate and get excited about or chock full of things to complain about and it always boils down to what mindset we bring into the mix. Yeah, I wasn't sure where else to throw that clip in since it felt so out of place. Man, I've got some wild ones from a game called Infernium, which I'll need to fling your way at some point. @Shmuptopia
@Shmuptopia 10 күн бұрын
In a straightforward sense, things are more aggressive much earlier than they would be if playing on a lower difficulty. I haven't jumped into the easiest mode, so I'm not sure how little that throws at the player but you can definitely spot the difference between difficulty 5 and 7 if you were to jump into the game and compare them. There may be other factors that I'm unaware of. The enemy count is always the same from what I've played, it's just that their behavior is different. Trust this helps!

Thanks for checking this out and commenting. I appreciate the feedback and am happy to hear you enjoyed this. It was a blast working on this video. It's one of those things - you'll have ideas about what the game all does, but when you buckle down to examine it more closely, you start seeing a great deal more. You're spot on about the tension, too and I think that's a huge part of what still keeps things wild. It wouldn't be nearly as exhilarating if the player had more to work with or unlockables to access over multiple runs. It's such a thrilling ride as is.

No worries, man! It's one of those games where - in order to have footage for covering everything, I needed to beat it again and given the nature of Overwhelm, I had no idea if it would be a matter of days or well over a week when the script alone was a already over a week to bang out. Getting this finalized kept me up late last night. Glad you enjoyed this video, though! These days, I don't have too many permadeath games on the go like I used to (especially before Shmups), but I still love this kind of framework. That post I shared on Twitter last week about clearing Shiren 6 for the first time, that's an absolutely solid roguelike and it inspires me to get back at Shiren 5, Tangledeep, and others at a gradual pace. Put it in writing and call it a manifesto, this is a MTP chocked full of the flavors I crave in shmup adjacent media. Spiders meshes so well with the series and I can’t imagine a better candidate to speak their piece. While I could easily write an essay per topic that was discussed, I will focus in on two. My biggest perspective change in shmups was realizing that scoring in not “the next level” but rather a different journey altogether. But like many journeys, portions of the path run parallel and can be traversed in tandem. I would have never attempted the Crimzon Clover Arcade original 1CC if I hadn’t been forced to engage with the scoring system through the time attack mode. Being corralled into making score centric play viable by maximizing score potential and minimizing run length (5 minutes for CC time attack) is like a hyperbolic time chamber for understanding shmups in a different light. I highly recommend caravan style shmups to players nervous about trying to score a game they can’t clear. Low stakes due to concise run times and high reward in that your score improvements will be exponential early on. Second point regarding training and discipline. Learning to learn is something you can learn preemptively, but learning how YOU learn is something that comes with time. I know players who boot up emulators and will build out save states to practice with on their first time through a game because they know they’ll want to go back and use those established checkpoints to spring their practice off by regimenting their play to point towards success. And I know players (myself include) who have a very fluid approach to tackling shmups that still requires dedication and practice. My training model is pointed towards understanding the requests of the game, and creating training conditions that best emulate the live experience of the run. This can involve much hopping between practice modes, live runs, replay analysis, and most importantly: breaks from playing to allow your brain to decouple your time spent into usable information. But I wouldn’t have known that was my preferred style had I not tried other methods. Experiment with yourself and the game will speak to you. Absolutely phenomenal episode. Spiders is incredibly eloquent and I’m glad he was able to crack the nut of Shmuptopia and give the listeners more insight into Dace. Now we just gotta get the three of us together for a podcast haha. Thank you both for this!
@Shmuptopia
@Shmuptopia 13 күн бұрын
Absolutely! I think part of what makes scoring initially appear to be the next step is that it's a path that is about getting better than before and to have as much room to work with for scoring. The ideal foundation would be to know how to clear a game pretty consistently so that you have the entire run to score in as opposed to only knowing the first couple of stages. It's misleading, though I can understand why many see what appears to be a natural progression pointing toward clearing, then scoring. You share a great point about how you might never have gotten into CC OG without dabbling with the scoring system. It's great how we can sometimes see that something is more approachable once we realize we have certain tools or knowledge at our disposal. Without that, an experience can often feel much more challenging. In many cases, even having a basic grasp of a system, like in your example, is enough to see significant changes when applied to the full run. Yeah, I'm totally on board for a session with the three of us at some point. I think dungeon crawlers would definitely be a solid time, but we'll see what we can cook up. Thanks so much for checking this out and sharing your thoughts!

Thanks guys that was amazing to hear! If I can put my grain of salt about the "1CC is just the beginning, you need to go further", I agree and disagree 😁. For me who is really into Shmups for less than 3 years 1CC is the perfect balance between knowing a game without passing 6 months and hundreds of hours on it! I'm very curious and still in "discovery mode" in the genre so I wish to clear a few Toaplan, Cave, Psikyo, NMK, Konami, IREM, Touhou, other Doujins, Raizing, Compile, Technosoft, etc to have a little overview of the genre and then put a lot of times in the few I really love (I already put few titles on this list that I need to go back later ^^)

Nice! It's great to get the superplayer insights, but getting the thoughts of everyone, at all skill levels, can always bring up things you haven't really thought about. I think Spiders has the right attitude about approaching games, so there's potential there. Also, to note, on that orthodoxy thing that gets brought up around 25 min, that's always been a point of contention for me (and I commented on it in the Cygni video), because since late Cave and Touhou there has been a very strong distance between 90s and 16-bit horizontals (which are my main games), and more modern stuff influenced by danmaku, those games trying to take danmaku to horizontal like Battle Traverse, which I respect, but don't quite like conceptually. I actually don't really get to complain about this that often because people like these games, but I feel like there's this certain disconnect with how horizontal games have been made traditionally and the slow infiltration of bullet patterns that don't really read properly on the screen.
@Shmuptopia
@Shmuptopia 15 күн бұрын
Thanks so much, Mot! It's always great to hear people appreciate these chats. The horizontal/bullet hell mix is definitely a tricky thing to pull off since you can't simply use the same approach you would with vertical. There's the e-clip/c-clip which is at the very bottom of the shaft to hold everything together. Is that what you mean? Or have you removed the small PCB the micro switches are attached to and are referring to a washer somewhere below that?

@@Shmuptopia the clip. I just had to open it again but it is now all secure and working fine. The previous owner hadn’t reattached it and had shipped it to me with the stick sunken. With your vid and another I was able to fix it, but I’d still like to know of a good replacement or upgrade part, if possible. Thank you.

@@Coastsandcoasters If you're after a different joystick specifically, that will all really depend on what genre you mostly play in or sometimes if what specific games you want it for since the feeling and performance may need to hit certain conditions for you. As for buttons, it's more or less the same thing. For instance, if you're playing arcade shooters, buttons aren't a huge deal one way or another, but in fighting games you may want something that feels comfortable to you or gives you feedback like something clicky compared to linear.

Did you cut the holes by hand or machine?

I used a print/cut service, so this would have been all done by machine.

Can the S15 right thumb button be remapped for like a MP+MK for sf6?

That's a great question. I'm not sure though, I've never considered or checked whether you can remap to have a single input combine two functions. The Haute42 Discord server is bound to have someone who knows for sure!

Great to see you revisit these Psikyo games Dace. I had a blast with Samurai Aces but never pushed the mode beyond normal - might be time to visit soon(ish - Garegga’s got me very focused right now!). I’d really love another crack at Gunbird 2 too - I didn’t get that one - unfinished business there! Very interesting to hear your thoughts on difficulty too, got me thinking that has!

Thanks, brother! These Psikyo games are such a blast every time I get back to them. No matter how many times I jump in, they always feel fresh. GB2 is one of my considerations for the next episode, by the way. I didn't have one planned like I normally do, and that one feels like a great option!

Great review! It's on sale for $5.59 (along with Metal Black) until 9/25/2024 in US eShop, so I'm going to grab it! Appreciate the info on the game. It looks right up my alley. rr

It's insanely rare for AA releases to go on sale, so that's fantastic to hear! Thanks for stopping by and enjoy the games!

There are soooooo many brands now which is cool but overwhelming. Waiting for 8bitdo to make one maybe, i can't buy all these lolol

It'd be neat to see what 8bitdo comes up with if they decide to bang one out. But yeah, compared to even just two years ago, there are an insane amount of companies doing controllers now.

This looks up my alley! As much as I like the Haute 42, the small keyboard layout cramps my hands up within 20 minutes. WASD layout for shmups and Up at the thumbs for fighters… perfect layout plus the ergonomics:)
