Just to clarify… if the things the artist requests in the rider l exceeded the amount in the contract the additional amount gets taken out of the artist fee?
@LivemusicbusinessАй бұрын
Not necessarily. The promoter will have allocated an amount for catering and other rider requests. If the artist’s demands exceed what has been budgeted the promoter can either supply only items to the value of the budget or decide to supply them anyway. Then, if the ticket sales, ‘break percentage’, i.e. the vs 80% after costs clause, the extra costs will be deducted from the final amount due to the artist. This will then reduce the amount of extra money the artist received. The upshot is - artists must not ask for loads of stuff on the rider if they want to make money! Thanks for the question and I hope this helps?

I'm not sure what your question is. Venue rent/ hire is a promoters cost and I have included it in the costs mentioned in this video. I hope this helps?

Back when I drank, one pint of Tito's vodka, (Grey Goose if no Tito's), to be delivered to the production office prior to end of show. This was for me to take on the bus, or to the hotel. Nowadays, it's a six pack of Coca Cola. (Pepsi is ok). I seem to have traded alcoholism for diabetes.😁

What about DJs who only play weekend festivals and they aren’t exactly on tour but they’re always at a festival ? Do they go home during the week and head to the festivals on the weekend? That’s what I do right now
@Livemusicbusiness Жыл бұрын
Hi Freya, thanks for the question. Yes, they would go home between shows, which is obviously expensive (travel to and from home base instead of travel just to the next show).

Can this work if I’m looking to be a promoter and throw my own shows ?
@Livemusicbusiness2 жыл бұрын
Yes. These videos describe how concert promoters do the deals for contemporary live music. There is risk involved. Concert promoters have to lay out a lot of cash, often months before the concert date. However successful concert promoters will see rewards in the long run
@johnyoung51472 жыл бұрын
VAT is inc in the ticket price, currently 20%...not sure why you're using the Lex in London and US dollars as the currency as an example, but a 10 pound ticket is only worth £8.33 so nett income on a sell out is £1666.67, not £2000....less 700 promoter's costs....id offer 800 guarantee.....1000 and you're losing money before youve even started
@Livemusicbusiness2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for comment. The calculations and currencies I use are illustrative as these videos are watched by people from all over the planet (hello everyone!). I don't mention sales tax (VAT in the UK) for the same reason. Thanks again for watching and commenting.

What is a buyout. When someone says we carry full production that requires a buy out.
@Livemusicbusiness2 жыл бұрын
Buy out usually refers to catering. The promoter supplies a fixed amount of money per person for dinner, instead of supplying cooked meals. The artists contact rider would stipulate 'buyout of $X per person, for X people' where X is the number in the touring party.

Hi I've watched this video and the one on concert promoters and it's probably raised more questions than answered. In my experience as a working musician, there seems to be a "blurry line" between some booking agents and promoters, in my experience anyway. For example on several occasions I've approached venues for work, either for my 4 piece band or solo, and venues will either say yes you can speak to the manager OR will say "you need to contact our booking agency". Sometimes when contacting the outside booking agent, they will say "yes the booker for that venue is so and so" and will either mention the manager for the venue or another booking agent. Most Booking Agents I've worked with (as a covers band) only deal with venues, in other words they're a go between linking the artist to the venue BUT they are not exclusively working for the artist. Very rarely have I come across a Booking Agency that will ask for exclusivity. I've also organised my own shows where I've acted as both a Promoter (Promoting the show) and a Booking Agent (booking warm up bands etc....). There's a 3rd category for me anyway which is doing all the "hands on work" eg: Setting up the P.A., MC'ing, Finding Sponsorship, selling the tickets etc..... It's pretty tiring having to do everything yourself and performing as well. So from what I can ascertain there are probably 4 distinct categories: 1/ Venue Managers/Bookers 2/ Outside Booking Agents that ONLY work for venues 3/ Outside Booking Agents that ONLY work for artists (and generally demand exclusivity) 4/ Booking Agents/Promoters (do both jobs) Also, if you're a big name artist, say like Liam Gallagher or Ed Sheeran, can you chop and change booking agents at any time? Can any venues booking agent book you at any time eg: say the TRNSMT Festival in Scotland wants to book Liam Gallagher, do they contact his Agent or do they book him direct?
@Livemusicbusiness2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for posting! I’m sorry if the videos have confused you. I am presenting information about the contemporary live music business. This involves artists who perform their own material and are probably signed or ‘DIY/indie’ and have artist management and some form of income - probably from a publishing deal. I have little knowledge of the covers/cabaret side of thing, and so I don’t cover that. You are right when detailing the various ‘blurred lines’ when it comes to job roles in smaller capacity venues. The information I presented is the general overview of how concerts and tours get booked, and there are always variations on the theme. Your list is also correct, and again there will be variations. Generally, the smaller the capacity, the more hats must be worn by anyone trying to make a success of live music at that venue. Your questions: <<Also, if you're a big name artist, say like Liam Gallagher or Ed Sheeran, can you chop and change booking agents at any time?>> Yes. Booking agents do not have contracts with their artists. The relationships are based on ‘understanding’ (at least in the UK and Europe) and so an artist can leave their agent, and vice versa. An agent is also free to take their roster with them if they change agencies, although I am sure that arrangement is being looked at after Ed Sheeran’s agent left CAA to set up his own agency, taking Ed with him! <<Can any venues booking agent book you at any time eg: say the TRNSMT Festival in Scotland wants to book Liam Gallagher, do they contact his Agent or do they book him direct?>> Everything goes through the booking agent. Again, this is one of the conventions of the live music business. It would be impossible to book an artist without the agent finding out about the deal. I hope this helps?

Hi. Once artists are booked for shows how many contracts should I have ? Ie. Venue contract with promoter and contract bet. ARTIST and promoter? Thanks
@Livemusicbusiness4 жыл бұрын
The artist will have a contract with the promoter. The promoter may be the venue as well (in house promoter). Promoters who hire a venue (outside promoter) will have some hire/rental agreement with the venue and the artist would not get involved with that.
