Ow many holes in the bottom and what size are the tanks
@adriankap29787 ай бұрын
I love this video! I just bought the exact same one and will be doing the same. I'm thinking of drilling into the sides about 1 to 1 1/2in up the side to create a water reservoir so I don't have to water as often. Our water is so expensive I don't want it to run out as fast but not wanting the roots to rot either. What do you think?
@HomemadeHomeMegan7 ай бұрын
It might risk the water in the bottom stagnating and the new stuff just to run out the side? But it is worth a shot to try it!! Let me know how it works! 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

I've resently been interested in starting my own garden. But the wood version I'm not that interested in and thought this would be a great idea. I'm looking start out with bell peppers, new potatoes and butter lettuce/arugula. Then I would like eventually do others , I wanted to do cucumbers but I hear they can get invasive.
@HomemadeHomeMegan Жыл бұрын
I am so happy you like this idea!! This is a great way to start gardening on a small footprint with limited space. With cucumbers you just have to pick the right variety - there are some that are Bush types that stay compact and don’t travel and take up nearly as much space and that are still great producers. Good luck and let me know how it turns out!

We are getting ready to put out our container garden. If we go this route, how many bags of soil do we need for one of the stock tanks?
@lanceputnam2096 Жыл бұрын
You will need bigger holes and much more holes then you’re showing
@HomemadeHomeMegan Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. The hole size works well for us on the elevated 2x4's, but you can definitely add more, or larger diameter drainage holes, too!

Alexis, so sorry I didn't get back to you sooner! I hope you were able to find the stock tanks near you. Most ranch and feed stores will carry them, or order them for you if you want specific sizes they don't have on hand. Mine was 6'x2'x1'.

Look into the self wicking stock tank gardens. They are made with the deeper tanks and you have to water them less when you set up the self wicking system in the bottom. There is a bunch of videos on it.
@HomemadeHomeMegan2 жыл бұрын
I’ve seen those, they are super neat. These tanks are good for beginners who haven’t made those kinds of jumps yet.
@lisawillis82272 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. Quick question. Some people put a layer of gravel or river stones in the bottom of the tank instead of drilling holes for drainage. Is one method better than the other? Thanks
@HomemadeHomeMegan2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa!! Stock tanks are meant to hold water, so in order for it to actually drain you need the holes. River rock in the bottom will give the water a place to settle without over saturating the soil, but if you water too much you will end up filling up the tank which is bad. My advice is to put drain holes in the bottom no matter what. You can also add river rock to the bottom as well, but do not forgo the drainage holes.
@HomemadeHomeMegan2 жыл бұрын
@Duellona Boudica Not all stock tanks have a drain port. The ones I bought did not have drain ports in them, so I drilled holes into the bottom.

I use to use Screen Door Repair screen over my drainage holes in the bottom of my pots (so the soil doesn't leach out the drain holes)...but after seeing her "Brilliant Idea" I will now use landscaping cloth from now on.

Weed liner makes absolutely NO sense. Weeds will not grow through that metal, at least for years after that weed fabric is totally decomposed. Love the idea, save some$$, too.
@HomemadeHomeMegan3 жыл бұрын
Hi! The purpose of the weed liner isn’t for weeds, it’s to top any soil wash out through the drain holes. It’s not a necessity but it’s helpful.

@@HomemadeHomeMegan Out here in SoCal, I've used 1/4" builders cloth / fancy name for "1/4" screen" and window screen, heavy duty farm cloth " kind they use over the ground that drains well but keeps weeds out, and all kinds of rocks. Found that a layer of1" gravel with farm cloth on top seems to work best. 1" gravel is big enough to not plug holes, leaves air space, and farm cloth "I get from Farm Tech in rolls" is tough stuff but drains well. Use 3/8 to 1/2" dia drain holes. Roots of plants get matted in screen and have caused root rot for me. The 1" gravel with the farm cloth on top like you show works good for me. Good informative video.
