Is there ever a circumstance in which you've fallen off? Seems kinda scary to think you can fall off and your boat just keeps chugging along without you lol

I want to get into this but idk where to start, if I took sailing classes would it be more beneficial to get into catamaran training specifically, or does it not matter functionally and I can train on any monohull dinghy and then hop on to a cat and pick up this? I feel like this would be a good hobby to keep me in relatively good shape, my wife would be down for it I believe but she suffers from some physical issues so I dont want it to be too physically demanding, figured the cat would be more stable than the monohull
@joshdanhallКүн бұрын
Hi @joe, I wonder if you agree that one exception to the rule is the bear away at the top mark? I find that sheeting out transfers power to the top of the sail and causes nose-dive. Keeping the sail shape flat and releasing traveler instead seems to get around this problem. I'm sailing an F16 (Goodall Viper). May I suggest a video on this topic? I'd guess the technique might differ depending on the type of cat.

I am always impressed by the speeds you and others are doing on the non foiling boats. Seperate classes is an idea. You could also score them by rating (like the Texel rating). Last year a Hobie 16 won the Round Texel. The Nacra's 20 ft FCS had line honours. Closely followed by the F18 Goodall. I hope to be on the water soon with an IFly15 with a bigger than standard rig. If succesfull I will send you a video for the speed stick.
@JoyriderTV3 күн бұрын
Yes, I think so too - when I get time, I'll make new all team leaderboards by type of boat. I could also use the rating but I don't think that would work so well as, in my findings, boats like the F18 can achieve an equally high speed with or without spinnaker and will always get beaten by the likes of the H16 and 18. I look forward to seeing you on the new Stick with the IFly!!

Hi Joe, I'm new to sailing and started sailing the maricat 4.3 and nacra 5.0. Why you wouldn't just pull the traveller in for more power and adjust the main sheet from there? And I also noticed that you ran the main loose from the boom, is there any reason for this? I have just run it tight the whole time I sailed it. Thanks
@JoyriderTV4 күн бұрын
Yes, Generally I set the traveller like gears and then ply the mainsheet from that position for small adjustments. Sometimes, sailing solo I run out of hands to pull the traveller in. This is a custom made mainsail that is loose footed - start sail will gain into the boom.

Im 21 years old brazilian, i never had any form of contact with sailing all my family ( including me ) are on the aviation industry somehow during the pandemic my dad had this crazy ideia to buy a 27ft sailboat so we can actuality go outside a litle, it was strange at first, we lived on the boat for about half a year we made a lot of friends for life and i learned that sailors are the most heartfull people in the world, we learned the basics ( after all sailing and flying the airplane are kinda similar in the physics aspect ) and i fell in love i fell in love so much Unfortunately brazilian currency is devaluing and we had some problems that made us sell the boat. Fast forward 3 years and my dad want to retire and move to the beach where he can buy a sailboat again and i am SUPER excited, BUT any of us remember and didn't learned how to sail properly so i ( as the younger one ) am assigned to learn it so i can teach my parents, also i want a sailboat to enjoy sailing whenever i want, after all my parents are older and don't have all the energy to stay on the water all day😂 Now i have a new challenge, to buy / reform a laser or hobby cat. here in brazil, its a very nieche thing out here so it is ABSURDLY expensive, my sallary is not good but im saving all i can so i can sail again For now i just look at people on the water with a smile bc i know i will have one someday 🙂 (We treveled to the beach and the hotel is in the front of a marina so i see people sailing all day 😂 i got emotional here and decided to tell this long story ) happy sailing everyone

I wonder... is it possible to learn to sail by yourself? I was thinking about: 1.Study the sail points 2.Apply everything on the Tribord 5s. 3. When you are good on the Tribord 5s move on to an RS Zest or similar dinghy. 4. Learn from your mistakes, get wet, get wet and learn. 5. When you are ready you can move on to a larger boat like a Hobie .
@JoyriderTV17 күн бұрын
Yes, It's certainly possible to learn by yourself, more now than ever with facilities like Joyrider TV there to help you along the way. Most important is starting in a safe environment without too much wind. I'll talk about this in the next Live Q+A on Friday 10th
@Enuuuuu29917 күн бұрын
@JoyriderTV Ok, but to start sailing on a catamaran you have to start with monohulls like Laser, right? It would be nice if you made a video on how to balance the weight well on a sail like that.
@JoyriderTV17 күн бұрын
@Enuuuuu299 here is a video that i made on the topic: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5rEfqStZ72fsJI
@Enuuuuu29916 күн бұрын
@JoyriderTV I've seen it. I think it's best to start with a monohull like Laser or RS Zest, but how do you go from that to catamarans? I mean... a monohull of that size has only a mainsail, while a catamaran also has a jib. Then I don't understand why a catamaran can have difficulty tacking without a jib.
@JoyriderTV16 күн бұрын
@Enuuuuu299 ok, I think this will certainly be better answered in the Q+A on the 10th
@rev.jeanocuilinn327318 күн бұрын
Cant find a great place to ask this but low wind conditions might work . Do you ever sail downwind wing on wing or is it too prone to pitch pole? Also, does skulling the rudder move the boat forward if youre really in irons? Cheers
@JoyriderTV17 күн бұрын
Great questions. I'll discuss them in the next Live Q+A on Friday 10th But for now: Yes, you can sail straight downwind but it's not as efficient - you wouldn't get to your downwind objective as quickly. Yes, you can turn the boat by skulling - not as quick to react as on a mono but still works in very light wind.
@rev.jeanocuilinn327319 күн бұрын
Can you sail wing and wing downwind or is it very prone to pitch poling? Cheers
@JoyriderTV17 күн бұрын
Yes you can although it's not as efficient - You'd only pitchpole if it was very windy but the bigger danger would be the accidental gybe.
@jackkavanagh-wd2xm20 күн бұрын
