That is a great question. As I always say to my black belts - do we want Kenpo that works for some or Kenpo that works for all? There is no doubt that some of our Kenpo self-defense techniques are ideally suited for a defender who is bigger (or at least similar in size) to the attacker, including the extension to Striking Serpent's Head. Another obvious one is Twirling Sacrifice. However, it is more likely that we will be smaller than our opponent for these types of attacks. Conversely, what I like so much about Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is that the self-defense system does not have an overreliance on strength and speed and the focus is on energy efficiency. I have no interest in creating my own system of martial arts. Mr. Parker left us a masterpiece. I honestly think that American Kenpo is one of the more complete martial arts in existence today, apart from the fact that the system has no answer for what to do if we are taken to the ground. I know that some other Kenpo seniors (e.g., Mohamad Tabatabai, Jeff Speakman) feel the same. As such, I try to use my Gracie Jiu-Jitsu training to properly address what-if scenarios that may result if the fight goes to the ground. I also use Filipino Martial Arts background to work drills with my students (e.g., stick, knife) and to improve on the gaps and problems contained in some of the club and knife defenses.

The extensions add to the existing base self-defense techniques in American Kenpo. Although the extensions utilize many of the rearranged movements already contained in the base techniques, they uniquely show how upper body principles can also be applied to the lower half of the body.

O' Sensei Seabrook throughout my difficult martial arts journey I have dealed with many ailments, injuries from the military, and health issues. I kept striving and never gave up. The time I spent in the wheelchair after being in an explosion in Iraq, and the 18 months of rehab I went to was one of the hardest times of my life. Then I had to gradually get back into the martial arts. Eventually I came back strong and did my kata and techniques at full force. Now I am nearly 60 and I am at another dilemma as I get older it is now getting harder for me to do the techniques, forms, and kata as I did before. I lack some power, balance (I do use a walking stick or a walker to walk long distances), and coordination. What is your advice for an aging lifelong martial artist as me who cannot perform as they once did? Hai. Grandmaster K, MA

First, thank you so much for your service. I am deeply sorry that you had to go through all of that and the fact that you persevered and yet keep training makes it evident how impressive you are. One thing I have come to love so much about Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is that it does not rely on physical attributes (e.g., strength, speed) but rather energy efficiency. Similarly, I would not worry about challenges you may experience with respect to power, balance, or coordination. Do everything slow or at moderate pace and just try your best to refine your techniques and skill. If you ever had to defend yourself, I know you could kick it up a notch!

Why is there a kick in Delayed Sword? Since coming back to kenpo when I was a kid my school switched from the IKKA (24 technique) ciriculum to the AKKI but this was before a lot of what the AKKI was working on was published. And that was also before I could find the whole IKKA ciriculum online. At Yellow belt, the AKKI does a techique called flashing swords and a technique called swords of fury. These are similar to Delayed Sword and Sword of Destruction. Without the kick and it looks like they are building the precurser movements for 5 swords. This is similar to techniques the Tracy's seem to be doing (and I'm less familiar with them) called Chinese Sword. Which has an A and B variant and looks like to me Delayed Sword without the kick. So what I think I'm seeing is Ed Parker put a kick in there. And it was either added by Parker after the Tracys got a hold of it or take out by the Tracys. And Mr Mills also chose to take it out. And I'm scratching my head about whether there was something mechanical Ed Parker was trying to achieve or if I'm just getting way to deep in the woods on a yellow belt technique that is set up to teach a basic that obviously there are a dozen other approaches for.
@SeabrookMartialArtsAcademy
@SeabrookMartialArtsAcademy Ай бұрын
The technique was originally called Inside Defense, which was done as block, chop, and then kick. It was also originally taught for a punch but later changed to a lapel grab when it became a Yellow Belt technique. The order was rearranged to make it "Delayed Sword" (i.e., hence, the hand sword is delayed) because many students would retreat too soon in the original technique, Inside Defense. Also, the 1975 Accumulative Journal has the technique written out as Delayed Sword - block, kick, and hand sword.

Please could you tell us more in depth about the origin, theory and way of practicing freestyle techniques and why only many people practice it up to green belt?
@SeabrookMartialArtsAcademy
@SeabrookMartialArtsAcademy Ай бұрын
Most Kenpo schools, to my knowledge, do not teach the Kenpo freestyle techniques and many black belts who now train with me online had never heard of them before I started teaching them. At Seabrook Martial Arts Academy, I choose to teach the complete system, which also includes the freestyle techniques. I see tremendous value in them, as they help fill the gap between self-defense techniques and sparring, understanding footwork patterns and range, use of the equation formula, and they are very offensive as opposed to defensive like our self-defense techniques. Interestingly, Bruce Lee played a major part in formulating the Kenpo freestyle techniques and some of the Kenpo Purple Belt freestyle techniques can be found in his fight with Chuck Norris in Return of the Dragon. The techniques are very similar to what you would see in Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do. The Yellow Belt to Purple Belt freestyle techniques start left foot to left foot since that is a common stance for people who fight and are right-handed. The Blue Belt and Green Belt freestyle techniques change up the stance patterns since both you and your opponent will not always be in a left-to-left stance. For example, the freestyle techniques show right to left stances, right to right stances, and left to right stances. As for why the freestyle techniques stop at Green Belt or possibly Brown Belt, remember that these are formulas as opposed to actual freestyle, so they teach us applications once they are learned and mastered. From what I have been told, most Kenpo schools did not teach all the freestyle techniques even when Mr. Parker was still alive. They are tools to help us.

Sensei, could you please tell us about the historical origin, theory and way of practicing the staff set, since many of its techniques are unpublished and sometimes it is a little difficult to interpret them, and if in the future you could make videos on the subject
@SeabrookMartialArtsAcademy
@SeabrookMartialArtsAcademy Ай бұрын
The Staff Set gives an introduction to long-range weaponry and provides several aspects of three-dimensional staff fighting. While many Kenpoists claim that Chuck Sullivan (10th Degree Black Belt and co-founder of the International Karate Connection Association) created the Staff Set, that is not true. The Staff Set came from a Chinese Kung Fu expert that taught Ed Parker. Once he had the movements memorized, Ed Parker then taught the Staff Set to Chuck Sullivan. Seeing a lot of repetitiveness, particularly with the spinning maneuvers, Sullivan streamlined the Staff Set and got the approval of the new version from Ed Parker. I will prioritize teaching a breakdown of each of the techniques from Staff Set in the near future.

Mr. Seabrook, I wonder in your opinion (and I truly am curious) what is the broader purpose and application in combat for the use and practice of "category completion" and in your opinion do you truly believe that any category is actually completed or merely observed from another perspective and opportunity in understanding? Great to see you guys out having a great time Sir!
@SeabrookMartialArtsAcademy
@SeabrookMartialArtsAcademy Ай бұрын
That is a great question. Here is how I explain it to my students - Kenpo is a study of motion, so sometimes we show category completion with footwork (e.g., the rear crossover in the extension of Scraping Hoof vs. the front crossover in Captured Leaves); opposite side hand-foot and same side hand-foot vs (e.g., Protecting Fans and Darting Leaves); reverses (e.g., Fatal Cross and Hooking Wings); opposites (e.g., Destructive Twins and Protecting Fans); over and under (e.g., Crossing Talon and Glancing Spear); horizontal and vertical strike parallels (e.g., Checking the Storm and Thrusting Salute), short range vs. long range (e.g., Circling the Storm and Flashing Mace); showing both sides of striking patterns (e.g., the ending to Escape from the Storm); showing in/out/up/down patterns (e.g., tracking our wrist in Darting Leaves, Dance of Darkness, and in Long 2 and Long 5); and switches (e.g., hop switch in Bowing to Buddha vs, the back to front and front to back switches in Long 3). Nonetheless, category completion is not in the Encyclopedia of Kenpo, which likely means it is not an Ed Parker term, and most likely came from Huk Planas. Now the question about whether a category is truly “completed”. As an epidemiologist and biostatistician, I often develop survey instruments for participants to fill out. It is very important that all possible answers to a survey question are options for participants, and this is typically followed by an “other” categorical response if none of the above options are applicable for a respondent. The “other” option becomes the default when something is missing from the other possibilities. So, if I were to take, say, the family grouping of Dance of Death, Thundering Hammers, and Sleeper, all three of them start with the rear hand in the hanging position, whereas Flashing Mace starts with the rear hand up as you apply the arm break, and a technique such as Attacking Mace or Flashing Wings has the rear hand chambered. Although we do not have a self-defense technique where we execute a left inward block or parry on the outside of a right punch with the right hand covering, I am not sure that means the category is not “completed”. It could be an “other” option. We certainly tend to keep the cover hand up when we are sparring, so people know how to use it even though it was not technically shown in a self-defense technique. These are just my thoughts sir. RESPECT!

Good video. I'm glad I'm not the only one that doesn't favor an outward block with palm facing me unless my attacker is right on top and in close to me like in Short Form #2. When I do the outward, it's almost always with palm facing forward as an extended outward block. But now years later I parry more often than not which gives me more time to decide whether this attacker needs to go to the hospital or not. LOL Yeah, I know...I'm getting soft and merciful in my old age.
@SeabrookMartialArtsAcademy
@SeabrookMartialArtsAcademy Ай бұрын
Great comment. I agree. The other consideration is that when Kenpo practitioners do the vertical outward block, besides the fact that nobody blocks like that in a real fight, by blocking at the elbow without connecting with the wrist first, it increases the risk of getting hit. It also breaks the rule of never passing up a body joint without checking.
