4:21 noteworthy comment about different bass notes under a chord (besides the root, i.e. slash chords). Tal says you "can put many bass notes besides the tonic on a chord, and come out with some strange things" "that kind of adventuring...taking liberties with the harmonies...has always appealed to me because I was a great fan of pianist Art Tatum" "I tried to, at least, learn some lessons in reharmonizing tunes, which he did very frequently"

I learnt the most about jazz guitar from your LACM lessons when I had been stagnating up till then. The best most clear and systematic jazz guitar teacher that I have ever come across. Thank you.

I was fortunate to see him several times in a group setting and with Ralph Towner. Ive been listening to him for many years and i can appreciate his invaluable contributions to jazz .May he rest in peace 🙏 he may be gone but not forgotten !!!!

E Bb C F# F# C D Ab Ab D E Bb The second chord lacks both E and Bb (guide tones) and might need context to convince my ear over C7. Still, whole tone harmony is very cool!

I'd kill for those hands. As I was cursed with THE smallest set of hands ever bestowed on a male human hand, after 30 years of picking I finally had to have carpal tunnel surgery performed on my left fretting hand. It has been 4 weeks and am ready to jump back into things. With my small hand set--one I have yet to find smaller than my own through myriad comparisons--I will declare that a larger hand for guitar playing does make things easier in achieving skill and technical prowess. Gone are the days of heavy gauged strings strung on an archtop hollowbody to .011 gauge strings on a Fender Telecaster. Going to try to make the Tele my mainstay. I'd say 'let's hope...' but hope feels dead in 2024. Let's see how far we get ruining the environment from mesosphere to ocean bottom over these next handful of years because things aren't hot or ravaged enough at this point.

I hope you see this comentas it has been a year since you posted here in your YT channel. This is so beautiful Jody! I have all your books, Beginner, Intermmediate and Advance. By the way if you do not mind my asking, what guage strinbgs are you using with your Klein guitar? As I approach 65 years of age, I wonder what the lowest guage I can use and still roduce a good jazz sound on a solid guitar. I am thinking I want to go down from 12 to 9. Your thoughst would be much appreciated.

Hi christo7988! Thanks for the nice comments.....The kind of strings you use really depends on the guitar you are playing. The Klein guitars you've seen on many of these videos sported 10-46 sets. That what I usually use on solidbodies. I have 12-52 on my Gibson 175. You may want to go with 10-46 on solidbodies and maybe 11-49 on hollowbodies.....it's difficult to get a good sound on the 9-42 sets.I know they feel great but I find them lacking. Also if you are used to 12-42 sets and have a heavier touch, the 9-42 strings may feel pretty unsatisfying. Mostly, it's important to take care of your hands--ultimately you have to go with what feels best and is non-injurious.....also, watch for some new uploads in the near future....

@@JodyFisherMusic Wow Jody! I expected to see a reply maybe I was hoping in month or 2 but man this means a lot! Thanks for the tips! I'm hitting 65 and though my hands fingers are still strong even with 12s on the arch top and yes, 10s on my l=solids, I was thinking of going down to 9 so I can play till I;m in my 80s or even 90s LOL but I will cross that brdige when I get there., For now I will stick to 10s on my solids which is either this cheap "Slick" guitar brand you see in the pciture of my channel or my neloved telecasters. The slick for a mere $245 is SURPTISINGLY solid and a great tone!!! Cheers and take care!! Looking forward to your next post!!!

I have 2 of your music/guitar books. I've loved Ted Greene for decades. Your playing reminds me of him (his style). But Ted was Ted & you are you, and you are an amazing guitarist! Thanks.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I`ve heard the subject, heard it in many tunes without having realized that it was quartal, but your clarification on the guitar is an eye opener for me, thanks, greetings from Warsaw, Poland ;)

John McLaughlin's main influence was Tal. Hearing him discuss how he see's the fretboard and intervals relative to the root note is great. He is both intuitive and analytical without effort.

My favorite recording of yours! Good to see it posted again. I studied with you at NGW in CT back around 2004ish? Bought your CD with this on it. Still have it somewhere. Glad to see you still making the guitar world better with all you do. Thank you.
