Why strip all the insulation back only to add heat shrink & reinsulate. Am I missing something? Only reason I can guess is it make the wires a little more pliable? Why not cut down the middle of the two wires once the inner jacket is exposed (taking care not to cut into section exposing either of the 2 wires, if you do then use heat shrink)...? Seems like you're stripping the cables out only to have to reinsulate. Understand the concept though - getting 2 wires out to connect to power source and also keeping them apart & insulated away from each other. Also, seems like we have a lot of people here who watch 70's porn (or did at one time) lol.

I had a cut heat tape (all three wires were cut not exposed like stripped but heat tape was cut in half) . Not my setup but if I had to guess I would go with crappy harbour freight stuff .So it was energized ( while it was cut in half stupid I know ) on a gfi and plunked into water and I saw a tiny short and of course gfi popped instantley. *** Did I fry this heat tape beond repair ? *** Didnt smell anything burnt would the thermostat have fried ? Appears to be what looks like a fuse link a foot away from the plug end about the size of a AA battery but its not no way to open it guess its the thermostat would I hv cooked that thing ? Important as the other end is frozen in ice while water is pissing everywhere else its not supposed to so I really that I really need to heat that up. Help appreciated important

There is a polymer between the wires throughout the cable. The conductivity of this polymer changes as the temperature changes. Colder = more conductive = more heat. Hence self regulating. Electrical current takes the path of least resistance. If the end wires were touching you would have a dead short.

Do the ends touch, is the wire exposed after you cut the notch, does the tape diaper prevent competition of the current? That is the most important part but the only unclear part. Please help.

What has been accomplished here ? No thermostat ? And unless wires at end of tape at V notch are assured to be connected - --. No circuit --- no heat

Outstanding Video. You possess outstanding elex skills and your processes are easily at aircraft electrician level. Not knowing much about the function f the core material I'm wondering why the core is stripped back then essentially replaced with heat shrink? Is the core material a resistor? Could multiple heat cables be installed so long as the power supply wire and breaker is large enough to handle the wattage?

I seriously hope you are joking about this guy being a skilled electrician. Calling the black wire the neutral, applying an illegal crimp on the ground crimp ring, and using tools that no good electrician would ever use unless those were the only options available. Like you, I was wondering why one would completely strip the core and then replace that factory applied insulation with heat shrink tubing. But upon some investigation, I found that this is the method instructed by the manufacturer, therefore that is how it is supposed to be done.

The time it could take to do this setup, a person could install a ReadyTemp ATC3000 under their sink and have intermittent warm water circulate throughout their hot and cold water pipes to prevent pipes from freezing. No annual inspection like heat tape. Installation takes all of 20min to connect four hoses and plug the unit into power.

I think this is intended more for industrial use heat trace systems. NOT home use. Very few people use heat tracing in their homes I would think.

These heated wires are to prevent ice dams in your gutters in the winter. I have them the length of my gutter on the back of our home that always has huge icicles even after we added more insulation to the house. That part faces west and on sunny days and cold nights ice was always a problem. Very good and clear directions in this video! Mine work!
