Good luck with the test. Sounds like you’d benefit from an eye exam and prescription glasses. How long since your last dilated eye exam. I’d recommend you make an appointment with your optometrist.

He recommended me to buy a pair of Foster Grants non prescription eye glasses to only use in aiding my close up vision when reading small print. Other than that he said I did well on all tests. However, 5 years ago, I went to see an Optometrist, who gave me a prescription for eye glasses. I bought them, and every time I wore them, I was not able to see well. My eyes were actually, getting weaker and I was over straining them. Shortly, after about 2 months, I was visiting Niagara Falls, and threw them into the falls. I had paid $400 for those glasses, and who knows what shore they ended up floating on.

Bioptic telescopic glasses work very well for ocular Albinism. I have helped quite a few of them maximize their eyesight.

DMV California the other day, I failed the wall chart 20/40 vision test then she had me on this machine, Optec 1000 eye tester, I could read then clearly and passed.

The glasses that help Stephen see better would not be helpful to someone with hemianopsia. Stephen has Stargardt disease which is a very different condition than hemianopsia. There are glasses that help with hemianopsia but I don't know if they are available in your country. They use prisms to make the wearer aware of objects to the blind side. That is a different type of prism than the prismatic reading glasses described in the video. Ask your eye doctor if there are low vision doctors near you who can help. Good luck

There is nothing that will correct homomymous hemianopsia. Some types of prism glasses allow people to be aware of objects in the blind field. I do not know how to access them in your country. I'd ask your eye doctor if I were you.

Shirley, thanks for watching my video and for your question. I know that you want to drive legally and safely. Driving at night with reduced vision may not be a safe thing to do. The rules for driving with bioptic telescopic glasses are different for each state. Most states allow people to drive who have low vision from AMD and other conditions if they can meet the state's vision requirements for bioptic drivers. Some states do not allow people to drive with bioptics. As far as night driving goes, I am most familiar with the rules in Virginia where I practice. In Virginia if the person meets the vision requirements for driving with bioptics and passes the driving test while wearing them they are issued a daylight license. One year later, if they are able to see 20/40 with at least one eye, they can apply for a license allowing them to drive at night with the bioptics. They must pass a driving test given at night. I am going to discuss the process of becoming licensed to drive with bioptic telescopic glasses in an upcoming Low Vision School class. If you don't live in Virginia you will need to find out the rules for driving with bioptics in your state. That usually starts with a search on the DMV website. Another option is to IALVS.com, the website of the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists. You will find a list of the requirements for each state as well as a directory of low vision doctors. The doctors listed in your state will certainly know the answer to your question. In order to determine the proper power, design and magnification you will need to have a low vision evaluation. This is not something that can just be ordered. I'd recommend that you Google "low vision doctor". You may find a low vision optometrist close to you. Good luck.

I understand your frustration with having to deal with poor vision. Bioptic telescopic glasses are prescribed by a low vision doctor who evaluates the person's vision, considers their goals and prescribes appropriate low vision glasses. The result may be bioptics or some other type of low vision glasses. This requires that the doctor and patient are together for the evaluation. It cannot be done any other way. You may have an eyeglass benefit through your insurance that might pay part of the fee. Of course, that type of insurance is intended to help people who use regular eyeglasses, not the more complex and expensive low vision glasses. It might be a good idea to check with your insurance company.

The only way to help people with low vision is by doing a careful evaluation of their remaining vision. That cannot be done over the telephone.

Thanks for your comment. You raise a very important point. Most states, including Virginia where I live, allow people with reduced vision to drive while wearing bioptic telescopic glasses. The vision requirements are different than those to obtain a regular, unrestricted driver's license. A pamphlet from the Virginia DMV states that "DMV's goal is to allow individuals to drive for as long as they can safely operate a motor vehicle". Some people who are able to meet the vision requirements do not feel safe driving. They should not drive. I often tell my patients that driving is probably the most dangerous thing that most of us do. If you do not feel safe driving, you should not be driving. There are many people with Stargardt, macular degeneration and other eye conditions who are able to safely drive while wearing bioptic glasses. You have made a wise decision to leave the driving to other people.
