Dave. I’ve watched countless fishing videos… specifically trout from a canoe. By far, this is the best video I’ve seen in a long time. You get right to the point, and you clearly describe your rig (this is what so many other videos are missing)… your instructions are concise, and your personality is just awesome 😊. Keep making videos buddy… good ones are rare.

Great video enjoyed every minute. May I ask how long you cooked the trout for? Did you cook it for a certain amount of minutes on one side and flip it to cook it for a certain amount of time on that side How many minutes?
@NorthOntarioDave3 ай бұрын
It's going to be different for every fish - size, etc. And how well done you might like it. When the meat flakes off the bone, it's done.

FYI…. Bug dope and mono line do NOT mix very well. I’ve learned that In the school of hard knocks living near Lk Superior on the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan. As a matter of fact, most bug dopes eat through mono fairly quickly.
@NorthOntarioDave3 ай бұрын
I don't use mono. White 10 pound braid is my main line on most of my setups. Some have moss green braid depending on where and what I'm targeting.

Cool video but aren’t you concerned about safety if you did run into a moose or a bear that isn’t afraid of humans? How do you protect yourself up there?

Super fun exciting video! I love jumbo perch! I was going to ice fish Superior for the first time ever this winter but I got nervous from the mild el nino weather. It just sketched me out too much. Maybe next winter I'll get you to guide me to some Superior perch!!!! Great stuff Dave!

Joe, when you make it over this way we are definitely gonna have some fun with whatever is chompin at that time. And lookin forward to when that happens!

@NorthOntarioDave could have very well been this spring but because the Airlines messed up our trip to the arctic last summer we have to use our vacation time again this year for the same trip. I should have lots of days off for 2025.... tributary fishing.... perch fishing in the bay... we will make something work!

We get them where I am on Manitoulin Island routinely as big as that large one. They school up in late fall and my entire graph/screen is black due to the sheer numbers. We use a tried and true method - a small Jigging Rap, the lead type with treble on bottom. Drop it down to the bottom (25-35ft) and snap jig it up in pulses just like you would for walleye, except you're anchored in the middle of them. You catch one on almost every drop but only keep the larger ones. My PB is a big female I snap jigged that weighed 1.65lbs. Good to see you back, Dave
@NorthOntarioDave6 ай бұрын
Yeah man, they’re probably one of my favourite fish to chase on the ice just for the sheer numbers you can find.

Hey Dave, hope you're ok haven't heard anything from you in awhile. I suspect it may have to do with the fact that it's the middle of winter..lol. I'll be heading up there in spring, I'm only a few hours east of you. I just ordered a new Raven Helix 9.6ft steelhead rod for the spring opener. If our paths cross while I'm in the area I have some steelhead gear you're welcome to have if you think you can use it. I'll bring it with me and you're welcome to go over it. Take what you want, it's my way of giving back. Also, about 4 months ago I had asked what size (or make and model) of landing net you use. The hoop seems larger than normal and appears to be the right size for steel head. Unless you're 5ft 1" tall then it's likely a normal sized hoop..lol I have a similar but smaller one that works well for large and small brook trout. Thanks Dave

That looks like so much fun, and such a beautiful setting. I live in North Carolina, but I have fond memories of catching steelhead in the Au Sable river in Michigan when I was stationed there in the Air Force. Thanks for sharing this experience!
