I've got a shirt I've had since the 80s when I was a kid, it's a skeleton in a wetsuit in the water cutting a dudes throat with a cool knife and it says " SEALS" A CUT ABOVE THE REST. 😂

You know where the design came from? Us 80s kids who had those neon colored plastic toy knives that retracted into the handle when you would stab so it looked as if it was going in.. They would break and the blade would fly out. You could push it into the handle and let it go because it was under spring pressure! I used to do it as a kid and thought it would be cool if it was real. Someone ran with it! 😂

Leave it to the media to make a pocket knife sound like a nuclear bomb.

Its not the knife thats fascinating its the machinery they use that is specifically made for making them. People dont think about the "swiss clock" of machines that are used to make all this cool shit!

It may suck to lug around in combat but it's still a badass knife. The sheath and wire cutter are clever.

Mine were made in the USA. I've owned a lot of knives. I've kept both cold steel hunting knives. People that don't like them probably never had one.

I bought mine in the early '80s to carry as a concealed weapon in high school. It was stolen in '86 and just last month it came up on eBay for sale. Yup, after all these years I got my knife back. :)

Irony abounds as the M9 bayonet's image is the centerpiece of the US Army's Combat Action Badge.

I have a West German bayonet that fits an M-16. It is from the early 1980s. It is almost identical to the M9, but the handle is flat, it is longer, and there is a sharp edge on the top of the blade, after the saw portion. There is a small compartment on the hilt that can be opened with a 5.62/.223 round. Don't know what it is for. It has a hard sheath and also has the wire cutter. There is a screwdriver tip on the end of the sheath, and a long leather cord as a leg tie. It has the same wire cutter.

I want to add to the option of the corkscrew or the screwdriver that the swiss army equipment has been updated with the green soldier knife in 2008. This knife features a locked blade and a screwdriver instead of a corkscrew. However you can pick a red colored alternative which has a corkscrew instead, called the forester. And then there are thick knives that come with both the corkscrew and the philips head, for example the swiss champ

Some officer saw Rambo and decided to inflate his Officer Evaluation Report by getting the Army to use his crappy design to replace a bayonet that did what it was supposed to. I suspect kickbacks in the design awarding decision .

I bought my Gerber Mark II in 78 while at Benning. After watching half my classmates lose theirs by carrying it upside down strapped to their web gear (load-bearing suspenders), I kept mine in my ruck. I still have it in a drawer next to my alternate revolver.

The M9 is still in Use. It's only given to combat engineers. I was issued one during the iraq war. The main purpose is to cut wire and still have a bayonet.

This was a coveted item not despised. It was largely impractical but it is cool. I was Infantry and my brothers also wanted to get possession of one of these malicious bad boys to carry in their kit. It makes an impression down range.
