PPG; the same company that made the Allegheny River toxic - for decades.

Up until about 1920, the C&H had no engines. The PRR had control of the line from the mine to their tracks and the B&LE had control of the line from the mine to their tracks. If the PRR or B&LE had to take something on the other's side, they had to contact them for permission. After about 1920, the C&H would deliver the coal to the power plant, B&LE, & PRR but most went to the power plant. Also, their were a few smaller businesses along the line that were handled. the biggest of which was a sand plant that was where the Syria Shriners' property is currently. There was a smaller disaster in 1936 with a few other people losing their lives. It was on a weekend and only a few company workers were in the mine.

Thanks for the video tour of the brewery. The closest I have gotten to the brewery was Williamsport, Pa. I was able to purchase some Straub beer in upstate Pa. It was a good beer and I like that it was made innPennsylvania by a small family owned brewery. If I ever get up near the town I will try and stop by and enjoy a fresh brewed beer.

The irony of it all is, Bennett supply, the one rail serviced industry who wasn’t part of the original A.I.D. plan, is the only one still using rail service.

Did some of the track run through below Ray Geisers gas station? I was very young then but still remember seeing a trestle in that area and one near Catanese garage. 5:43

As subterranean SW Pa is riddled with old coal mines, so the landscape above it is crisscrossed with old railroad track beds, through the back yards and waste spaces unknown to the new inhabitants. Great presentation, thanks for sharing all your work! This kind of material industrial history is a real source of inspiration for railroad modelers like me.

Facing south, at 1:56, the gravel area to the Right was the location of the Red Raven Station (Also known as River Valley/Harmerville). You can find an image of the first station from before 1917. In the image, you can see the simple Gabled roof station with a PRR Boxcar beside it and the four house on Gulf Lab road in the picture behind it. When the BLE Alleghany River Valley Bridge was replaced in 1917/1918, the roadbed was raised and a new traditional Hip Roof station was built. There is a single image of the second station from 1959, the picture was taken facing north, you can clearly see the existing tracks, with that funny curve in the secondary track and a sign stating "Red Raven" on the station.

What is your guess at the approximate length and width of this schoolhouse? Trying to figure out if a structure of this size could have been situated on a flat spot bordering my property.
@rossyco195
@rossyco195 10 ай бұрын
Eerie, amazing that it's still standing. I found out that a schoolhouse used to border my family's property in West Virginia. The lot was deeded to the county board of education in 1869 and the school was gone by 1905. So now I am searching KZbin to try to imagine what the schoolhouse might have looked like. I think it was a small frame structure similar to this 1876 schoolhouse, but unfortunately no photos exist that I know of. Thanks for sharing.

Good job, well planned Well detailed, you even mentioned the correct way to wind the tape 😂 Further improvements can be: 1- if you made that shelve a little bigger it will help you remove the holding tank (for cleaning puposes) without disturbing the pressure tank on the top Or maybe you can remove one of the legs but you would know if that would still be stable or not... 2- cleaning the tank more often might save costs on the 2 filters after the holding tank 3- it is a small tank so this might not be applicable here: the higher the suction of the 2nd pump from the bottom of the tank, the less sedimentation the pump will suck in... but the higher the water level needs to be so that the pump does not run dry or get air locked. This can be done by raising the float which signals the well pump to run (i.e. it runs earlier) & it seems you already have enough water to do that 4- you have 2 pumps in the system Obviously the well pump has to be of a larger capacity compared to the 2nd pump so that it can cope with demand & in order for the 2nd pump not to run dry

"CANAL" Street's in the river valley towns...... I was told as a kid that they filled in the canals...the right of ways became the RAIL BEDS for the railroads in the river valleys on the flood plains.....what a grand lost resource that would be "repurposed" today.....

I was waiting for Big Foot to appear......reminds me of running around in the woods when I was a kid......and exploring. Where was this at in the valley ? Is this still up through the hollows above Creighton ? I used to take a "walk" break between class's when I went to PSNK.....sort of reminds me of the terrain between the campus and Greensburg Road as it goes down hill through the hollows there in a way..... I live on the opposite side of Allegheny county now and I see just about EVERY CRITTER in the world.....except Sasquatch....but I think I did see one off the Montour Trail heading towards the town of Lawrence...where they do have sightings hahaha. BUT that's is one of the differences that 30 miles by how the crow fly's .....I don't remember seeing an abundance of wildlife in the valley woods as opposed to here in the south.....in the past.....or my past I should say....

Wasn't there one that sat along the river on the river side of the tracks going in to Harmarville and the bridge piers there before the turnpike...there used to be a factory type industrial building that in my time was all beat and abandon...and it was next to it abandon for YEARS as I grew up. My Dad had a business and we had to go into Pittsburgh often so I traveled with my Dad many times going to town on the old river roads when the Upper Valley section of new RT 28 was YET to be built....and thee "Missing Link". Things often fascinated me as I watched out the windows rolling down the roads.......and things that ARE NOT THERE anymore hahaha...true history !!

My mother's Grandfather & Father was sent over from Europe...think Ukrainian/Polish/Slovak as the borders always changed in the Astro-Hungarian Empire.....to Preach to the Slovaks that came here to Creighton to work in the Glass industry as they recruited employees in the Glass Artisan regions in Europe to import over here to man the factories. They were Baptist Missionaries which I find odd in a way as you'd think Catholic or Orthodox from that region of the world. Culturally the Slovaks would work the factories in the winter and then go into the fields and farmed in the growing season...the ways of life there in Europe. My Dad's family was Italian.....southern Italian peasant farmers that came over for work....they had choice to go to North America or South America when they left HOME. AND HERE WE ALL ARE TODAY hahahaha at HOME..... I still remember the remains of the cement structures just above the GULF station in creighton as you'd go up into west Tarentum.....before RT 28 was finished with the "Missing Link".......and "Pugh Town" before the Road covered everything over and the route adjustment for the Burtner House.......wandering the woods as a kid growing up and finding the ruins in the woods while exploring..... WE WEREN'T COUCH POTATOES PLAYING VIDEO GAMES hahahaha

Excellent video ! I know your videos as local historian but never realized your also the Bob Villa of the AK Valkey!Lol!You had a good experienced crew also. I spent some time repairing 100 year old plus houses and picked up a few plaster tricks from some old time guys. When the ceiling plaster has loosened from the lathe and is hanging like a topographical map ,you can get short drywall screws and lightly screw the low spots back up against the lathe boards. Put lots of screws in and just try and firm them back up . Then you get some construction adhesive or an epoxy and spread it over the repair area. Let the adhesive tack up then trowel your base coat onto the adhesive . The drywall screws hold the plaster to lathe,the adhesive holds your repair plaster to the original plaster. I have repaired many old ceilings this way and some have been holding over 30 years now. I did an entire living room in a brick home in Perryville like this .The man had estimates of 12 K dollars to repair the plaster professionally . I used my method and his house sold with no problems ,looked good. That was on 1998 , the ceiling is still holding so far. I think I charged the guy 500 bucks .No it's not as good as pro plaster work but it's a good fix for acceptable results! I am looking forward to more of your exploration of local history . Thanks for your videos !
