Interesting history. Our language, Afrikaans also contains Malaysian, German, French, very little Portuguese, Scottish, and Gaelic, and naturally various African languages like Khoekhoe, Zulu, Xhosa. Dutch is the largest contributor at about 90%. Because Afrikaans consists of so many languages, it's quite easy to pronounce words from other languages that may pose trouble for most other speakers.

For the mere fact that I can understand a bit of Dutch it means Dutch people understand far more than me of Afrikaans. I am from South Africa and not white. 😅

95% van Afrikaans kom uit Nederlands, 200 tot 250 jaar gelede was Nederlands nog in sy suiwer vorm gepraat in Suid Afrika. 5% kom uit ander tale of nuwe woorde. Afrikaans is 'n mooi taal.

Wasn’t Afrikaans called “Kitchen Dutch” back in the colonial days? Only servants spoke it in the kitchen.

I'm English South African and I was reading the English captions but hearing the Dutch and I could understand large parts of it like Afrikaans. 😅. I think it's much easier to understand Dutch if you know a bit of Afrikaans but maybe not the other way round as said. To me Dutch sounds alot more like German Afrikaans.

I learned German then lived in NL. I never formally learned Dutch. If you know German and English it is possible just to kind of pick Dutch up through immersion. When I speak 'Duitch' (see what I did?) Dutch people sometimes ask if I'm South African. Yes, Dutch and Afrikaans are largely mutually intelligible. It does depend somewhat on dialect for me as a non native speaker. The kind of standard, clearly enunciated Afrikaans spoken on South African TV is quite intelligible. The dialects I've heard spoken are much less so, though I gather native Dutch speakers can even understand these quite well. I also think the dialects of Dutch from the Southern Netherlands and Flemish are more similar to Afrikaans than the Northern varieties. In fact I had a customer from s'Hertogenbosch in Brabant amd when he spoke English his accent sounded really South African. Quite different from the classic Dutch accent.

On holiday met a Southafrican couple. We agreed to speak slowly to eachother, and we noticed we could understand eachother. Sometimes I didn't recognize a word, but I could infer the meaning from the other words.

@jankeizer407 5 күн бұрын
In the Dutch province of Friesland and Noord-Holland there are dialects spoken that are similar to each other. One of these is "Bildts" which is my language. Het Bildt is made land in the north west of Friesland, bediked by dutch and flemish (not frisians) and the these old dutch languages are in mainparts very similar to Afrikaans. Most notacible is the ending of "sie" "sy" which had completely died out in in the old Hollandish languages except for Het Bildt en provence of Utrecht. Also sk is used and we do not use and pronounce the letters Z (=S) and C (=K) and also V (=F). Most beautiful Bildts word is "Maisy" which means young girl. ending Y is always used in words that mean to make it little. For example "Huus" which means House and Hússy means small house. Other example is "argyf" which is Bildts for argive (in dutch archief). Our language is documenten in a Bildts Woordenboek. Also spelling and there are lessons being given. Approx 6.000 - 12.000 speakers. The language/dialect is seriously being threatened by maindutch. Besides this many words are similar to English such as train/train.

Ik denk er is een grammaticale fout wanneer Linus stelt zichself voor. Hij zei "We staan vandaag in Utrecht en hebben vandaag met de mensen gesproken over vriendschap en hoe je vrienden kunt maken". Maar het zou zijn: "... en hoe kunt je vrienden maken". Hoofdzin + hoofdzin

Just a correction. Afrikaans was recognised as an official language in South Africa in 1925! Dutch wasn't used officially after that. My grandfather was born in 1907 and he still had some of his schooling in Dutch mixed with Afrikaans. Dutch hasn't been an official language of SA for 100 years!
