I wish they had a 2-piece strap option. That watch will look nicer on a 2-piece vintage leather strap. Ended up getting the Baltany W10 at $158. Can't really beat the price and date complication.

I really like my W10. Quite accurate!

I have a W10, no idea who made it as the dial is sterile and the back just has the Nato stock number. Last digits are 1891/91 so probably made in 1991 but I didn't think they were still being made for military issue that late.

MWC is better. Screw down crown, always sapphire crystals, every model in automatic or in quartz. C3 lume or tritium tubes all this for good prices.

Pobeda 34K. First watch in space. Strapped to a dog named Chernushka..was Dr. Genin's watch. Powered by a Pobeda 15 jewel small second movement. 2nd watch in space was lent to Yuri Gagarin. Used a Type 2 aka 17 jewel Sportivnie movement.

I like modern parts on reissues but nothing beats the genuine feeling of wearing with the same size, look, and parts material to the original watch. It's akin to a time travelling experience for me.

When NASA spend millions to make pen to write in space, the russian write with a pensil. The Russian made a simple watch for any use and rebuilt it after many years and sale it under 500 euro, the same time the american rebuild the Omega watch complicate it and sale it over 3000 euro. What you think?

In 1963 my father bought a Russian hand-wound watch that was advertised as being exactly the same type that Gagarin wore. Surprisingly, it wasn't waterproof, had luminous batons and numbers that really glowed brightly in low light but, as I remember itl, wasn't particularly accurate.

Buy the tooling. Continue making them. Irony. What if an American manufacturer buy s the tooing . Makes watches using Russian tooling, also the move.ents yo Russia? That is irony. For now they are going swiss or Chinese or Japanese.... Vostok and a few others still make their own movements in Russia.

I've got the titanium model with the same cream dial. I seriously never noticed that the hands were blued. I usually wear it on a slightly worn leather strap or a black NATO for the authentic look.

The name sturmanskie is also interesting. The name is originally Dutch; stuurman. Around 1700 the Russian tsar Peter the Great modernised Russia, and also its navy. To have first hand knowledge he went undercover to then one of the biggest seafaring nations, the Dutch to learn shipbuilding skils. He stayed in Zaandam in a small cottage, that still exits today as a museum. Afterwards he hired a lot of Dutch naval experts, so a lot of naval terminoligy is of Dutch origin. Stuurman is translated litarally into English as steerman or more broadly as coxwain or first mate, part of their duties is navigation, therefor navigator.

Great review, and a great watch! I'm keeping an eye out for a Sturmanskie as my next watch. I hadn't really considered Russian / Soviet watches before, mainly because of Swiss tunnel vision. I did buy a German Stowa Flieger Klassik 40 in 2018 and sold it last month (for a profit, not bad!), and came upon vintage Soviet watches by accident in the process. A few days after the Stowa sold, I impulse purchased a vintage Pobeda with a sweet art-deco inspired cushion dial, thinking it could be a nice decorative piece to add some cool history and aesthetics to my collection. Well I received it 9 days ago and it hasn't come off the wrist since. It is a solid watch with serious charm, and holy shit, its precision so far is outperforming the Rolex and Omegas in my collection. My Explorer II has been running around -1 per day which is phenomenal...but so far the Pobeda is running at an astonishing +/- 0 per day. Every day for the last 9 days. I'm absolutely perplexed, but revelling in my luck. I don't know how a $40 vintage piece from the Soviet Union outperforms a much newer, well taken care of $7,000 Swiss machine. But so far it is, and it's definitely piqued my curiosity about Soviet / Russian timepieces.

I bought a cheaper pilot-style watch from poljot sturmanskie, with the same logo on it, wings, star and bomb. Just recently also bought a raketa copernicus, also not very expensive (100 Euro), Next one will probably be a strela cosmos... I'm a fan of the cyrillic lettering, it makes it look a bit like 'alien' technology... there's also the scubadude (vostok amphibia).
