Im honestly just a doordasher who really enjoys driving my Matrix XRS with the exact same philosophy you guys have on this engine + build strategy and Im so happy I came across this seminar to reinforce those ideas. Im really glad there is such a massive expert community for this engine. But I didnt see you guys go into detail about intake manifold, runners, plenum or throttle body. Do you guys feel that increasing the bore or volume in those areas puts the system out of balance and thats why you keep it stock? I'm shooting for daily delivery vehicle/showcar/occasional track/camper hatchback with electric AC conversion -- just to get an idea of where I'm coming from. Wild, I know. But fun and enjoyable and worthy.

Lotus drivers and owners don’t want electric. I’m a exige , espirit and 91 owner. I don’t want electric, it kills the brand and passion. Electric is not the future. Let the brand die with dignity
@InoKinetic9 ай бұрын
You own some great examples that show the companies heritage and passion for drivers. They are being forced into EVs but that should not stop them from delivering EVs designed for drivers. I've owned a dozen Lotus and I want to see them evolve and survive - not die!

I think Lotus should keep the Elise and federalize it alongside the Emira and introduce the EV CUV as an affordable option ($60-70k) and not in a super car price point. Nobody buys a Cuv to be cool, and Lotus need to earn their customers trust when it gets to a practical daily. People shopping for a Cuv won’t shop online for replacement parts in England.
@MrBubs-yu4wm10 ай бұрын
Agreed about continuing some kind of offering that satisfies the original customer base - those of us who want modern solutions for lightweight, simple, connected sports cars. Continuing production for and federalizing the S3 Elise seems like a good way to do that for the near future. No one would mind the new EVs if they simply added them to the lineup instead of replacing the kinds of cars that made the company great
@InoKinetic10 ай бұрын
Macan sales are aspirationally driven purchases that also tick the practicality box. So there is one successful example of a cool CUV. A smaller Lotus CUV is coming - possibly built in South Carolina alongside the Volvos and Polestar CUVs....at least that seems like a smart place to keep the costs down and build in the region that has fallen for CUVs...
@InoKinetic10 ай бұрын
@@MrBubs-yu4wm The cost to Federalize a car is so astronomical that low volume cars (like the Elise) are financially impossible. You could only do this as a loss leader. Hence the importance of having volume cars that deliver cash flow...and allow for loss leaders.
@MrBubs-yu4wm10 ай бұрын
@@InoKinetic makes sense. I wonder why a car like the Elise couldn’t sell in volumes like the Miata? You’d think there would be enough demand that it could sell at volume and not have to be a loss leader. Were US sales of the S2 Elise limited more by demand or production capacity? And how was the Elise ever in the US if it was uneconomical?
@InoKinetic10 ай бұрын
@@MrBubs-yu4wm Elise price is twice has high as Miata so sales volume will be lower. Lotus sold 5k cars in the first two yrs of sales in the US and then only sold 2k more cars in the next 5yrs because demand dropped off. Lotus had plenty of capacity. Once the pent-up demand was met, the sales dropped to the natural take rate for a car - which is low for such a focused car.
@OobliHD10 ай бұрын
Lotus will fall. Calling it now. If they want to kill off the Elise, Exige, and their history they can, but it's no longer Lotus. Geely has put the nail in the coffin.
@InoKinetic10 ай бұрын
The old Lotus was not financially viable. This one may be. Geely have done wonders with Volvo/Polestar so blaming them for an impending Lotus failure is a false prediction.
@OobliHD10 ай бұрын
@@InoKinetic Well sure they'll survive. But at what cost? Switching from lightweight performance cars to heavy EV SUVs means they are only keeping the Lotus name. “Simplify, then add lightness.”
@InoKinetic10 ай бұрын
@@OobliHD Lightweight performance cars have not allowed them to financially exist. This is a dead end and has nearly killed them over and over again. Look at how many times they have been sold. Entering a larger market will deliver revenue. Hopefully it will be enough to allow them to make lighter versions of EVs - the reviews of the Eletre suggest they are performance oriented. I'm holding out hope that their LEVA will deliver the lighter weight and driving dynamics that we are want - but they need cash flow to see this happen.
@ThorOdinson-zc2kq9 ай бұрын
@@InoKineticmismanagement, quality control and cross platform usage of underwhelming poor parts has been their past downfalls. Ie Renault transmissions in the 3.5 twin turbo, rover engine in the series one, and wiring issues galore in the 70s. The cash flow was successful using Toyota powertrains. Dependable so they can focus on handling and weight management. Your lotus customers want a unique focused sports car. The brand will fail mass producing junk no one wants. I buy my lotus cars for the track not everyday usage. Point two- the grid will never be available for electricity. I’m an industrial electrical engineer. I’m part of the development of grid design. We aren’t improving anything. We can barely maintain the existing grid on the East coast and mid west in my company. Electric hikes are to purchase used capacitors and keep linemen crews available. We don’t have new workers to replace exiting people that are retiring. That is the reality the media isn’t telling you. Pa division of met Ed just invested 50 million in upgrading their diesel trucks. Diesel. Ev is not the future, regardless of what the government tells you. They don’t set the policies- our company does.

Frankly I think Colin has been turning in his grave since the day Lotus stopped racing on the world stage. He only really sold road cars to support his racing. I think if he were still running the company, he would fully be embracing whatever financial avenue he could to continue racing in F1, WEC, WRC even (Talbot Lotus)...
@InoKinetic10 ай бұрын
I agree that he was willing to do what it took to race. Sadly racing is so expensive that few companies have trul been able to do it cost effectively. You are not kidding regarding the difficulty in getting tires. In early winter, I could not find the tires you mentioned. I waited for almost 2 months. I added Bridgestone RE71RS to my search and luckily was able to find a set they just got in and I had them within a week. After I received them I also finally got the Hoosiers I had ordered almost 3 months ago by then. Anyway, the Bridgestone made for some really fun, awesome grip, winter track and street tire. Now during the summer I’ll be back to Hoosiers. I’ll be happy to try to get the Bridgestones again next winter. Finally, your message about old tires is very important. There is a significant drop off in grip after five years, no matter how good they look. I even videoed and posted my experience with 10 year tires and another with old Hoosiers at the track. Skate fest and not in a fun way like you might think. Lots of understeer, no grip at all, and less predictable than healthy tires. Thx for the vid!
