My grandparents lived in Wells, and we'd stay in their house for a couple of weeks in this lovely city when they went away on their summer hols. Looks like there's been some developments and expansion in the ~60 years since 😕

Cut back on paying the monarchy to repair these properties.

you should do more research on the monarchy. there is very substantial returns to the country from having them, valued much more than the "grant" they receive from the government.

The monarchy is actually at the heart of funding and raising funding. King Charles has been especially involved with restoration projects (historically correct), and has even founded a school for people to learn the historic trades and crafts necessary to complete and keep historic restorations. Without the money the monarchy brings in, none of that would be possible. I envy you Brits having so much history and a family dedicated to providing public service and encouraging preservation. Do you really think any of that money sifted through politician’s hands would make it to those projects, or early childhood development, or homelessness? Look what they did with the NIH and the postal service.

Grade I I'd think they'd it would be mandatory to keep them in top condition. They are utterly gorgeous even in poor condition, can't imagine what they will look like when rehabbed.

There's a video on the Wells Cathedral KZbin channel that shows the interior from a year ago -- it shows the poor condition of and damp of the buildings. They were/are trying to repair the buildings: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIWadGinp7t3msUsi=Vc13KbCOsmgqNLCk

They should wreck these shabby, old buildings and replace them with modern 1960s adjacent buildings made out of concrete slabs!

In all seriousness, it's ridiculous that this is claimed as the oldest surviving street when there would be a lot more if they didn't deliberately demolish them, or refuse to rebuild the streets destroyed in the war

Having seen this video this morning (1st March, 2024) I went to see this installation at the cathedral this evening. Whilst the projections were impressive in themselves, how was it possible for the sound to be so unbelievably bad? The recordings of the various anthems and other speech were so muffled and unintelligible. I stood next to the various PA speakers as well as the everyday regular in-house column speakers, and the source recordings were equally bad as the other. I have to assume this was wholly intentional as it could not possibly have been attributed to the cathedral's acoustic. 😡🤬

I've been both grieving and focusing on Christmas Carols. I don't know if you guys are going to deal with another of Rutter's pieces. His Candlelight carol is appropriate for the point of both. My brother passed away just over a week ago! And that's been preoccupying me - most definitely! I have been listening to this carol! And it's given me some comfort.

I am so delighted to see that you are opening some of the houses to the public. My grandmother lived there as a child before her father was snapped up to go to South Carolina. I love Wells Cathedral and have always felt a strong connection, probably due to the family connection. I look forward to looking around the houses.

It wasn't easy for any of us - at the time. It was upsetting but now we're back in our shared responsibility to lead services. I understood the matter well! It was a long time to be stuck with it as we were. I understand that well.

There are suggestions here in the words that cause we to wonder if the song writer had time to speak with Her Majesty before beginning the process. Strong values come up in these words.

The local church choir I sing with got lumbered with singing this yesterday. Truly awful piece which none of the choir liked. Two members of the choir gave up during rehearsals as they could not stand it. Wish I had. This was commisioned by the Royal College of Church Music for the Jubilee but was not sung at St Pauls or Windsor castle chapel!

It was sung at St Paul's in a different service actually!!! I'm so sorry you didn't like it but respect your opinion. Wells' stunningly beautiful recording of it literally made me well up. This anthem has been taken up by around 700 choirs all over the commonwealth and has meant a huge amount to so many, and has without doubt been a huge and universal success for the Royal School of Church Music, who commissioned it from me to celebrate their Royal Patron, QEII. This above comment just goes to show that you can't please everyone all the time - but I know as writer that the piece has integrity for what it was aiming to do. All best, with respect - Thomas Hewitt Jones

@@thomashewittjones Thank you for composing this anthem for the historic occasion. It captures the words of The Queen most beautifully, and reflects Her Majesty's values of service and compassion. I sang that at Wells Cathedral in the choir of Te Decet Hymnus on the Jubilee Sunday, and thought it most touching.
