Great show! I listened to all of your podcasts and I would love to suggest a show that no one has covered yet, which was the release and impact of the Beatles coming to the Compact Disc format in 1987. It’s wild how this hasn’t been a topic anywhere, but I know it was a huge deal back in the day. The music stores, the news stations, people lining up to get these CDs. And why the first 4 albums were released in mono. It would be an interesting historical look back. Was it Beatlemania 2.0 or was that with the Anthology in 1995? IDK. Anyway thank you for the Beatle discussions.

Speaking of what you got into around 25 minutes in…YES, the Lennon 1970 RS interview and its aftermath skews so many views on McCartney in the 70’s and to this day I still see folks quoting it as if its the bible on the subject! It’s ridiculous, even reading it as a 16 year old when that interview came out I knew Lennon was spewing a combination of resentment and wildly exaggerated hyperbole…very glib statements that were obvious nonsense interspersed with some interesting info on the Beatles. We know of course he refuted or contradicted a lot of the statements soon after but folks seem intent on making it the GOSPEL OF JOHN!

enjoyed the book tremendously - great research and outstanding content - the only issue with the book is that the writing was rushed and they missed several things that are essential to the story - first - they missed documenting the call that John made to Paul upon the death of his father jim - later - this resulted in a call that paul made to john upon the death of freddy lennon in early April 1976 - which set up the April 24th meeting - this is common knowledge and part of Chip madingers book - they also missed the xmas call that Paul and John had in late 1979 - all in all - its a good book but those significant issues needs to be fixed for future revisions -

This made me sad; it was an unnecessarily ost opportunity, sacrificed at the altar of Apple's marketing department. Most of the talking heads were not additive to the story and '64 was such a momentous year for the band that a wider lens encompassing that whole year (for which there is more than adequate archival material) would have made a much more satisfying document. I'm amazed that this got endorsed by Paul, Ringo, Sean and Olivia.

Where was the archive interviews with Neil Aspinall and Cynthia Lennon. It does make me wonder if next year there is going to be a cleaned up Anthology with extended versions of all eight episodes.

The main thrust of this doc was how people reacted to the Beatles coming in 1964. The problem with the whole thing was how it was structured and the way they got material in the present, and just filling time.

Great review. It was so awful and so horrid. You guys really did a fantastic job on lazy narrative bad film making and horrid talking heads. Love to see you telling Apple that they are absolutely garbage and the documentary is absolute horse shit. You owe the fans to say it’s garbage and shit. 💩
@Beatletoon29 күн бұрын
We really hate being so critical of anything Beatles related because that means the fans didn’t get what could have been something special. But we are always honest.

It was literal garbage. Filled with inaccuracy Unlike other podcasts it was refreshing to see you guys hold nothing back in your honest and direct review. Apple and Disney are garbage and a travesty to beatle fans. Smokey Robinson is too senile and drug addicted to tell an accurate story which is a disgrace The only true friend to Beatle hard core fans is Peter Jackson. David Tedesci and Ron Howard are awful custodians of Beatle legacy. Awful putrid
@michaelf9693Ай бұрын
I agree with everything that was said. A lot of missed opportunities. I was hoping to see footage I haven’t seen before but that was few and far between. Like with Eight Days A Week, they built it up like it was going to be something the hard core fan would enjoy but then the talking heads come in taking up way too much time and you realize they’re playing loose with the time line or the footage and you realize it really is for a more casual fan who’s not going to question it. And that’s fine. It was enjoyable enough for a watch.

Thanks for the very good review, my father and my stepmother bought me all of the episodes on VHS in 2001 not long after they were released and John and Yoko were outspoken about feminism and John was very supportive of feminism too and the second wave of feminism was at the time still pretty recent and totally misunderstood and misjudged as ''crazy'' which sadly it still is to a certain extent, so it was very brave and important for John who was very influential and popular with many young people both female and male, to do this. Was this included in this program ? I really hope so. One episode had New York lawyer Rina Uviller who became a judge years later for the New York county supreme court.Mike Douglas said that he was often approached by many youmg people including men saying this was his best shows ever and his ratings were the highest they had ever been. And just months later he and Yoko's even more brave and blunt feminist song Woman Is The N****r Of The World was released and banned off of many radio stations and John and Yoko mostly John, bravely performed it with his Elephant's Memory band on The Dick Cavet show in May of 1972 and then he performed it live at Maddison Square Garden in August of 1972 for The One To One concert to help raise money for retarded children and adults. And another episode had feminist actress Barbara Loden on talking about her recent pro-woman feminist film Wanda and I think it was said on the show ( I haven't watched them in many years) that it was John's idea to have her on I think it might have been Yoko who said this.Barbara sadly died in September of 1980 from breast cancer at only age 48 just 3 months before John's horrible crazy murder.

The inaccurate comment about The early Beatles not being ''macho'' is pretty funny considering the fact that in their personal lives during their early touring years 1963-1966 they had sex with tons of young women groupies and many were the teen girls ( as all rock bands did and do) screaming in their concerts. And John said in his very last radio or any interview on December 8,1980 that he came from the macho school of pretense. He said that a boy is mainly brought up like to be in the army, and he said he knows it's more like this in England than over here,but there's still this macho ethic of don't touch,don't feel,don't cry don't react and not express emotions and he said that's what screwed us all up and he said he thinks it's time for a change. And very much thanks to Yoko's feminism he became a whole full person not only a half of one anymore and that's what freed him and changed him 180% for the better into an outspoken proud pro-feminist and nurturing house husband to Yoko and their little son Sean. In a great article in The Nation,Lennon's Last Interview:The Sixties Showed Us The Possibility by Jon Wiener, he said in John's last radio interview by Dave Sholin of RKO Radio (and this was hours before John was tragically killed by the one time big Beatles fan since he was 11,and John had been his favorite Beatle) Dave asked John about feminism and John said, ''I'm more feminist now than I was when I sang Woman Is The N***** Of The World.'' in this article John is then quoted saying,' 'Isn't it time we destroyed the macho ethic? Where has it gotten us all of these thousands of years? Are we still going to have be clubbing each other to death? Do I have to arm-wrestle you to have a relationship with you as another male? Can we not have a relationship on another level?'' Also a great 2010 Huffington Post article by long time anti-sexist,anti-men's violence,anti-pornography educator former all star high school football player and author of the great,important 2006 book,The Macho Paradox:How Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help, Jackson Katz.John Lennon on Fatherhood,Feminism,and Phony Tough Guy Posturing

It is inaccurate comments such as the one you noted, and from greats like Smokey, which is why I really feel that the great footage should have driven the narrative by itself. We didn't need ANY talking heads!

I was in 3rd grade in 1963-64, and I was immediately taken with the Beatles. While I was certainly aware of Kennedy's death, in my 3rd grade awareness, I was *not* in a protracted funk over it! I don't know what age group was in this alleged despondency, but it wasn't my grade school classmates. We responded to the music, not to some postulated emotional relief!

I honestly had no interest in watching it because I knew what it was going to be. If new Beatles fans want to watch a good documentary about the band, have them watch “The Beatles Anthology” or read the book. JFK’s assassination was a tragic loss and a cataclysmic moment in history, but so was 9/11. How come we didn’t have any great band after 9/11? The Beatles were destined to make it in America whether President Kennedy was alive or dead. I don’t know if he would have been a Beatles fan. He was more of a Sinatra guy, but he probably would have been cordial and said nice things about them. Terence Trent D’Arby or Sananda Maitreya. Ok…I guess Rick Astley wasn’t available? With all due respect, I fail to see the connection. The more I watch and listen to Paul and Ringo, the more I miss John and George because their absence is increasingly evident. We get the same stories over and over again. Boring. We are allowed to be critical of The Beatles. If you want to listen to sycophants, there are plenty of other KZbin channels you can go to for that. You guys are great because you tell people what they need to hear, not what they want to hear. And not everyone wants to hear dissenting opinions. They want to hear “Oh, this documentary was great! Oh, I loved it!” Fine. That’s their opinion. We’re allowed to disagree.

I respectfully disagree. Most fans are really disappointed in this doc. And when the talking head talks about it being dark, he is referring to the music. And they never make mention of the less than rock music released before the Beatles arrived on the scene. And if you know us then you know we never take OURSELVES seriously. With all due respect, nobody is saying the assassination wasn’t a dark time or that the Beatles’ arrival wasn’t a bright light. The question is was there a connection? Were most young kids who were the initial core audience then still upset by Christmas 1963 through February 1964? I’d say they probably moved on from JFK. And most young adults to older parents probably didn’t see the Beatles as anything more than a new flash in the pan. Certainly not something that would have lifted their spirits in any meaningful way at that time.

The opinion usually was that the Parlophone releases sounded better than the Capitol records. Now, it seems this new set is not all analog? No thanks. I remember listening to the Parlophone stereo releases, which had digital in the production chain. The records sounded dead and flat. Covers and extras may be nice, but I'm only into vinyl for the sound, as long as its all analog.

Note to all from the admin: In general, all of you fans have made doing this show for these past 14+ years a lot of fun. As we have ALWAYS said, constructive criticism is always welcomed. Humorous, playful, teasing comments are always welcome. Obnoxious, harmful, personal or abusive digs and comments are not. We do this for the love of the music, and for the camaraderie. In our excitement to get this video done and get this info to you, certain video settings were not checked until it was too late. We were not happy about that, but our chase was to either give you a legitimate video or a 'simulated' re-shoot. As a result, the quality isn't what we wanted... but the content is. And guess what else (to someone who knows who they are)... I'm PROUD to be the age that I am, and to have the wisdom and knowledge that I have. As a professional lecturer and a podcaster, I am also proud to share it. YOU on the other hand, need to learn to keep your insulting comments to yourself and to grow up.

Cannot work out why they waited until this time of year to release it, maybe it should have been released half-way during the year, which would have made it sixty years after The Beatles broke the USA and before their first nationwide US Tour. Usually with releases like this, they do not come so close to solo reissues, so releasing a week after the reissue of Living In The Material World is odd.
