Quilts on point are my favorite. Thank you for demonstrating. Your method eliminates side setting triangles (which have SOG on the outside. Your beginners should know that the edges should be handled with care as they are on the bias and will stretch easily.

It's great to meet you. I'm Kathy from Atlanta. I started making quilts with my own designs back around 2000-2004 because there was no one around to teach me. Then for many years I made other people's patterns but I want to move back to making my own. I make a lot of donation quilts for my doctor to give her homebound and hospice patients and I think it would be fun to give them something special and unique. I look forward to seeing what you do with HSTs since I can't make them. Seriously. No matter what method, or what trimming ruler, they just don't come out right. So none of my quilts have ever had triangles in them. LOL

Hey TJ I find it is good to do a practice block also to find out how the fabric behaves. Not all fabrics is created equal. (Even quilt store fabric varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. ) IT takes time and fabric but saves time too. Extra blocks can always be made into a sample quilt or an orphan block project.

Hi TJ. I first say your how to iron strips. In all my years of sewing and quilting I have not seen the tip with the metal ruler. Now I need to head to my local hardware or autopro store. I've been sewing since a child. Continued throughout the years, clothes, doll clothes, quilts, art quilts, costumes for school plays, really anything sewing. I think I have tried alot of techniques. Right now I am not art quilting so much. I don't know what to do with them. Right now I quilt for gifts, charity and I really like improv. I think I just love to learn. I taught dying fabric and eco printing for awhile but it is hard on my back. So I just do for me and sometimes for friends. I appreciate your kindness and inclusion. While most quilters are very kind I do find that some have to be right or incharge. In my early 60's and I just want to enjoy making and creating. I have time now to do so. Looking forward to your channel.

@nursekate6772 Quilting decisions are so hard to make for sure. I will definitely admit to having several...... quilt tops that need to be quilted, so you're not alone there. What about trying another way of layering that is more satisfying, or you could always have a longarmer do it for you. Sometimes, we don't need to do every step ourselves. The real head scratcher is for some of the older machines. Someone noted, tension before take up....remembering that will help you figure the right path (because sometimes it is not obvious). I don't care for universal needles. I like to piece with Microtex, and I use a cottonized polyester (Decobob 80wt). It helps keep the bulk out of complex blocks.

@@tjwrightquilts I love it. I use Dove Grey, and you will not see it in blacks, navy, reds because it is both fine and strong. I used to use Aurofil, but I love the finer thread. I pretty nebbish, so I test "stuff" to find my preferences. I found (and initially believed) that there is cotton threads should be used exclusively for piecing and dismissiveness of polyester. I will never go back. I came to learn that some of the "old wives tales" about polyester were just that. Give it a try--a Microtex needle 75 or 80 will work well.

A test block BEFORE cutting everything is essential. I don't make many quilts from patterns. But for the few that I have, I generally go through and make notes particularly for using more time/fabric saving ways to construct the block than those written. My rule is to never make use two pieces when one will do (e.g. 2xHST to make a Flying Goose unit). Love the green/blue combo in the blocks.

Since I have just recently discovered , and subscribed to, your channel, I appreciate this introduction video. I am 55 years old, but only began quilting a little over 3 years ago, when I inherited my mom's sewing machine. I am somewhat self-taught, having learned quilting only through blogs and videos on KZbin. I am finding that quilting is truly fulfilling a dream that I didn't realize I had. That may sound strange, but it's true nonetheless. I also have found that the normal types of quilts (multiple, same-sized blocks of the same design) truly bore me. They do not inspire me at all. I also do not like visually busy quilts. Oddly, my favorite traditional quilt that I love to make is the 1-inch finished postage stamp quilt. And I do not like to make it in the modern way, but totally scrappy.... 1 1/2" block sewn to 1 1/2" block. 😂 Yes, it's time consuming, but the process and the finished product makes it worth it to me. So, as far as what I'm looking for in your future videos would be inspiration to do things that are not the norm. I love to make unusual, beautiful, and comforting quilts. I don't feel like my style really fits into a particular genre. My style is neither truly vintage nor modern (although I like some things out of both). I've truly enjoyed the few vidoes of yours that I have seen so far, and look forward to learning from you. 😊 ~Katrina

I was curious too so I found the manual for this Bernina 970 and looked at the buttons. That top one lit green (at 7:19 min) is called "start/stop" and it determines what position the needle is when you stop sewing. It has multiple functions depending on what you're doing, so not just needle position. Most machines (even cheap beginner ones) have this needle position feature.

Quilting techniques, like most things are "pay now or pay later". Best to Pay now as the price gets much higher later! I have a Bernina B530 (among others). I exclusively piece on that machine with the #57 gated foot. It is the best gated foot as it is not flimsy and will not bend AND the gate floats over crossing seams. My machine will allow me up to 2 clicks to the right and still stay within the straight stitch plate and the foot allowance. My perfect scant is 1 click to the right. My machine is just dumb enough to let me do this as it is an entry level in the 500 series. I can sew without thinking. (The higher level machines may not allow you to do any needle positions if it has a plate sensor and senses a straight stitch plate. My Juki Kirei is "smart" that way. I do not piece on that machine. My 48" metal ruler is a lifesaver in the room and on the ironing board when needed. Thanks for your demo.

Let me begin by saying that I discovered your channel today and have watched most of your videos. You do beautiful work, and I appreciate your teaching style. That said, I've hesitated mentioning this. It's like mentioning to a stranger that she has toilet paper stuck to her shoe. But here goes. In your videos, you use the word "taunt" often. The word should be "taut," not "taunt." They have 2 entirely different definitions. In this video especially (min 17:22-26), you stress/repeat that "..taunt is the key word here.." I am one who appreciates the stranger telling me about the toilet paper. I hope you are also. Btw, I especially admire this video's seascape art as I grew up at the shore and collected sea glass and other treasures. Thank you for the excellent tutorial.
