All I hear is: "We can no longer afford our foreign policies." Because we're skint but giving money away? That's got to be close to the definition of stupidity.

a lot of people are taking their wealth abroad as they clocked on to the scam. The UK government faces a tax shock like they've never seen before. in other words, those higher income earner that paid 45% tax are no longer in the UK and therefore no longer pay taxes to the UK. The UK will decline rapidly as Spain and Italy will grow. If the Spanish and Italian government force a huge increase in housing development then it might be able to protect its own citizens from price increases and therefore get the best of both world. increase in business creation and wealth with no negative affects of migration. However most western Politian's are corrupt and are bribed not to increase the development. and then as usual their people suffer for it.

If employers set minimum work loads which were reasonable and there also is software to track productivity then surely this could work for both parties involved . And also help with less emissions less working hours due to skipping the commute . And the employer doesn’t need a big office they heat year round

So far this Labour government has defined those who should be looked after as those on benefits and immigrants. The rest of us can go to hell. His comment when asked who he regarded as working class was “Anyone without savings”. Says it all. If you’ve worked hard, been prudent and saved you are a TARGET!

I have yet to see anyone provide any evidence for a decrease in productivity with people working from home. (spending less on transport and in shops seems to be the governments concern)

If your job offer isn't appealing, people won't apply. Really simple stuff. Having to option to do some jobs from home means nothing in this context.

Aboslute bollocks. Working from home isn't inactive 😂 I work from home, I am in shape due to having time to work out a little and can cook decent food on my break. Far more productive than I have been for a while. My boss treats me well, I work hard. Simple stuff really If people cant be happy working from home, they ARE the problem. They would have and issue working in an office or at home.

Libs dems focus is on pensioners. Free care for life, more money for NHS & local NIMBYism. No real policies to grow the economy or tackle the massive intergenerational equality caused by failing economy… just bribes for pensioners\votes.

Man alive. This guy has not toiled in the way the average wage labour individual has to. For clarity, there is hostility on both sides of this debate - and people arguing points between each camp from each pole. The frame of reference used here to underpin this analysis is not grounded in the experience of the average person. This can be boiled down to, capital is feeling squeezed and so it must be the problem of the worker. Capital don’t really want competition in the labour market. Increase in tribunals and arbitration is a signal that the employers are performing more poorly, not the worker. Dog whistle working from home, quiet quitting etc etc. Capital has utterly failed to innovate what work is and the experience of work for the worker.

On Britain’s so-called “work problem” Andrew Marr may be right that there is an atmosphere of “hostility” on the part of the economically inactive, though others might alternatively frame their economic plight as oppressed and precarious. Memories are long, and labour market behaviours and trends are the product of policy choices that the public intuitively understands better than policy wonks and politicians seem to think. I think the logical error being made in this line of argument is expecting people to switch off their collective memories after 14 years of austerity, employment precarity, inequality of outcomes and their disgust at our political leadership (including Starmer’s silence on Brexit). In a word, what is missing is trust. The negativity of messaging coming from our Labour government is surely not helping things. How can you ask people to do it for Britain when the messaging is things are going to get worse (read as more struggle and pain), Starmer is unwilling to bring in wealth taxes (read as unfair) and Reeves is unwilling to boost investment or depart from treasury orthodoxy (just incomprehensible). When economists and the media discuss “growth” they mean GDP. When the majority of the pubic, not being schooled in economics, think of growth it has a far more personal meaning that is both financial and aspirational. Language matters, and the tone of this argumentation is just wrong.

Hardly economically working class on £60K. Millions can only dream of a salary like that… think more like having your hand shoved down a blocked toilet or wiping bums for £11.44 an hour in a union-less job and with no employee sick pay, a poor pension scheme and on a zero hours contract… and then the taxman comes along for a big wet bite.

There are rules about MPs accepting gifts - Starmer has complied. Johnson and Sunak both BROKE the rules. If the media/people don't like the rules, perhaps the discussion should be about changing the rules. Holding one person to a higher standard - now that's hypocrisy.

Labour government have no respect for elderly pensioners who have worked for retirement! Then instead of taxing the rich they increase Council taxes to the people! While they wreaking the economy allowing pay rise for union donors, hotels and benefits for immigrants! Donations for favours in government is curruption! Labour Party must change or resign!

I’m so sick of hearing people repeating that we have bigger things to focus on. Such as climate change… If we were to be the most green, eco friendly, clean energy, carbon neutral country on the planet, the only thing we would do is reduce emissions by an arbitrary number that has a minimal impact on the planet as a whole. The cost of which will be burdened on the working population, stifle productivity, growth and reduce GDP per capita. Especially if we were to divert attention from fixing our failed economy to fixing a global issue that we do not control. This will just make us poorer, therefore (by all known measures of world data), will eventually make us a less green, more fossil fuel reliant, and less environmental friendly country. The argument that we must be a world leader and set an example with our climate policy is ridiculous when the cost of that climate policy is likely to cripple your economy to the point of not being a world leader in the first place. Nobody in developed nations has a single horse in the race in relation to the climate, because the more pressing issue is putting food on the table. You keep taking people’s food and selling it in order to buy a wind farm, you’ll just end up selling the wind farm in 50 years for a loaf of bread.
