I think he just genuinely cared about Mary and Catherine. He strikes me as being a kind person.

It's great that Mary had someone in her corner. Henry would have solved many of his issues if he had arranged for Mary when she was young to marry a suitable member of a royal household & let her have children who could inherit the throne.

True, the whole "male heirs of her body" thing. But I think Henry took it as a personal attack on his manhood that he didn't have a son of "his own body" until little Eddie came along.

@@cindchan It's understandable wanting to have a male heir, but he still should have provided for Mary for at least dynastic reasons. It's always a good idea to have a plan B.

Not to be rude and this is probably a massive tangent. But any laws set forth in the Old Testament do not apply to Christians. Christians have new laws and covenants to adhere to based on what Jesus said and did. I'll use Peter's vision of previously unclean birds and God telling him to go ahead and eat them. It was a clear sign that Christians aren't bound by Jewish laws. Basically I'm saying that Henry didn't have a leg to stand on since the commandment he was using as validation for divorcing Catherine didn't even actually apply to him in the first place because he wasn't Jewish by blood or by faith 😅

Henry's problem was even bigger. How so? 1. He asking for something outrageous. He sent Wolsey to the Pope with 2 requests: A. Annuling his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and B. Allowing his marriage to Anne Boleyn. Problem was his situation was similar: if Catherine was his "sister" because she slept with Arthur, Anne was also his "sister" because he had slept with Mary Boleyn. So, he was basically "Ewww... Catherine is my sister, so I can't stay married to her, but I have another hot sister Anne I want to marry". That's what made his request insane. 2. Bad timing. The Pope was a bit of a prisoner at the time. In 1527, Rome had been sacked by troops of the Holy Roman Emperor and that was Catherine of Aragon's relative. So, probably looking over his shoulder at the Charles' armed men watching him, the Pope wasn't really in the position to say yes to Henry. I think Wolsey did his best to help Henry, but Henry was asking for the impossible. And I think the Pope would have said yes to Henry, if he weren't the prisoner of Catherine's cousin and Henry's request wasn't so unreasonable.

This is my first time catching one of your videos on the same day you posted instead of one from like three years ago 😅 I love your content. Tudor history is one of my favorite time periods. And I love how truly in-depth you go with all your videos because you're absolutely right. It's all connected. I also love how you never seem to run out of Tudor history to talk about 🩷

Thank you, that was really informative. Wonder what poor Catherine felt. Here was someone from home, and a sister - what a surprise - and she was kept at arms length. Poor girl, she did not have an easy time in England yet became a much loved queen. Except by her husband. If only good luck had given her a son. She would have been cheated on but her position , as mother of the future king, was safe for life. ( if not happy) 🙏🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
