I was the production manager at Callaway from '87 to '91. I built many of the cars that are still out there today. I drove the Sledgehammer car many times before it went to Ohio. It was a rocket ship. Then, the sales slowed and I got laid-off. One of the best jobs I ever had. Took a callaway car home almost every night.. After it passed my inspection, I gave it to Reeve for his drive home before we let it leave the company. Nothing was compromised.

Just imagine it took Chevy till 2025 to produce a production ZR1 with 1064HP twin turbo capable of only 220mph When CALLAWAY did it in 1988 with 900HP ish and 254mph not to mention a new epoxy body aka carbon fiber basically AMAZING 🏆👍

Hey why don't Callaway take a Pontiac Soletice GXP and do a SledgeHammer build with that platform would be nice to see what Callaway could do.
@samueljackson24784 күн бұрын
You know what would be a good project if Callaway purchased the Pontiac Banshee Concept and did a Sledgehammer build with it a 4.2 GM Inline 6 , 5.7 Twin Turbo , 5.3 that would be nice to see also a 1989 Pontiac Turbo Trans Am 3.8 Twin Turbo.

They should have done that hood on all the c4s for better air flow. I have Good years on my 84 and have hit 110mph with them no issues. Love them.

One of my attainable dream cars is a C4 Corvette. One of my unattainable dream cars is a Callaway Sledgehammer. It's one of the most beautiful and effective machines ever created. Amazing.

All this does is reassure me that the simple flip zip tie mod is the way to go. Since this is just a fancy version of that but signed off by Callaway.

This is Car Enthusiasts Gold. I remember being 13 when reading about The Sledgehammer. Now for all you Millenials. Did you see the easter egg at the end? John Lingenfelter of LPE.

My dad had one of these but sold it when he found out he was having a child… I appreciate that but I never met the dude… he was Killed in action when I was an infant 🫡 Ps… he had the base model corvette not the Calloway but I have a picture of him and my mom with a crop top and bell bottoms with a huge belly with him helping her in his vette… but I am sure he would have loved the C8😢

I was fortunate enough to be a buyer when these cars were new. I have several today and keep the legend going not only with my own, but others too. I have taken it to the level people dont expect out of 80s cars with over 200hp and 400 more on torque than the cars came with, using the stock configuration, turbos and engine. I got to chat with all the guys there over the years, Mike Zoner was a big help back in the day, Reeves would talk to you too. Both he and Lingenfelter are no longer with us but the Callaway team and John did something no one else did.. darn near 260mph in a street car C4 corvette. !! In the 80s! The legend really is unmatched by comparison.

🪴I'm telling ya, I'm going to build a 1992 Z28 T Top Camaro L98 TPI B2K Callaway Twin Turbo with Sledgehammer in mind so 200 plus mph top speed.With magnesium oem Z28 Wheels.After seeing the GTD and remembering Callaways decision to use magnesium wheels I changed my mind from carbon fiber and I think using exotic metals is a cool thing to do when you can and especially that this decision can be seen.🇺🇲
@jessicaczyzewski41985 ай бұрын
That would be hard though with a Camaro I would imagine

@@jessicaczyzewski4198appreciate the comment it's what I'm going to do. Magnesium wheels are going to be expensive if affordable that is my interest.I have already found a tonnage of places where I can greatly improve the car. The intake design wider and shorter and the ram horn for the two turbos.I have so much info for this car it is going to be incredible.For a for instance the 3rd brake light I'm going to introduce a 4 blinks intermittently to identify the 3rd brake light better brighter LEDs. You see on the Ford Mustang do this with the brake lights and Audi too.But this effect is going to be safer but keep the heart racing and make everyone around the car feel as if the car is going faster than it is and an excitement of speed and even identify the Z28 Camaro in traffic as a sports car.
@jbtOO75 ай бұрын
@@jessicaczyzewski4198I almost forgot it gets even better this car is going to be able to switch from gas to hydrogen for zero emissions 700 mile range and I can make my own hydrogen too. So I am a gas monkey the smell of the gas emissions coming from the set temp turbos is going to be addictive but I can improve the car better than imagined.

I think i still have a copy of that C&D TopSpeed Shootout issue. The interesting car there that didnt get talked about here was that Ferrari 288GTO. It was built by Norwood and had an aluminum big block with turbos and a Cygnus funny car transmission. It spooked the hell out of the pro driver they had drive it. I remember it mentioned that the motor developed an issue onbthe initial lap, was doing 220+ and still acceleraring hard when they aborted the run. Brougjt it in and discovered one of the rear tires had thrown a chunk of rubber and likely would have blown at top speed. The driver declined to drive it any more. Lol
