Do you get dressed up and go out at Halloween? This year me and my wife are going to see the lost boys and scream at an outdoor screening. It's at wolloton hall near us. The place was used as Wayne manor in those Christian Bale Batman movies. That's on the 25th and 28th. On the 31st we're going to a rerelease of a nightmare on elm Street, for it's 40th anniversary. I'll be picking up a freddy costume in the next week or two.😂
@RetroGamingNook23 күн бұрын
Wow, that's a great time and at a filming location is awesome. I don't think we have dressed up for over a decade since our daughter gave it up. 20 years ago I worked at a party store when we moved to the town we are in now. Halloween was the busiest season there and we had hundreds of costumes and tons of decorations come in every year... I was the receiver and would check everything in so I would see new stuff first. It was still fun back then. Now, Halloween seems mostly dead in our area (not in the fun way) so we just celebrate at home watching and playing spooky stuff. We may get 2-3 trick or treaters a year now... sad.

It looks you had the wrong monitor type selected for GFL Football (composite vs. RGB) - the pink instead of grey is the giveaway. But I totally agree that one basically plays off of the top view on the right. It came out in 1988 on the Coco 3, although I think Greg Zumwalt wrote it in 1987. As for Rad Warrior, I have completed the game (it has a really cool swirling affect when you blow the whole screen up at the end) but I haven't done that since the early 1990's. The controls do take time to get used to... and you never really get used to it fully, lol. I always found it a bit easier to control with keyboard than joystick. The suit does recharge your player, and then there are other parts of the suit (as well as the energy pods) - anti-gravity boots so that you can fly, your gun, the particle negator (as the manual says, it protects the suit from high radiation) and the implosion mine, which when you set it off in the final room, it does the effect I mentioned earlier and you win. There is a lot of timing in the game - at around the 11:25 mark where you see the energy pod guarded by the weird plant thing firing constantly, what you have to do is exit the suit, jump down, and then duck so the shots go over your ahead. As soon as it does, stand up and move to side a little bit and then duck down again before the next shot hits you. Repeat until you get the energy pack, then turn the other direction and repeat until you get away. The map of Rad Warrior is (mostly) shaped like a pyramid; the most screens per level going left to right are on the bottom rows and start getting narrower as you progress upwards The radiation level also gets higher the higher up the "pyramid" you go, and there are some things you have to exit your suit to get (while radiation quickly poisons you) and then you rush back to the suit to heal the radiation. I do wish that they had added support for 2 button joysticks (it is a Coco 3 game, after all); it could have helped immensely rather than trying to cram everything onto a single button and joystick movement (jump vs. fire, for example). One tip - before you get a gun for the suit, you can fly (if you have the boots of course), but you can't attack from within the suit. So you have to land, exit the suit, throw rocks to kill anything you need to, and then back into the suit to fix up your damage (and to fly again). I think the game was completed within the last couple of years (and was video recorded); unfortunately I think it was on Twitch so it has since disappeared. I have a partial map on my TRS-80 Color Computer Games website of the bottom levels and about half way up in spots... it is even harder to play on an emulator than on the Coco 3 itself. But you can use it to find where some of the object pickups are without guessing.
@RetroGamingNook27 күн бұрын
Wow, thanks again, Curtis. You must have a ton of patience to get through Rad Warrior. I see the enemies spawn after you enter the screen in the C64 version making it a lot easier. But, I’m sure I’ll torture myself with this version again someday using your tips. Ya know, I have the darnedest time getting the right colors/mode on the CoCo3 with some games. I know I can use the F1 and reset, but is there a way to force the proper mode as resetting sometimes makes me reload the game and it’s the wrong colors again. Also, I knew it looked weird but I’m not sure how to force composite on the football game. I’ll mess with it some more. Cheers!
@CurtisBoyle26 күн бұрын
@@RetroGamingNook - Yeah, the composite vs. RGB is confusing - and there is two parts to it. The F1 trick (which works with RESET as you mentioned, but if you hold F1 down and turn the computer power button on, it also takes effect so you won't mangle a game that doesn't handle RESET properly) is cover artifact colors from Coco 1/2 games. This *only* works properly if a Coco 3 is plugged into RF or the composite port (or you have more modern things like a GIME-X or SCART adapter). Coco 3 composite vs. RGB is a different animal. In order to maintain backwards compatibility to the Coco 1/2 for regular colors and the new 64 color palette, composite assigns the 64 colors values by 16 basic hues and 4 "whiteness" levels. This allowed them to shift them when you hold F1 down on RESET/Powerup to change artifact colors as well the regular colors. RGB on the other hand, has 4 levels each of Reg, Green, Blue (from off to full brightness) that are built totally different than composites. So a composite vs. RGB prompt is dealing with Coco 3 only colors (and has nothing to do with artifact colors). As far as GFL and it's monitor mode... that's a good question. It definitely is defaulting to an RGB monitor color set, but I don't see anything in the manual to change that.I did a quick look in the debugger in MAME, and I can see that memory location $0027 is the flag as to whether to use composite (<>0) or RGB (=0), but haven't found where one can change that.
@RetroGamingNook26 күн бұрын
@@CurtisBoyle Some of this info is new to me. Thank you! Yes, I looked in the manual thinking I had missed something. It would be cool if there is some sort of workaround for the football game eventually. Maybe it was only programed for RGB? I see the manual says specifically on pg.3, “Turn on your computer and monitor.” Maybe “monitor” is explicit? I just tried with RF and it looks the same as composite whether I do the color shift or not. Oh well, it’s all good fun.

The Coco 2 mode on the Kefix translates the ALT and CTRL keys to act as up and down arrow keys (which is where they were placed on a Coco 1 or 2). This enables games that use the 4 arrow keys to be played with two hands, which is much easier on some games. There are some good 512K games on the Color Computer Archive - Pad-Dude 3D Monster Maze, Contras, Sinistaar, Digger III are a few off the top of my head.
